Chapter 13: Of Magick And Men
Forenus led Nasiah out of the building, leaving Myrym and Forcas to rest up. It took a while, but he managed to get the mother out of the equation.
He knew that teaching Nasiah would help in taking over the throne. Especially if it's about Magick. He was not an experienced teacher, but he could at least explain and help him find a mentor.
Nasiah just followed along, he always wanted to learn Magick ever since he saw Forenus use it on the shore. "Will you teach me Magick now?"
Forenus shook his head. "No, that I still do not think I am capable of doing. Magick needs to be passed down with special methods I have not properly acquired."
It was something that needed to be engraved into one's very own essence. It was not so simple as saying chants and acting. It was the act of grabbing at the laws of the world and bending them to your will.
There was no way to teach that. One needs a sage or, better yet, an Aetree Speaker to help with managing Magick.
"But, we will be finding those that could help you in that regard." He gave Nasiah a nod, beckoning him to follow as they dashed away from the base.
The boy followed suit, pursuing the Great Marquis throughout the desert.
----------
Forenus and Nasiah roamed for a few minutes until the former stopped right in front of a valley.
He raised his hand, signaling to Nasiah that they were there. "We walk now to not alert them."
The boy stopped in his tracks. He looked around the desert landscape; it was just sand for what seemed to be hundreds of miles, with a few patches of Savanna here and there, along with the occasional canyon.
However, this place was different. He could see the air sparkle as if there were glitter. "Ooh, I can feel it! I feel so light here!"
He jumped up into the air several more feet than he should have before descending much slower than usual.
The Marquis led him downwards towards the lowest level of the valley. "It's a special place due to those that live here: Sages, incredibly powerful Magi's that study the nature of the world.
Nasiah gave a gasp of awe as he looked around the valley, his eyes finding the most interesting site being the giant tree around half the height of the valley walls.
There were golden threads that emanated from its leaves. They gently spun and flew around, fading from view every so often before reappearing.
"Wow, that's so pretty?" The boy walked towards the tree.
Forenus raised his eyebrows. "What is?"
"The golden threads, of course." Nasiah pointed to the tree and yet Forenus could not see them. However, he could feel their presence and noticed a slight shimmer in the air every few moments.
A smile grew on his face. "Interesting."
If he could feel Magick this finely then this process should be quite simple.
Both men continued to walk until they reached the bottom of the canyon, where the base of the tree lies.
There, they found a young man with dark skin covered in contrasting cream-colored robes. He was meditating all alone with his eyes open as if he were watching them.
However, he was blind, a fact obvious to both Nasiah and Forenus as they drew closer to the man, finding his pupils were pale.
"Greetings, may the Aetree provide us with its shade on its fine day. You have come to be taught, correct?"
Nasiah's eyes lit up as he ran to the blind man. "What? How did you know?"
The man stood up. He grabbed a staff and pointed to the tree behind his body. "Some time ago, when all the stars in the sky were lit up. I received a prophetic dream, one foretelling of a child with immense power coming here to be trained by me."
He turned to bow his head towards Nasiah and Forenus. "I am Musa, one of the many nomadic sages of this land. It seems I am to be blessed to be your teacher."
Forenus looked around the valley. "I am Marquis Forenus. May the Aetree provide us shade on this day… where have the other sages gone?"
Musa leaned against the tree. "After all the stars in the sky lit up, each of us was given a dream, and many have set off to fulfill them, as I am doing with my own."
He reached out his hand to Nasiah. "Come, take my hand, and I shall awaken your connection to Magick."
The boy's eyes sparkled as he took the man's hand and gave him a nod.
Musa gave Nasiah a warm smile before placing both of their hands on the tree trunk. In an instant, a golden pulse was emitted, sending forth a wave of light all around the valley.
In truth, it was no ordinary tree. It was one specially cultivated and made to represent the Aetree, which was believed to be the collection of all the Names of the rules and laws in the world.
Sages would study and meditate under them to gather knowledge and a deeper understanding of the abstract nature of reality.
They gleaned great power and information from their acts. However, to someone like Nasiah, this would be much more special.
His eyes sparkled as he began to see the threads from before clearly. Each one stretched across the air, many overlapping and connecting to each other.
Each thread had a title that endlessly repeated on its side, such as 'gravity', 'momentum' and so on.
He reached out to one on the floor that had the label of 'friction' and tugged onto it. Instantly he felt the ground become a lot more slippery.
"Oh, what's all of this?" Nasiah tilted his head as he let go of the string.
Musa patted the boy's head. "You are seeing the reflections of the Names of the world. The laws that govern the physical nature of creation."
He himself could not see it, but his dream told him of this child and what they would be able to do. The ability to see and interact with these threads on command.
Normally, one would need to use special incantations, hand movements, and rituals to use and manipulate these threads. But this child, he would be able to use them to his every whim and desire.
However, he would need to be taught and managed on how to control his awakened abilities, and that's what Musa was here for, to help train him in that endeavor.
"Come, I shall teach you more of Magick and of yourself."
