Chapter 4: Chapter Three: HSDxD History
The trio ate in a peaceful silence finally broken by them finishing their meal. After Shinjiro's story of his past, nobody said anything, and Shinjiro didn't break the silence by asking questions, remaining patient.
"Alright, I must go, but a deal is a deal. Penemue here is a very smart individual. Any questions you have, she should be able to answer, and if not, she can help you find sources that will. I must leave to attend to other matters, and she will help create a persona for you to make you an official resident of this world. A freelancer would fit you best," said Azazel, creating a card with his name on it that bore Azazel's official sigil as well as basic information for Shinjiro and his affiliation with the Grigori as a hired freelancer.
Penemue with a faint smirk playing on her lips. "He just wants to play around, as always. But don't let it bother you. That thick head of his hides a surprising amount of insight—when he bothers to use it," she remarked dryly.
"She will also lead you to your new quarters here that you can stay in and leave whenever you please. Take it as a kind gesture from one leader to another. See you around." With that, Azazel left, his grin as unshaken as ever despite Penemue's earlier jab about his thick head. If he even noticed, he gave no sign, strolling away with the same carefree confidence that defined him.
"So, what do you wish to know about this world's current affairs?" asked Penemue.
"The powers at play and basics of the supernatural side of this world," replied Shinjiro.
Penemue nodded thoughtfully and leaned back in her chair, her elegant posture giving her the air of a seasoned diplomat. "This world's supernatural side is divided into several factions, each with their own histories, rivalries, and politics. While the Angels, the Devils, and the Fallen Angels, are among the prominent groups, they are far from the only powers at play. Other major forces include the Norse, Greek, and Shinto pantheons, along with independent entities like dragons and rogue supernatural beings. These groups have their own agendas, often interwoven with the delicate balance of power maintained since the Great War."
She paused, observing Shinjiro's reaction before continuing. "The Angels, under Heaven's guidance, are governed by the Seraphs. Their leader, Michael, oversees the operations of Heaven's forces since God's… passing."
Shinjiro raised a brow. "Passing?"
"Yes," Penemue replied solemnly. "God perished during the Great War. His death destabilized the balance of power and left Heaven's forces struggling to maintain their influence and purpose. Despite this, they remain a formidable force, united by faith and their mission to protect humanity."
"And the Devils?" Shinjiro prompted.
"The Devils are ruled by the Four Great Satans," Penemue explained. "They are powerful beings who rose to leadership following the deaths of the original Satans. The Underworld is their domain, and they operate with a more hierarchical structure compared to the other factions. Each Devil family has its own political and territorial interests, which often complicates their unity."
She leaned forward slightly, her tone sharpening. "Then there are the Fallen Angels, our group. Once Angels, we were cast out of Heaven for defying its laws. The Grigori was formed as a haven for us. Unlike Heaven or the Underworld, we prioritize research, innovation, and adaptation. Azazel himself is a visionary, always seeking ways to understand and influence the world through technology and alliances."
Shinjiro absorbed the information, his sharp mind already piecing together the dynamics. "And outside these three?"
"There are other factions and beings of interest," Penemue continued. "The Norse, Greek, and Shinto pantheons all maintain a presence, each with their own gods and territories. Then there are the dragons, immensely powerful entities who often operate independently. There are also rogue factions, stray Devils, and unaffiliated supernatural beings who act outside the established order."
Shinjiro's gaze narrowed. "It sounds like this world is a fragile balance of alliances and rivalries."
Penemue smiled faintly. "That's a fair assessment. This balance has held, albeit shakily. But tension always simmers beneath the surface. A single spark could reignite old conflicts."
Shinjiro leaned back, considering her words. "And humanity? Where do they stand in all this?"
"Humans are largely unaware of the supernatural," Penemue replied. "The major factions work to keep it that way, though certain groups, like exorcists or magicians, are exceptions. Despite their lack of awareness, humanity often finds itself caught in the crossfire of supernatural conflicts."
She stood, smoothing her dress. "Come. I'll show you to your quarters and explain the specifics of your new role as we go. Even though you are a freelancer only by name or truly by choice, your actions will still reflect on the Grigori as a partner. It's important to maintain a certain level of diplomacy."
Shinjiro rose as well, towering over her but following her lead without hesitation. "Lead the way," he said simply.
As they walked through the winding corridors of the Grigori headquarters, Penemue continued to brief him on the protocols, key figures, and resources available to him. Shinjiro listened intently, his sharp mind absorbing every detail. Though this world was foreign to him, the principles of leadership, power, and strategy were universal. He would adapt, as he always had.
Reaching his quarters, Penemue gestured for him to enter. The room was spacious, with a mix of modern and classical decor. A large window offered a view of the Grigori compound, its dark spires illuminated by ethereal light.
"This will be your space," Penemue said. "Feel free to make it your own. If you need anything, you can contact me directly."
Shinjiro stepped inside, his eyes scanning the room. It was far more luxurious than what he was accustomed to, but he remained stoic. "Thank you," he said, turning back to her. "For your guidance and patience."
Penemue offered a small smile. "You're an interesting individual, Shinjiro Caldarius. I'm certain your presence here will bring about interesting times."
With that, she left him to settle in, the door closing softly behind her. Shinjiro stood in the quiet room, his mind already racing with thoughts of how he would navigate this strange new world. One thing was certain—he would not remain a passive observer. This world's powers and mysteries would soon know the name Shinjiro Caldarius.
