Chapter 147: Chapter 148: The Perfect Candidate - Dr. Senju
Healing...
Without a doubt, this was the most intricate and arduous treatment process Makoto had ever undertaken since joining the Gotei 13.
The hollowfication began from the anchor points stabilizing the spiritual body. To ensure Yoruichi's spiritual integrity, Makoto needed to meticulously remove the hollowfied portions that severely clashed with her original spiritual body, using Kaidō (healing techniques).
Additionally, Makoto left spaces in certain parts of her spiritual structure, allowing some hollowfied elements to integrate without overwhelming her spiritual essence. Through this, he gained insight into why hollowfication durations varied among hollowfied Shinigami in the original timeline.
It boiled down to the severity of conflict between the spiritual body and the hollowfied components. The greater the conflict, the shorter the duration of hollowfication. The idea of extending hollowfication through training made perfect sense—over time, the spiritual body, despite its initial resistance, could grow accustomed to the hollowfied elements, much like a path becoming smoother after repeated travel.
The process of removing conflicting hollowfied components from Yoruichi's spiritual body resembled excising tumors, as painstaking as carving flesh bit by bit.
Even though Makoto exercised the utmost care, the pain was still so intense that it caused the unconscious Yoruichi to let out intermittent moans—sometimes sharp, sometimes low, sometimes continuous.
Despite knowing Makoto was not the type for lowly antics, Aizen couldn't help but let a stray thought enter his mind: What exactly is Makoto doing in there?
Meanwhile, outside the room, Yūshirō Shihōin, Yoruichi's devoted younger brother, was too focused on his sister's suffering to entertain any stray thoughts. Hearing the occasional muffled sounds from within, his face twisted in distress, wishing he could bear the pain in her place.
Ōmaeda Marenoshin, however, stood frozen, utterly confused and uneasy. His wide eyes reflected a mix of shock and disbelief as he stared at the closed door, silently praying to disappear from the scene entirely.
As the ordeal dragged on, the door finally creaked open. A visibly exhausted Makoto, drenched in sweat and teetering on the brink of collapse, emerged to face Yūshirō and Marechiyo.
"Vice-captain Senju, how is my sister?" Yūshirō blurted out, his voice trembling with urgency.
Makoto managed a gentle smile. "I promised you, didn't I? Lady Yoruichi is on the mend. She should wake up soon—you can go see her now."
Joy lit up Yūshirō's eyes, and he instinctively moved towards the door but stopped himself abruptly. Instead, he turned back, bowed deeply to Makoto, and said with heartfelt gratitude, "Dr. Senju, I will never forget this kindness. If there is ever anything I can do to repay you, I will spare no effort."
Though Yoruichi was the current head of the Shihōin family, Yūshirō, as her younger brother and heir, carried significant weight with his words. His promise was no small matter.
Behind him, Marenoshin watched with envy, his face flushed with admiration.
However, Makoto simply shook his head, his expression sincere. "There's no need for that. The best reward for me as a healer is the gratitude and smiles of my patient's loved ones. Besides, Lady Yoruichi and I share a close bond—no repayment is necessary."
Hearing this, Yūshirō's respect for Makoto soared. In his mind, Makoto's standing reached unparalleled heights. If Makoto had a favorability system, notifications like these would surely appear:
> [Yūshirō Shihōin's favorability +20]
[Yūshirō Shihōin's favorability +10]
[Yūshirō Shihōin's favorability +30]
Before Yūshirō could respond further, Makoto gently took his hand and led him towards the room. "You must be anxious to see Lady Yoruichi. Come, I'll take you to her."
Marenoshin, watching Makoto lead Yūshirō inside, was left in stunned silence.
Yūshirō Shihōin… The heir to the Shihōin family, one of the four great noble houses, destined to wield immense power in the Soul Society.
While Yūshirō might still be young and sensitive, he carried an innate pride cultivated by his noble upbringing. Even Marenoshin, who had watched him grow, wouldn't dare to treat him so casually.
In Marenoshin's mind, only Yoruichi herself could interact with Yūshirō in such an unrestrained manner.
Could it be… Dr. Senju is destined to marry Lady Yoruichi and become Lord Yūshirō's brother-in-law?
Marenoshin quickly dismissed the thought but reconsidered. After all, Captain Urahara Kisuke, despite his past closeness to Yoruichi, was now an outcast sentenced by Central 46.
Now was the time Yoruichi needed comfort the most, and Dr. Senju seemed like the perfect candidate.
Marenoshin's eyes gleamed with sudden understanding as he adjusted his gilded sash, resolved to curry favor with Makoto.
The Shihōin family's friends are our friends. Their enemies are our enemies. Dr. Senju… may soon become family.
Determined, he hurried after Makoto, ready to pledge his allegiance.
