Chapter 36: (36) Nimbus 2000

Haah~ What a great day~

Merry Christmas, everyone!

______

Time passed quickly as Ian and Draco continued their training, and before they knew it, it was dinnertime.

The two of them rode their broomsticks back to the castle and headed straight to the Great Hall.

By then, the hall was already filled with students. Ian and Draco found a spot at the Slytherin table and began eating their dinner.

Halfway through the meal, a flurry of owls swooped in through the windows, circling the hall and dropping packages onto the tables below.

"Today's the owl post day," murmured Cassandra, who was seated beside Ian. "I bet my mother will send me some cookies and sweets again."

Ian nodded slightly and turned his gaze to the windows.

There, he spotted a familiar owl carrying a long, rectangular package toward the Gryffindor table.

It was Harry's Hedwig.

Watching Hedwig deliver the package to Harry, Ian couldn't help but feel a spark of envy.

A Nimbus 2000. Sure, I could buy one myself, but who doesn't love getting a free gift like that?

So unfair. I should have been sorted into Gryffindor. Ian silently cursed the Sorting Hat. If I were a Gryffindor, Professor McGonagall would definitely have sent me one too.

Meanwhile, Harry had just taken the package from Hedwig's beak.

He stared at the long, wrapped parcel in surprise. A package? For him?

Curious, Harry carefully unwrapped the parcel. The moment he saw what was inside, his eyes widened in astonishment.

Inside the package lay a sleek, streamlined broomstick!

Harry stared at the broomstick in his hands, feeling a surge of excitement. It was the most beautiful broomstick he had ever seen.

"Wow! It's a Nimbus 2000! That's no ordinary broomstick!" Ron exclaimed, his voice full of envy. "Harry, who sent this to you?"

"I don't know. I've never received a package before," Harry said, shaking his head. His eyes sparkled with delight.

Instinctively, he glanced toward the staff table and saw Professor McGonagall smiling and nodding at him.

'Professor McGonagall!' Harry instantly understood—it was she who had sent him the broomstick!

"Harry, you're so lucky!" Ron said, staring enviously at the Nimbus 2000 in Harry's hands. "With this broomstick, you'll definitely become Gryffindor's greatest Seeker!"

Harry's joy lasted only a moment before his expression shifted into a frown. "Ron, where can I buy this broomstick?"

Ron scratched his head. "What's the matter, Harry? The Nimbus 2000 is sold at the Quality Quidditch Supplies shop in Diagon Alley. Why are you asking all of a sudden?"

"I'm going to buy one for Ian too," Harry said without hesitation. "My brother should have a broomstick like this as well."

Ron's envy deepened. "You two have such a great relationship."

Harry smiled but didn't say anything further. He had already made up his mind to ask Professor McGonagall later if she could help him purchase another broomstick for Ian.

Hermione, standing nearby, nodded thoughtfully.

She silently vowed to save up enough money to buy Ian a broomstick too. She couldn't let Harry outdo her as Ian's sibling!

After all, in the future, she and Ian would be the closest family!

A bond that even Harry, as his twin brother, couldn't compare to!

At the Slytherin table, Draco patted Ian on the shoulder, teasing, "Look, Harry just got himself a Nimbus 2000. Jealous?"

Ian glanced toward the lively Gryffindor table—Harry was holding a brand-new broomstick in his hands.

"Not at all," Ian said, shaking his head as he withdrew his gaze. "The Potters are pretty well-off. I could easily buy an even better one if I wanted, and so could Harry."

Draco choked on Ian's calm response before huffing, "Well, aren't you the rich, twins who lived!"

Ian laughed, ignoring Draco's snarky remark.

Just then, Ian's golden eagle, Themis, flew in from outside, carrying three packages and heading straight for the Slytherin table.

"Hey, isn't that Themis?" Cassandra said, resting her chin on her hand. Suppressing a sense of pride, she glanced at Ian. "Looks like someone sent you some packages, Ian."

"Probably Aunt Granger," Ian replied with a faint smile. He untied the packages from Themis's feet and rewarded her with some treats. "Good girl."

Themis: Hmph!

Ian opened his three packages, revealing three Nimbus 2000 broomsticks inside!

As the three gleaming, gold-dusted broomsticks were unveiled, the surrounding Slytherins erupted into exclamations.

"Three Nimbus 2000s!"

"How much do those cost?"

"Potter's popularity is something else—three people sent him broomsticks!"

"Three!?" Ian stared at the three Nimbus 2000s in front of him, momentarily stunned.

Cassandra immediately raised her chin proudly, pointing to the broomstick in the middle, adorned with the Vole family crest. "That one's from me, Potter! Look, the Vole family crest, and your name is engraved on the side!"

"And this one is from me," Draco said, pointing to the broomstick on the left, marked with the Malfoy family crest. His expression suddenly turned a bit sour. "My broomstick was supposed to arrive today too, but my mother wouldn't let me use it so soon."

Ian glanced at the two crests and couldn't help but laugh. "Alright, I'll accept them. Thanks, both of you."

These two were quintessential Slytherins—everything, even gifts, had to be marked with their family crests.

Cassandra huffed softly, turning her head away to hide her slightly reddened ears.

"We're friends; no need for thanks," Draco said, punching Ian lightly on the shoulder. Then he frowned. "But who sent the third one?"

Ian ran his fingers over the broomstick embossed with the Slytherin emblem, his thoughts drifting.

His gaze lifted toward the staff table, searching for a familiar dark figure.

When his eyes met a pair of cold, serpentine ones, he smiled faintly.

"I'm guessing it's from Professor Snape," Ian said softly, a radiant smile spreading across his face as he glanced toward the potions master.

At the staff table, Severus Snape's hand, holding a quill, paused for a brief moment.

His gaze lingered on Ian's bright smile for a heartbeat before he looked away, returning to the parchment in front of him to write the next line.

Cassandra and Draco exchanged a glance, their expressions slightly peculiar.

Since when did their head of house have a habit of doing good deeds anonymously?

"Do you butter up Professor Snape regularly or something? Why does he like you so much?" Draco couldn't help but ask. "I'm his godson, and he's never given me anything like that."

"I just often consult him about potions," Ian shrugged, casually putting away the three Nimbus 2000s.

Cassandra gave Ian a thoughtful look, a silent question forming in her mind.

She had always felt that Professor Snape's attitude toward Ian was rather unusual.

Now it seemed that the usually indifferent head of house held Ian in surprisingly high regard.

Ian, sensing the subtle gazes from Cassandra and Draco, sighed internally.

How was he supposed to explain this?

Should he tell them that Snape had been infatuated with his mother, Lily, and now directed all his unspoken affection and guilt toward her look-alike son?

Ian shook his head, banishing the dangerous thought from his mind.

"No more classes this afternoon. Draco, want to try out the new brooms with me?" Ian asked, smoothly changing the subject.

"Of course!" Draco nodded eagerly, then turned to Cassandra. "Cassandra, want to join us?"

"Naturally," Cassandra replied gracefully, nodding as she joined Ian and Draco in leaving the Great Hall.

Not long after they left, the rest of the students in the hall also dispersed, leaving only the professors at the staff table, leisurely finishing their lunch.

"Severus, you gave Ian a Nimbus 2000?"

Professor McGonagall asked, looking at Snape with some surprise. "That doesn't seem like something you would typically do."

Snape's hand holding the knife and fork paused slightly, his tone calm: "I gave one to Draco as well, but Narcissa stopped it. She didn't want Draco riding a Nimbus 2000 too early, worried he might get overly excited."

"Oh, Narcissa is still the same as ever," Professor McGonagall said with a chuckle, then looked back at Snape. "Ian has quite the connections. I saw that both Vole family and Malfoy family gave him one as well."

Snape didn't reply, his dark eyes focused intently on the plate before him, as if lost in thought.

"That boy really does look a lot like Lily," McGonagall remarked, a touch of nostalgia in her voice. "Especially when he smiles—it's almost identical."

Snape's grip on the knife and fork tightened slightly. His voice was low and restrained: "Yes, very similar."

Dumbledore, smiling softly, glanced at Snape, his eyes twinkling with understanding.

"Ian is quite clever," Dumbledore said lightly. "In many ways, he reminds one of Lily, doesn't he?"

"Hmph." Snape let out a quiet scoff through his nose, not directly answering. Yet, his gaze drifted, almost involuntarily, toward the entrance of the Great Hall.

There, the Slytherin trio had just exited.
