Chapter 131 - 0128 The First Strategic Position
Chapter 131: Chapter 0128 The First Strategic Position
The surgery ended, and we discussed with the patient and his family whether they wanted to see the removed object from the surgery.
They firmly declined, unwilling even to look at pictures.
It’s a common practice; sometimes when the particular object that was removed during surgery is unique, it is shown to the patient and family to inform them.
The anesthesia control for Liang Fatty was excellent, allowing the patient to be able to walk out on their own.
Being wheeled in on a wheelchair but walking out by yourself presents an impressive contrast; this can significantly boost the patient’s confidence.
However, this patient hadn’t walked normally for several months.
Due to insufficient lower limb strength and his inability to support his weight immediately after surgery, coupled with the psychological fear induced by joint lock, his fears couldn’t be alleviated instantly.
Little Five and Zhou Can helped the patient sit up while Yang Ping encouraged the patient to move their knee joint.
The patient was afraid to move; Yang Ping helped the patient move as the patient was too frightened, leading to severe muscle resistance.
Song Zimo called a ward nurse to bring a walker to the entrance of the operating room to help the patient walk back afterward.
Everyone changed clothes and exited the operating room, where Zhou Can and Liang Fatty were already waiting with the patient in a wheelchair.
Upon seeing the significant decrease in the swelling around the knee joint, the patient’s son felt relieved.
Recalling the dense items he saw in the X-ray yesterday, he felt goosebumps; he dared not look at his mother’s operated knee again.
“Come on, try to walk with this walker. The more you walk, the faster you’ll recover. The less you walk, the harder it will be to recover. Be bold and walk!” Yang Ping encouraged the patient.
Song Zimo properly adjusted the walker, and Xiao Yang and Zhang Lin helped the patient stand up. The patient had good upper limb strength and could support her body with the walker.
After trying to take a few steps, she immediately gained confidence. The family members watching felt very happy as well.
After escorting the patient back to the ward, another patient was waiting for Yang Ping in the doctor’s office.
Professor Zhang’s patient – Hermes, was being pushed in by his fashionable wife.
“Hello, Doctor Yang!” Hermes greeted, shaking hands with Yang Ping.
“Hello, are you looking for Professor Zhang? He’s in the Department of Orthopedics.” Yang Ping knew he had been seeking Professor Zhang.
Hermes responded, “I went to see Professor Zhang in the outpatient department. He kept telling me to see you and have you admit me to the hospital. He said that he will visit here in a few days.”
In a few days, Professor Zhang would move to the Comprehensive Orthopedic Clinic to specifically handle complicated cases. He had applied to the hospital to move here, so Han and Director Tian would be released by having Professor Zhang’s help.
“Do you want to stay in the Overseas Chinese Building or here?” Yang Ping asked him; he had stayed in the Overseas Chinese Building last time.
Hermes chose to stay here. “With Professor Zhang here, I feel safe. Did you not see what happened last time in the Overseas Chinese Building? An old man next to my room suffered a sudden heart attack after surgery. He was rushed into emergency treatment and installing a stent; it was only after a night of turmoil that they managed to save him. I was frightened by it. I feel secure seeing Professor Zhang, so I will stay here. What about we charge according to the rates of the Overseas Chinese Building?”
While he was talking, he wiped away the sweat with a tissue. He was genuinely terrified.
Yang Ping asked Xiao Yang to admit him to the hospital. “It doesn’t matter; you can choose where to stay. We have our charging standard here. We can’t charge randomly. We also have separate suites, with a daily fee of 1200, and other charges are the same as ordinary patients. This single suite is better than the general ward but much worse than the Overseas Chinese Building.”
Every time Yang Ping talked to Hermes, he didn’t dare to look straight at him, as his wife’s clothes were too bold.
She unbuttoned her coat, revealing a tight, low-cut dress that boldly showed off her curves.
On the first day of the establishment of the Comprehensive Department of Orthopedics, a doctor group was created on WeChat, as well as a larger group for Comprehensive Bone doctors and nurses.
Professor Zhang had been added to the group. This octogenarian had an impressive mastery of his smartphone.
Looking at his phone, Yang Ping saw that Professor Zhang had sent a message in the big group chat. He wanted Yang Ping to admit Hermes to the hospital, complete the preoperative examination, and prepare for surgery next week.
Xiao Yang took Hermes aside to help him complete the hospital admission procedure on the computer and issue a certificate of hospitalization
A nurse came over and reported that a patient was waiting in the meeting room. Yang Ping went over and saw that it was Mr. Ning’s daughter.
She politely smiled, “Sorry to disturb you, Doctor Yang, do you have a moment to speak?”
Yang Ping welcomed her to sit down, “How is Mr. Ning feeling? Is his chest not hurting anymore?” He was planning to go and check on Mr. Ning after finishing up.
“There’s no pain in his chest area at all, he slept well last night, and this morning he even ate a steak, two pieces of bread, and a bowl of porridge. Our father is very grateful to you,” Miss Ning expressed with gratitude.
“Please, it’s what we are here for,” replied Yang Ping.
Miss Ning looked somewhat gloomy as she said, “The pain in my father’s chest has been completely relieved, but the pain in his liver can only just barely be relieved with morphine right now. I worry that the morphine will soon become ineffective. Could I bother you to use the pain-relieving method that you used yesterday when that happens?”
“If there is really a need, we will do our best. However, the pain in the liver area is much more complex than the pain in the chest,” Yang Ping honestly responded.
Miss Ning said sadly, “Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help. My father trusts you completely.”
“Thank you for your trust. When I get a chance, I will come to see him.” Yang Ping knew that this successful pain management had given Mr. Ning confidence, allowing him to walk the last stretch of his life with dignity.
“I will not bother you anymore, Doctor Yang,” Miss Ning said her farewells, shaking hands with Doctor Yang.
After sending Miss Ning away, Hermes was pushed into the doctor’s office by his wife: “Doctor Yang, sorry for the disturbance. Please make arrangements for my surgery next week. Professor Zhang will only be here next week.”
“Okay, don’t worry, I will arrange the surgery according to Professor Zhang’s schedule.”
Yang Ping gave him reassurances, and only then did Hermes leave with peace of mind.
Su Nanchen sent a WeChat message, about a fifteen-year-old football player who had a serious complex tear in the meniscus of his left knee. Surgery was needed for endoscopic meniscus repair.
There was a shortage of beds at their place, and they could not arrange for it temporarily. The patient’s family was very anxious, so he let the patient come to Sanbo to find Yang Ping.
Yang Ping immediately agreed, grateful for Su Nanchen’s recommendation.
Recommendations between doctors are usually not made unless there is a high level of trust.
Even if they do recommend, it’s usually from lower-level hospitals to higher-level hospitals, not among same-level ones, or from higher-level ones to lower-level ones. That is somewhat uncommon.
Yang Ping did not expect that he would be dealing with endoscopy these days.
The first surgery in the department was an endoscopy, followed by another one.
It seemed that just like the five-section replantation for trauma orthopedics, endoscopy for comprehensive orthopedics might be a breakthrough point.
Director Han called Yang Ping to his office. Without delay, Yang Ping immediately rushed over and found Director Han staring at a picture on the wall.
It was a blueprint for the development of orthopedics. Micro-trauma orthopedics had been marked with a blue tick.
Director Han held a red and blue marker in his hand: “In trauma orthopedics, the five-section replantation has made a name for itself, and the trauma emergency center is serving as a platform. Now the patient numbers have skyrocketed. Dr. Tan Boyun’s abilities are also outstanding, so the development of trauma orthopedics is completely on track and there is no need to worry anymore. The other departments, the spine and the joint are neither too hot nor too cold, and Sports Medicine only has twenty beds, which is seriously holding us back. Currently, very few hospitals in the country have developed well in the field of Sports Medicine, other than the third hospital in Beijing, Jishuitan, Huashan in Shanghai, and the sixth hospital. There is no big scale in the others. Our comprehensive orthopedics department has been open for three days now, and I keep thinking, should we find a breakthrough point, like trauma orthopedics, to make a name for ourselves?”
Using the marker to draw circles in his hand, Director Han turned around and sat down: “Xiao Yang, have a seat!”
“What do you think?” Director Han asked.
The Comprehensive Orthopedics department plays the role of the vanguard in the major orthopedic units, which is responsible for capturing territories.
After capturing a territory, it is handed over to other wards for operation. For example, the trauma orthopedics territory has been captured and handed over to Tan Boyun for operation.
This is Director Han’s strategy for the positioning of the Comprehensive Orthopedics department.
Yang Ping looked at the blueprint on the wall: “Director, the advantage of our comprehensive orthopedics department at the moment is the inherited system of the day surgery. We need to capitalize on the advantage of the system, for speedy surgery and rapid recovery. The most suitable surgeries in orthopedics for this system are sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, which would be the perfect breakthrough point!” Yang Ping suggested, reflecting the results of his consideration over the past few days.
“Hmm, the first day I saw you guys carry out surgery, I was thinking about this issue. In G City, besides the No.1 attached hospital which focuses a lot on Sports Medicine, the other hospitals do not differ much from us. They do not place much emphasis on it either. This is indeed an ideal breakthrough point. The first strategic position that our comprehensive orthopedics department should attack is this one.” Director Han stood up and marked Sports Medicine with a red tick.
“Director Gao graduated from Beijing North Hospital with a PhD. His educational background and technical skills can definitely support this department. As long as we occupy this territory, it can then be handed over to him to establish a Sports Medicine Center without any problems in the future.” Director Han lifted his teacup and took a sip of tea.
“Xiao Yang, I’ve seen your work with arthroscopy. Your skills are top-notch, just like when you perform finger replantation. Do you feel confident in capturing this territory?” Director Han was full of confidence.
“There should be no problems!” Yang Ping answered habitually.
“That’s exactly what I wanted to hear!” Director Han began humming a tune.
The mutual understanding between a Bole and a talented horse led to a strong rapport between the old and the young.
“The academic conference is coming up soon, and Director Tan has already started preparing. There are still slots for more lectures in the conference. You should come up with a theme and present it at the conference as a way of training yourself. Choose a topic on your own, prepare well, and hand it over to Director Tan. We will have a progress report meeting for the academic conference this afternoon, which both you and Song Zimo should attend.” Director Han instructed.
This academic conference was not for a small range in G City, but international.
Director Han used his own connections to organize this academic conference together with hospitals in Japan, South Korea, Israel, and Singapore – it was the Asian Trauma Orthopedics Summit.
The content of the conference revolved around cutting-edge techniques. Zhang Lin was responsible for the paperwork of the academic conference, like crafting the opening speech, designing the schedule, and so forth.
Yang Ping looked at Zhang Lin’s lecture schedule. Director Tan’s topic was “The Establishment of the Database for Robotic Surgery Cloud,” and Director Tian’s topic was “The Application of 3D Printing in Trauma Orthopedics.”
If he were to give a lecture, what theme should he come up with? He had yet to tackle any specific topic.
He had not been at Sanbo for a long time, and what he had accumulated was more about surgical operations. He hadn’t really dabbled in any of these cutting-edge technology topics.
To come up with a theme and present it at this conference would be quite challenging indeed.
