Chapter 24: The Black Wizard's Day of Torment
It wasn't just physical pleasure but also a spiritual joy.
Especially before entering the Soul Palace, Chu Yang had been an ordinary person. Now, the contrast made him appreciate this indescribable thrill even more.
It was like playing a game where you're fighting a high-reward monster, but your damage is pitiful. Then, you activate a cheat, and one hit deals 999 damage, instantly killing it. That feeling is simply exhilarating.
That's exactly how Chu Yang felt now. He didn't want to stop, so he pulled out book after book from his backpack and continued reading until dinnertime. Only when his stomach started growling did he reluctantly put down the book.
In that short period, Chu Yang had already finished reading A History of Magic, One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, all introductory books.
Stretching lazily, a tingling sensation spread throughout his body. Chu Yang murmured, "If I could have read like this in my previous life, I probably could've gotten into a world-renowned university in a year or two."
After hastily eating dinner, Chu Yang quickly prepared to return to his room.
"Hey, slow down, slow down, future student wizard. What's the rush?" Old Tom looked up and reminded Chu Yang, who was walking up the stairs.
"Sorry, Mr. Tom, I'm in a hurry to get back and continue reading!" Chu Yang responded and then lightened his steps, hurrying back to his room.
"Such a diligent learner…" Tom was a bit taken aback. In his experience, young wizards coming to Diagon Alley for the first time usually got lost in the excitement of the magical world outside. It was rare for someone to quietly settle down with books in his inn.
Back in his room, Chu Yang first let out his owl to feed it, then eagerly picked up Theories of Magic to read.
Compared to the introductory books, Theories of Magic had a much higher reading threshold, requiring more time for Chu Yang to comprehend and memorize.
By nightfall, feeling slightly mentally exhausted, Chu Yang finally put the book down and fell into a deep sleep.
The next day, just like the previous one, Chu Yang stayed in his room, reading Theories of Magic and Defensive Magical Theory. He went through these two books over and over again, reading them at least a dozen times.
By evening, wearing a hoodie with his wizard robe on top, Chu Yang left the Leaky Cauldron.
Tonight, he was going to Knockturn Alley to hunt.
...
Knockturn Alley was connected to Diagon Alley by a hidden passageway, one that few would traverse because too many ill-intentioned individuals watched that road.
In wizarding families, parents would warn their children at a young age not to go to Knockturn Alley, as it was a gathering place for dark wizards.
If there was an urgent matter, adult wizards would typically use Floo Powder for quick travel to and from Knockturn Alley. Those with more skill would opt for Apparition.
If Chu Yang were just running errands, he would also choose Floo Powder. But today, he came to hunt.
The more greedy eyes set on him, the better!
Defense Against the Dark Arts had made Chu Yang well aware of the spells and starting gestures dark wizards used to cast dark magic, known as their "pre-casting movements."
His heightened sense of observation could help Chu Yang predict their actions and dodge in advance.
With Chu Yang's current physical condition, even without using the Body Flicker Technique from the world of Naruto, most dark wizards would find it hard to land a hit on him.
This was the confidence Chu Yang had in hunting dark wizards.
An 11-year-old boy swaggered down the street that led to Knockturn Alley, unsurprisingly drawing a lot of attention.
Chu Yang deliberately let his money pouch fall to the ground, several Galleons rolling out with a clinking sound.
Several pale, gaunt dark wizards practically bulged their eyes out at the sight.
Chu Yang quickly gathered up the Galleons.
Facing the greedy gazes around him, he pretended to panic and rushed into a dark alley.
Immediately, a dark wizard followed Chu Yang, trailing him into the pitch-black alley while letting out sinister laughter.
Chu Yang let out a terrified scream and ran even faster!
"Little wizard, didn't your parents warn you about where not to go in Diagon Alley?" A bald dark wizard with sunken eyes and a vicious expression laughed as he chased after Chu Yang.
At the entrance of the alley, a group of dark wizards stood guard. Hearing the bald wizard's rampant laughter, they also grinned.
However, not long after, the alley suddenly fell silent. A long time passed without a sound, as if no one had ever gone in.
The dark wizards exchanged bewildered glances.
It shouldn't take this long to deal with a kid.
"Who's going in to take a look?"
"York, why don't you go check? Or are you afraid of the dark?"
"Hahaha."
Under the mocking laughter of the other dark wizards, the sickly-looking York flushed with anger. "Fine, I'll go. Everyone shut up!"
With that, he shakily steadied himself against the wall and ventured into the alley.
The laughter behind him paused briefly before erupting once more.
"Hahaha, York, you walk like a girl!"
York cast a Lumos Charm to dispel the surrounding darkness and strode forward. But as he walked, his foot seemed to catch on something, causing him to stumble and fall.
It was surprisingly soft under him, almost like a cushion. He looked down and saw the bald dark wizard who had been chasing Chu Yang earlier.
York's pupils contracted!
Looking around, he saw that the ground was littered with bodies.
None of them were dead, but all had been stripped down to nothing but their wizard robes.
Terrified, York fell back onto the ground and started screaming. The dark wizards outside rushed into the narrow, dark alley, only to be equally shocked by what they saw.
By this time, Chu Yang had long since left Knockturn Alley and returned to the Leaky Cauldron.
He poured all his loot onto the bed, the sound of coins clinking together like a brilliant orchestral performance.
Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts—coins of all three values were present.
In this one trip, Chu Yang had made nearly a thousand Galleons.
"Times are tough for dark wizards. Their wealthiest days were probably during Voldemort's reign, but those times are long gone," Chu Yang remarked with a hint of regret, though he couldn't suppress the smile creeping up his face.
Throughout the entire process, he hadn't used a single spell, ensuring no one would take notice.
With a steady income, Chu Yang no longer worried about spending money. He first went to Flourish and Blotts to purchase some higher-level textbooks, then returned to his room to read.
For the next month, Chu Yang's life became highly regular. He spent his days reading and his nights venturing out, disguising himself and "working."
He was like a Batman active in Knockturn Alley's dark nights.
The carefree days flew by, and soon it was September 1st. Chu Yang packed his belongings, left the Leaky Cauldron, and headed to King's Cross Station.
The barrier to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters was enchanted, preventing Muggles from noticing it, and they would instinctively avoid it—just like the Leaky Cauldron.
