Chapter 52: Music Video VI
The hours melted away as Elena and her mom sat together, watching Ethan Jones' mesmerizing music videos. They began with Fire on Fire, a visually stunning piece featuring roaring flames juxtaposed with tender, emotional lyrics. The intensity of the visuals seemed to mirror the passion in his voice. Next was Counting Stars, where Ethan danced on a moonlit rooftop, the city lights below twinkling like stars. It was uplifting, with a catchy beat that had Elena humming along.
Riptide brought a change in tone—a playful, beachy vibe with Ethan strumming his guitar by the ocean, waves crashing behind him. They laughed together at his exaggerated expressions during the humorous bits. Then came Save Your Tears, a somber yet glamorous video with Ethan in a sleek suit, singing under a chandelier as rain poured down indoors. It left both mother and daughter feeling bittersweet.
Demons followed, a hauntingly beautiful video where Ethan wandered through an abandoned church, his bare voice echoing like a prayer. But it was Let Me Down Slowly and Runaway that truly captivated them. The latter, shot in a dense forest with Ethan barefoot by a waterfall, had a dreamy quality. His raw vulnerability in that setting was breathtaking. Finally, Young Dumb and Broke lightened the mood, with Ethan portraying a carefree teenager at a diner, flipping burgers and dancing with friends. It felt like a nod to simpler, joyful times.
By the time the last video ended, the warmth of the room had lulled both Elena and her mom to sleep, the laptop still playing a soft tune in the background. For the first time in a while, Elena felt a sense of peace, her mother's presence and Ethan's music soothing the pain of her day.
The morning sun peeked through the curtains, waking Elena gently. She stretched and looked around, realizing her mom wasn't beside her anymore. After freshening up and dressing for school, she headed downstairs, expecting her mom had already left for work. Instead, she stopped in her tracks, surprised to see her mom casually sipping coffee at the kitchen table.
"Mom? Why haven't you gone to work?" Elena asked, puzzled.
Her mom smiled, setting her mug down. "I called in sick," she said nonchalantly. "For both of us."
Elena's jaw dropped. "Wait... what?"
Her mom grinned and stood. "I figured we could both use a day off. So, what do you say? Would my favorite girl like to go on a date with me?"
Elena laughed, her heart swelling with affection. "A date, huh? What's the plan?"
"Well," her mom said with a mischievous glint, "step one is shopping for a new phone for you. Then, we'll see where the day takes us."
Elena couldn't stop smiling as she grabbed her mom's hand. "You're the best, Mom."
Meanwhile, across the country, Ethan Jones sat in the back of a luxury SUV, dressed in a hoodie and sunglasses to avoid being recognized. He had no idea that his music had just bridged the gap between a mother and daughter. He was absorbed in his phone, scrolling through fan messages, when his father, Adam, leaned over and tapped his shoulder.
"You know you don't have to come," Adam said. "We get that you're busy."
Ethan looked up, his expression softening. "It's Precious' moving day at Harvard. Of course, I'm going to come. She's my little sister."
Adam smiled proudly at his son as the car sped down the highway, carrying Ethan to a family moment he wouldn't miss for the world.
