Chapter 19: Into the woods
On the car ride to the Black Water Ridge forest. Hailey couldn't help but sneak glances at Alexander. He was a very eye-catching guy and his unique eye colour wasn't helping him avoid attention. Since his arrival, he often caught people staring at him with interest and curiosity and sometimes caution.
After a while of failing to restrain her curiosity, Hailey couldn't hold back any longer. "So you said you're Brad's friend. How come he has never mentioned you to me?" She had heard about Alexander from Roy.
The latter part of her question gained a raised eyebrow from Roy. After all one of the ways Alexander got him to agree to him coming along was that he claimed to be a friend of Brad.
"Hmm, same here. He's never mentioned a beauty like you either. The way I see it one of us should be very mad at Brad right now." Alexander joked, trying to play it off.
"Yeah, I...guess. It's just weird that he has a friend that would literally run into a dangerous situation for him yet has never mentioned him before." Hailey pressed.
"What is weird about not knowing all the friends of someone you know?" Alexander chuckled.
"Yeah, I guess you're right." Hailey couldn't argue with Alexander's reasoning.
But Alexander noticed a growing suspicion on Roy's face as he drove. He needed to put all present at ease and the best way to do that was...
Sighing, Alexander dawned a regretful expression. "Look, I don't really like to talk about this, but the truth is the last time Brad and I saw each other, we had a pretty huge fight. It was a stupid fight, I'm sure we both regret it to this day. I was visiting a friend when I heard that he might be in danger. I just knew I didn't want to leave things the way they were. So I came to help." He paused, his voice lowering, seemingly choked up. "Hopefully it's not too late. I want to at least tell him I'm sorry."
"Brad is lucky to have a friend like you." Hailey sympathised.
"Yes, I'm amazing, aren't I?" Alexander joked, trying to lighten up the mood, earning a little chuckle from Hailey. And an eased smile from Roy.
Alexander enquired more about Hailey and her family.
The conversation between the two continued, with Alexander occasionally tossing questions to Ben in the backseat to keep him involved. This lasted until Roy stated, "This is our stop, we'll travel the rest of the way on foot." bringing the vehicle to a stop before hopping out.
The group had arrived at the forest entrance. The terrain didn't allow for further travel by vehicle, so, they dis-mounted the pickup and began unpacking their gear.
While unpacking, they heard the hum of an engine and the crunching of branches—a car was approaching. A black Chevy Impala drove on the pathway towards them. Alexander guessed who they might be but simply watched on.
The group looked at the vehicle, which had come to a stop as two men got out, and made their way towards them. Alexander watched them from a distance, scrutinising their every move.
Roy being the de-facto leader, made his way through the group to meet the men.
"What brings you gentlemen out here?" Roy asked straightforwardly.
The shorter of the men answered, "I'm Dean, this is my brother Sam." He indicated to the tall man standing next to him. "We're rangers. We heard Hailey's story and what she planned to do and figured, why not lend a hand?" Dean explained coolly.
Scrutinising the two brothers, without taking his eyes off them Roy shouted to Hailey " Hailey, do you know these two?"
Hailey took a few steps forward to get a better look and shouted back. "Yeah, I met them back in town. They said they were rangers."
Alexander smirked knowing it was a fake identity they had assumed, like him being a friend of Brad.
Taking one last moment to contemplate. Roy said, "Alright, you two can join us but you ain't my problem."
This time the tall brother, Sam spoke up. "That's fine. We're just happy to help."
Roy turned around and walked back to the group. Sam went to the Impala and took a duffle bag from the backseat. Then he and his brother walk towards the group. Upon approach, the brothers surveyed the group and immediately took notice of Alexander.
What drew their attention, aside from the obvious and him being the tallest in the group, were his eyes—specifically, his one yellow eye.
"Dean!" Sam called harshly, tapping him, the reason for his agitation was clear.
"Yeah, I see it, Sam," Dean responded quietly and calmly, trying to ease his brother's tension.
The two finally reached the group. Hailey was the first to address them. "I didn't know you guys were coming?"
Dean chuckled. "Yeah, we heard your story and figured you could use the help."
"That would be great, thank you," Hailey replied happily.
"Don't know if we'll be much help. You seem like you can handle yourself pretty well. If there is a bear he might be the one in trouble." Dean playfully complimented, earning him a little chuckle from the girl and a nudge from Sam. "Dean." He whispered with urgency.
Dean simply ignored Sam's prompt and continued looking at Hailey, who had seen Sam's little gesture. She awkwardly tried to move the situation along. "Let me introduce you to everyone. Sorry, you said your names were Sam and Dean, right?"
"Yeah," Dean responded.
Gesturing to her brother she said. "Okay, this is my little brother Ben. And that's Alexander, he's a friend of my older brother's friend Brad. He was just passing through when he heard what happened and stayed to help. And of course, you've met Roy, he's going to be our guide."
Dean greeted them with a nod. Alexander nodded back, while Ben did nothing but stare at the two.
"Alright, we have to leave now if we wanna make good time," Roy announced, slinging his Browning BAR MK 3 hunting rifle over his shoulder.
The group set off.
