Chapter 76: Chapter 76: I'll Take Care Of Rossweise, I Promise!
Before taking off his clothes, he crouched at the door, scratched his head, and said, "You're not going to peek, are you?"
"Who would peek at you, you idiot!"
Rossweise immediately used a cushion to cover her eyes.
A few seconds later, the sound of running water came from the bathroom.
Rossweise didn't dare relax the whole time, always keeping the cushion over her line of sight.
"Silver Dragon Queen says what she means!—"
'Wait, no!'
'He's my captive. What right does he have to make demands of me? Haven't I seen every part of his body already?'
'The decision is mine. If I want to look, I'll look!'
'Uh… Never mind.'
'There's nothing much to see. I'm already bored of it!'
'It's definitely not because I'm scared!'
A little white Rossweise and a little black Rossweise bickered endlessly on her shoulders. Finally, Rossweise buried her head under the blanket.
A few minutes later, the water stopped. Shortly after, the waterbed trembled, and a pleasant scent of shower gel wafted under the blanket.
'It must be that guy climbing onto the bed.'
Rossweise peeked her head out from under the blanket.
She glanced sideways at Leon. Fortunately, the waterbed was big enough to leave a significant distance between them.
This might be the one thing Isha miscalculated.
She thought providing a super-large waterbed would give the two of them plenty of room to mess around.
But all it did was help them draw a clear boundary, making sure neither of them could touch the other.
As the night deepened, the entire Red Dragon Sanctuary fell silent.
The foolish couple rarely lay on the same bed in such an absolutely sober state.
Though it was already late at night, their eyes remained wide open, staring straight at the ceiling.
Judging by their breathing, they both knew the other wasn't asleep.
Yet, two hours had passed since they lay down.
Leon had a hunch that if this continued, they wouldn't fall asleep even after another two hours.
So, he tried to strike up a conversation to ease the awkward atmosphere. "Hey."
"What."
"Where's your tail?"
"Why do you ask?"
"Just curious. I didn't see it when you lay down."
"I retracted it," Rossweise said. "Dragons automatically retract their tails when they lie down or fall asleep."
Leon nodded thoughtfully and, after a pause, asked, "What if you forget? Wouldn't it get crushed?"
Rossweise rolled her eyes. "Do you forget to breathe when you sleep?"
"Oh, I see…"
"Yeah."
The science lesson ended.
The two fell silent again.
The room was extremely quiet, so much so that only their breathing and heartbeat could be heard.
Rossweise pulled the blanket over her body, while Leon didn't dare fully tuck himself in. He left most of his side exposed.
The blanket was too warm, largely thanks to Rossweise's body heat.
Moreover, in such a confined and intimate space, even a small movement could cause their arms—or other parts—to touch.
Would Leon dare move? Absolutely not!
Beside him, Rossweise tried turning onto her side to sleep.
But as soon as she moved, the waterbed began to ripple and emit faintly suggestive water sounds.
Helpless, she gave up the idea of turning over and lay flat instead.
Listening to each other's heartbeat and breathing, another half hour passed.
Suddenly, Leon threw off the blanket and jumped out of bed.
Hearing the commotion, Rossweise sat up. "Where are you going?"
"I can't sleep. I'm going out for a walk."
Leon got dressed and left the room.
Passing by the sisters' room, he pressed his ear against the door. Hearing no noise, he guessed the two were already asleep.
Leon sighed, shoved his hands into his pockets, and headed upstairs.
He wanted to cool off on the rooftop.
When he reached the rooftop of the sanctuary, he found that he wasn't the only one who couldn't sleep tonight.
A red silhouette leaned against the railing, gazing into the distant mountains. A bottle of red wine sat on a small table beside her.
Leon walked over and stood next to Isha. "Still up so late, sis?"
Isha glanced at Leon, then continued staring into the distant forest. "Yeah, because I figured at least one of you wouldn't be able to sleep either."
"Who could sleep in that room, honestly?" Leon quipped.
Isha chuckled, covering her mouth. "What, don't like it? I prepared it especially for you two."
Leon said nothing but smiled faintly.
Looking at the table, he noticed two wine glasses.
So, she had even anticipated a rooftop chat.
"Want a drink?" Isha offered.
"Sure."
Isha picked up the glasses, handed one to Leon, and filled them both.
They clinked glasses and each took a sip of the rich wine.
"I thought the one coming to the rooftop would be little Rose," Isha said. "I even chose her favorite wine."
Leon laughed. "Want me to go get her? She's still awake too."
Isha rolled her eyes at him playfully. "No need. Here, help me with something."
"Alright."
They moved to the side, and Isha nudged a cardboard box with her foot.
Leon recognized it—it was full of Rossweise's discarded love letters.
Isha brought over some firewood, stacked it up, and raised her hand to unleash a flame, igniting the wood.
She crouched down, pulled out a letter from the box, and tossed it into the fire.
"A little over a year ago, Rose suddenly started writing to me a lot," Isha said unexpectedly.
Leon crouched down too, slowly tossing letters into the fire.
"She told me she married a low-key Dragon King in secret and was pregnant with his child."
"I congratulated her in my letters, but she didn't seem very happy. Her words felt melancholic. I know my sister better than anyone."
Leon watched the fire silently, the flames reflecting in his dark eyes.
He thought back to when he used Blood Enchantment to make Rossweise pregnant, after which he fell unconscious.
Spending her pregnancy alone, carrying her enemy's child… Those days must have felt endless.
"She always wrote in her letters, saying that your health wasn't very good, and you always needed to sleep for a very, very long time. During her pregnancy, only the maids took care of her, including the two days when Luna and Noah were born."
Isha said calmly, "You must know, right? Twins are much harder to carry during pregnancy and give birth to than a single child."
Leon let out a soft hum.
Isha's words reminded Leon, and he roughly understood why Rossweise often seemed melancholic and sorrowful.
Aside from managing the many affairs within the clan and the physical and mental exhaustion it brought,
she also had a "sudden" family to take care of.
There was no doubt she loved her children deeply, but behind that love was two years of long-lasting loneliness and solitude.
No companionship, no one to confide in, only the letters to her only sister as a way to release her inner bitterness and melancholy.
"At that time, I thought she had married someone she didn't like," Isha said.
"Someone dumber than her, irresponsible, who didn't like children—a greasy, bad-tempered male dragon."
She spoke while glancing toward Leon.
Leon scratched his head. "Sister, do I look like that kind of dragon?"
'Sister, I'm not even a dragon. Isn't that amazing?'
"Of course, you're not. And through tonight's short interactions, I'm even more convinced that Rossweise married the right person. She really likes you."
Isha was undoubtedly a very perceptive person; Leon admitted this.
But the words "she really likes you" were something Leon dared not agree with.
He scratched his cheek, mumbling, "Sister, what makes you say that..."
"She interacts with you differently than with anyone else. When you're together, it's so relaxed, so comfortable. While being husband and wife, you've also maintained a layer of friendship."
'But could it be that we're just mortal enemies…'
"Rossweise is particularly bad at expressing her feelings. I've truly never seen anyone else who could make her let down her guard and engage like this. You're the second one, Leon."
Leon froze. "Then who's the first?"
"Duh, me." Isha proudly pointed at herself.
"…Alright."
Isha burned the last love letter in her hand and said:
"In any case, I'm telling you all this not to pressure you, but because I want you to take care of my sister. She's just endured the loneliest two years, and there are many more two-year periods in her life to come. You have to walk through them with her."
Isha raised her gaze toward Leon. "You're a responsible man. You know what to do to reassure me, right?"
Leon's pupils trembled slightly, and the firelight in his eyes flickered gently.
'Walk through them with her…'
'Spend a lifetime.'
'But we…'
Leon still held the last love letter in his hand, unconsciously gripping one corner of the envelope.
Seeing Leon silent, Isha frowned slightly. "What, you won't—"
"I will, Sister."
Leon folded the last love letter and slowly tossed it into the fire.
The letter paper burned, and the ashes floated away.
"I'll take care of Rossweise. I promise."
Isha's frown eased. "Hmph, kid, you'd better mean it."
