Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Beg, Dragon Slayer. Beg!
Chapter 8: Beg! Dragon Slayer, Beg!
Rossweise's tone had a hint of smugness, as if she were enjoying Leon's predicament.
It suddenly clicked in Leon's mind why Rossweise insisted they walk back to the Silver Dragon Palace.
'She wants me to beg?'
At this point, all the cards were in her hands.
The distance between them and the Palace was far too great for him to walk back, no question about it.
Rossweise, on the other hand, could simply transform into her dragon form and fly back whenever she wished.
Even though Leon was close to the Empire, there was no way he could escape her sight. If he even tried to run a few meters, she would catch him in an instant.
So, after stripping away his dignity, Rossweise now intended to wear down his body as well.
Realizing this, Leon gripped the dry bark of the tree beside him, clenching his teeth. "I told you, I'm not tired. Let's keep walking."
"Hmph, the only thing strong about you is your mouth."
Leon walked past her, not sparing her a glance, his gaze fixed ahead. "My mouth isn't the only thing that's hard. My bones are as well. You want to see me beg? That's never going to happen."
He continued forward.
Rossweise let out a cold snort and followed behind.
It was laughable, really. A fully charged dragon queen against a human who was barely standing—there was no contest. She was simply curious to see how long the so-called "greatest Dragon Slayer" could keep up the act.
After about ten more minutes of walking, the faint sounds of voices reached them from ahead.
Looking toward the source, Leon saw flickers of firelight. Someone seemed to be camping in the forest, using a bonfire to ward off the wildlife.
In Leon's dark eyes, that firelight became a symbol of hope.
He parted his lips, wanting to call out for help. This might be his only chance to send a message about his situation.
But just as the words reached his tongue, Leon swallowed them back down.
He glanced sideways at Rossweise.
If he cried out for help now, she wouldn't hesitate to kill those people.
That would mean Leon would be responsible for their deaths.
Realizing this, Leon sighed deeply and turned his back to the camp, walking away without saying a word.
But before he had taken more than a few steps, a friendly voice called out from the direction of the campfire.
"Hey! Are you lost?"
Footsteps crunched on the forest floor as a group approached.
Rossweise tensed immediately, magic energy swirling around her hand.
Seeing this, Leon quickly stepped forward, grabbing her wrist.
The heat from the magic scorched his hand, but Leon didn't let go.
He stood in front of Rossweise, blocking her tail from moving.
The campers drew closer, stopping a short distance away.
"Are you lost?" asked a young man.
"Oh, no, no. We're just... uh... out for a walk."
"This forest isn't the best place for a casual stroll, sir. There are dangerous creatures around. Why don't you spend the night at our camp? Tomorrow, we can escort you both down the mountain."
The young man hesitated, perhaps sensing Leon's unease. He quickly added, "Oh, by the way, I'm Walker, captain of the Empire's 47th Dragon Slayer Squad."
The moonlight filtered through the dense trees, casting shadows over their faces. Because of the darkness and distance, Walker couldn't see Leon clearly.
Otherwise, there was no way a Dragon Slayer like Walker wouldn't recognize him.
An opportunity was right in front of him. If Leon called out for help now, this well-trained squad would immediately sense something was wrong.
But the cost would be high. Rossweise could kill them all, and even if someone managed to escape back to the capital to report Leon's situation, the casualties would be too great.
Leon would never let that happen.
He pressed his lips together, then suddenly wrapped his arm around Rossweise's waist.
This action startled the dragon queen so much that the magic in her hand dissipated.
"Thank you for the offer, Dragon Slayer. But my wife and I are trained. We can protect ourselves. We're just enjoying a walk and will head down the mountain soon."
Walker seemed to relax at Leon's words and didn't insist. "Alright. Oh, here, take this."
He stepped forward, handing Leon a flare. "If you run into any real danger, fire this into the sky, and we'll be there immediately."
Leon took the flare with a nod of gratitude. "Thank you."
"No problem—wait a minute. Sir, you look familiar. Have we met before?" Now that he was closer, Walker could make out more of Leon's features.
Leon hesitated for a split second before smiling. "You must be mistaken. I've got one of those faces. It's the same face my wife fell for when she first chased me."
Rossweise: ⊙.☉
Walker chuckled. "Alright then, take care."
With that, he and his men turned and left.
As soon as they were out of sight, Leon let out a deep breath.
Rossweise immediately pushed him away with her tail, sneering. "I didn't know you could lie so smoothly. 'I chased you?' Don't be ridiculous."
"You think I wasn't disgusted saying it?"
"If you were disgusted, why did you drag me down with you?"
"Of course. We're married, after all."
Rossweise rolled her eyes. "Get one thing straight. Just because we have a child doesn't make me your wife, understand?"
"I never asked to be your husband."
Leon pocketed the flare and looked down at his burned hand, which still throbbed with pain.
Rossweise raised an eyebrow, noticing both his injury and the way he was examining his hand.
However, instead of showing concern, she asked a different question. "You grabbed my waist earlier because you were worried I'd kill them, weren't you?"
Leon glared at her, saying nothing, which was all the answer she needed.
"You're clever, Leon. You didn't call for help, and you didn't act impulsively. Besides your sharp tongue, I haven't found any other flaws in you yet."
"Being sharp-tongued isn't a flaw."
Leon started walking again, ignoring her.
Rossweise smiled faintly and followed.
They continued on their way without encountering any more Dragon Slayer teams.
But eventually, Leon's body gave out.
His vision blurred, and he collapsed to the ground.
Rossweise turned and walked back to him, crouching down beside him. She lifted his chin gently with her finger, studying his pale, exhausted face with an amused smile.
"Looks like you've finally reached your limit, Leon. Beg me! Beg! and I'll take you back to rest."
"I... I don't understand what you're talking about..." Leon muttered, barely conscious.
Rossweise chuckled. "Don't you want to lie in a soft bed, eat a delicious meal prepared by maids, and take a warm bath before bed? Just ask me, and in three hours, we'll be home."
Leon slowly closed his eyes, using the last of his strength to whisper, "If you're so strong... then just leave me here... to feed the wolves."
With that, he lost consciousness.
The next moment, a powerful gust of wind swept through the trees, causing the leaves to swirl, and the ground trembled slightly.
The silver dragon picked Leon up in her jaws and tossed him onto her back.
With a flap of her wings, she soared into the night sky.
———
Leon slowly opened his eyes.
The first thing he saw was—
A pair of eyes staring back at him.
Soft, blue eyes, glistening like crystal, with long lashes that fluttered lightly. They were adorable.
"Daddy, you're awake~"
Little Luna was sitting at Leon's bedside in a classic "duck-sit" posture, eagerly waiting for him to wake up.
When she saw his eyes open, her tiny face lit up with joy, unable to contain her excitement.
The tuft of hair on top of her head and the small tail behind her wiggled happily in response.
Leon, still groggy, attempted to sit up.
Seeing this, Luna quickly moved to help him, holding his arm and guiding him to lean against the headboard.
Just as he was about to thank her, Leon winced as a sharp pain shot through his hand.
Looking down, he saw that his right hand was wrapped in bandages.
It was the same hand he had burned last night when stopping Rossweise from attacking the Dragon Slayers.
And now, it was already bandaged...
"I did that! I bandaged your hand, Daddy!"
Seeing Leon staring at the bandage, Luna proudly puffed out her chest, her tail arching even higher in delight.
Leon gave her a tired smile, patting her head gently. "You did great, Luna."
The moment he touched her head, Luna became even more excited. Like a little kitten, she nuzzled into Leon's large hand.
She closed her eyes, smiling contentedly, clearly enjoying the feeling.
To her, Leon was her father. She had no ill will toward him, only pure affection.
Despite her obvious dragon features, Leon found it impossible to harbor any hostility toward her—certainly not the kind of enmity that would pit them as enemies.
After all, she was an adorably innocent little dragon girl.
If beauty and cuteness were the criteria, dragon children had a clear advantage over humans.
They matured faster and developed intelligence earlier, with physical and appearance changes happening far sooner compared to human children.
As Leon thought about this, one question popped into his mind:
'How on earth did someone like Rossweise—this bitter, cold-hearted dragon queen who always wore a sour expression—give birth to such an adorable and gentle daughter?'
Although dragonlings were physically more developed than human children, their personalities often mirrored the dragon race—violent and dominant.
Leon had read numerous papers by dragonologists, and they all agreed: a dragon's entire life was steeped in violence and bloodshed, including their youth.
But looking at Luna now, she couldn't have been further from that description. She was nothing like the typical fierce dragonlings described in those papers.
'Could it be... because she is half-human?'
As Leon pondered this, the door to the room creaked open.
