chapter 34
34 – Island getting hotter (3)
Chester and Monia take a shower with a waterfall as part of their daily routine.
An upset stomach or a headache can be treated with the herbs Chester has collected, but getting sick due to infection through the wound is unavoidable.
In this environment where there are no medical facilities and medical techniques properly, you have to be wary of even getting a scratch.
So, after Chester discovered the waterfall, he and Monia took care of it by washing and keeping it clean every day.
“Whoa! I washed everything.”
“Yes, yes.”
Monia, hiding in the bushes near the waterfall, walked out cautiously.
Chester quickly dried himself by building a campfire naked, whether or not Monia came out.
The weather is hot, but the humidity is high, so if you wait quietly, your body will dry out later than expected.
“Don’t look here!”
“I don’t see you.”
Glancing at Chester, Monia carefully began to take off her dress.
Monia’s dress had been forcibly torn and removed by Chester during a storm, so she could now put it on and take it off by herself.
After taking off her dress, Monia carefully put it on and entered the edge of the waterfall trembling.
“Hyaaagh! Tea, cold!”
Monia endured the cold and wiped her body everywhere with her palms.
I would never have dreamed of taking a relaxing bath under the care of a maid who has learned how to bathe professionally amidst the sweet fragrance after adding scented oil to warm bath water while lavishly cutting firewood and floating petals.
“Hick! Hee! Hee hee hee!!”
Rather, I had to wipe myself hard because I was chased by the cold and time because I did not know when I would be attacked by the floating matter of the river that was swept away by the waterfall.
“Hey! All done! haaa!!”
Monia, who came out with a body flushed from the cold, immediately hugged a nearby rock.
The warm rocks that absorb the sunlight warmly embrace Monia’s cold body.
“Whoa! Sigh! haaa… !”
‘It’s noisy every time.’
Clinging to the rock to get some warmth, Monia rushed to the bonfire.
“Sniff. It’s very cold.”
“Be patient.”
“yes.”
Monia, who made a snoring noise, eagerly dried herself and put on her clothes.
“Now let’s go see the trap.”
“Yes!”
After preparing something to use as bait, the two went downstream along the river and looked for a trap.
Unfortunately, only one fish was caught today.
“I only have one… .”
“There are days like this.”
There are good days and there are bad days.
After killing the rampaging fish with a rock, Chester put it in the basket and checked the trap.
A part where a slightly larger gap was intentionally left. After peeling off the tree branches that had been inserted into that area and blocking the gap, look inside.
After releasing the bag of leaves used as bait and throwing it into the river, he brought a new bait.
The new bait was a ‘snail-like creature’ collected from the beach this morning.
If anyone knew the identity of this creature, they would have screamed why they were using it as bait for fish, but it was of little value to Chester and Monia, who did not know it.
“Would this be useful as bait?”
“I hope it goes well. Aren’t these kids all over the beach? If it’s easier to find bait, we’ll be happy too.”
“Yes.”
Put the bait in the leaves, step on it with your feet, crush it, attach it to the trap, and put it back into the river.
After finishing all the work up to the third new pot, the two went back to the campfire to grill the fish and have breakfast.
While Chester trimmed the fish, Monia laughed and set the bamboo tub hanging next to her basket.
Two of them are water bottles that I always carry with me.
The other is a salt shaker with salt in it.
Next, the last one was a container of dried spices found in the forest.
This spice was selected from among the plants that Monia found in the forest, and she chose a guy with a scent she liked.
Put sesame seeds in river water in a cup, sprinkle a little salt on it, and boil it.
As the sesame seeds are really small in size, they cook quickly, so I prepared the next one right away.
Unlike Chester, who did not make it lightly with the idea of ‘as long as I can eat it’, Monia follows her own taste and brings out smoked pork made as carefully and deliciously as possible in a poor environment.
If asked what is the most valuable treasure on this uninhabited island, Monia would choose this smoked pork.
Because Chester is a person, not a thing.
“hehehe.”
Monia smiled strangely and took out a knife.
What Monia brought out now is the first piece of claw knife that Chester carefully crafted.
It is a knife made by pouring everything except for the time necessary for a day (hunting, trap management, surrounding exploration, planning and manufacturing of daily necessities, supply of necessary materials, observation to investigate the risk of unknown animals and plants, drying in the workroom, etc.).
‘Thinking of it like this made it feel sloppy… … .’
Monia, who spent an entire day just following Chester around, couldn’t imagine where the hell she would find the time to make something extra like this.
Of course, even so, considering Chester’s love of knives, it was by no means crudely made.
Compared to stone knives, it is unimaginably smooth, sharp, and durable.
It can be used for a long time unlike stone knives that need to be remade frequently because they get dirty or because the stone used as the blade gets caught in a hard place and breaks.
Of course, Chester, who was determined to make it properly, was not satisfied, so Claw Knife 1 passed into Monia’s hands.
Chester is making a new claw knife 2 while using a stone knife.
“Ohhh!”
Using a claw knife to slice smoked pork, Monia has come to understand Chester’s obsession with a good knife.
This pig is full of flavor, but it’s a wild breed, so the meat is tough.
But Chester’s carefully sharpened toenail knife sliced through the smoked pork as if it were nothing.
“Wow!”
“You do that every time you use it.”
“Amazing! It cuts so well!”
“It gets dull easily, so I have to change it often, but that’s okay.”
“I will change it! I have to write for the rest of my life!”
Sharpening would make it too thin to use, but Chester decided not to talk about it until the knife broke or was useless.
At best, I am very motivated, but there is no need to wake up early.
Monia brought boiled potatoes while the good smell of grilling fish spread.
After discarding the water and leaving only the persimmon seeds, I brought a small piece of wood and pressed the persimmon seeds to crush them.
While mashing the sesame seeds, add the seasonings and smoked pork pieces in between.
Then, use the thinly sliced shards of bamboo as a spoon and scoop them into small pieces to taste.
‘Well. I’m running out of salt.’
After adding salt, the dish begins with ‘mashed potatoes with spices and savory smoked pork with a hint of fruit’.
It is completed with ‘adding freshness of fruit’ at the end of that long cooking name.
The ingredients are candy fruits that Monia hates so much.
Monia held the candy fruit in her hand, mashed it tightly, and sprinkled the juice on the dish.
“done.”
Although the quantity is small, the dish was carefully completed.
Monia poured her cooking into a bamboo bowl that had been split in half and handed the water cup to Chester.
Chester gave the fish he had grilled and cut in half to Monia and started cooking his own.
As always, Chester boiled it roughly, adding water, potatoes, pieces of meat and fish, and various plants.
It was the chowder that Chester boiled and ate as usual after getting a glass of water.
“Hey, can’t we eat more carefully?”
“Well… .”
Monia ate the mashed potato with a piece of bamboo and ate the fish flesh with a fork crafted from the tip of a slightly wider piece of bamboo.
Next, get up early in the morning and sip the tea that you have previously boiled and put in a cup of water.
Flower tea made with slightly pale pink flowers was Monia’s favorite drink because of the faint sweetness of honey and the scent of flowers.
Of course, the faint sweetness of honey is only misunderstood by Monia’s tongue because of the scent of flowers.
It doesn’t actually taste like honey that much.
Chester, who had cooked the soup, lifted a glass of water and passed the soup over.
“Whoa.”
If Monia drinks flower tea, Chester drinks medicinal tea as always.
No matter how careful you act and eat, you never know when your body will get sick.
So Chester constantly brewed a herbal tea containing the leaves of certain plants and the roots of other plants to prevent headaches and upset stomachs.
Even Chester doesn’t know the botanical name.
I just learned from my father that it is a plant to look for when you have a stomach ache and a plant to look for when you have a headache.
When Chester finishes eating, Monia cooks again, and after Monia’s cooking, Chester boils the soup again and drinks it.
After sharing a glass of water, the two finished their meals, finished their morning routine, and went into the woods.
“The flower has fallen. Take more.”
“If you find it.”
“Shall we boil some fruit? Like Chester’s strawberry dough.”
“I told you not to touch it because it is a preserved food. If you let it go, you can keep it for a year. What if I mess with the preserved food when I can get other food?”
“Sheesh. I’m curious about the taste.”
“I won’t.”
“Are you going to finish the studio today?”
“yes. It took time because I was relaxed.”
“It is smaller than the house, though. Wasn’t the house built in two days?”
“It’s a low priority, so if something else happens, you’ll prioritize it, right?”
Just before going into the forest while talking like that, Chester stopped and put a leaf in Monia’s hand.
“The ingredients must have evaporated while washing, so apply again.”
“It’s annoying.”
As Monia said, she squeezed the leaf tightly in her hand, twisted it to extract the juice, and rubbed the juice all over her body with her hand.
Chester did the same, advising Monia.
“I hope you don’t want to be bitten by insects.”
