Tale of a Hedonistic wizard

Chapter 321: Unfolding drama

Jaegar nodded, understanding the unspoken warning in her words. "Thank you, Veronica."

With that, she hurried away, her mind racing with questions and possibilities. She made her way back to her office.

The next day,

In the opulent hall of the Autillius estate, the morning light filtered through ornate stained-glass windows, casting a kaleidoscope of colors across the polished marble floors. The grandeur of the room stood in stark contrast to the troubled atmosphere that now permeated it.

Jacqueline, a young woman with features that hinted at her relation to Jaegar, sat in a high-backed chair, her posture rigid with tension. In her hands, she clutched the latest edition of the Dawning Record, its front page dominated by a startling image of her half-brother.

The photograph showed Jaegar in a state she could scarcely believe – disheveled, haggard, a far cry from the polished young wizard she remembered.

Her brow furrowed with concern as she studied the image, her mind racing with questions and worries. What had happened to Jaegar during his absence? How had he ended up in such a state, and what were these charges being leveled against him?

The soft rustle of fabric announced the arrival of Emercella, Jacqueline's mother, and Angus' first wife. Emercella was a striking woman, her beauty enhanced by an air of quiet authority that seemed to command the very air around her.

"Dear, what are you doing here?" Emercella's voice was soft, but it carried an undercurrent of steel. "Aren't you supposed to go out?"

Jacqueline looked up, her eyes wide with a mixture of surprise and distress. Without a word, she held up the newspaper, allowing her mother to see the shocking headline and image.

"Mother, Jaegar's returned, and they've arrested him," Jacqueline said, her voice tight with emotion. "I need to go and meet him. We can't just leave him like this."

Emercella's expression hardened almost imperceptibly, a flash of something unreadable crossing her features before settling into a mask of maternal concern. "Dear," she said, her tone measured, "you have to report to the Hall of Imperium, don't you?"

At her mother's words, a subtle change came over Jacqueline. The worry and determination in her eyes seemed to flicker and fade, replaced by a placid, almost vacant expression. "Okay," she replied, her voice suddenly devoid of its earlier urgency.

Emercella approached her daughter, cupping Jacqueline's face in her hands with a gesture that seemed both loving and possessive. "You shouldn't trouble yourself over such things," she murmured, her thumbs gently stroking Jacqueline's cheeks. "You need to focus on your missions. You very well know, that we only have ourselves to rely on; we don't have anyone to look after us here.

You understand that, don't you?"

Jacqueline nodded, her earlier distress seemingly forgotten. "I understand, Mother," she said, reaching up to hold her mother's hands.

Emercella's lips curled into a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "I'm doing this all for your sake, my dear," she continued, her voice honeyed with affection. "Everything I do, every decision I make, it's all to secure your future, to ensure your place in this world."

As Emercella spoke, she observed every detail of Jacqueline's reactions. She had been trying very hard to divert her mind off Jaegar, and she thought things were going well until he appeared.

Jacqueline rose from her chair, the newspaper forgotten on the side table. "I should prepare for my duties at the Hall of Imperium," she said, her voice calm and detached.

Emercella nodded approvingly, releasing her daughter's face. "That's my girl. Remember, Jacqueline, our family's future rests on your shoulders. We must not let anything or anyone distract us from our goals."

As Jacqueline left the room, Emercella's gaze fell on the discarded newspaper. For a moment, her carefully maintained composure slipped, revealing a complex mix of emotions – anger, fear. Then, with a wave of her wand, she incinerated the paper, leaving no trace of Jaegar's image or the troubling news it brought.

The ashes of the newspaper settled on the polished floor, a stark reminder of the secrets and machinations at play within the walls of the Autillius estate.

The news of Jaegar Ambrose's arrest rippled through the magical empire like a shockwave, touching the lives of those who had known him and sparking intense curiosity in those who had only heard the whispers of his exploits.

Pierre and Jennifer, longtime friends and confidants of Jaegar from their days at the academy, wasted no time in making their way to Scroratint Central. The pair had always been fiercely loyal to Jaegar, standing by him through his most controversial experiments and theories.

Now, faced with the news of his arrest, they were determined to offer whatever support they could.

As soon as they heard the news, they couldn't help but wonder about the scale of the ministry's influence. It was mentioned in the newspaper that they have caught him in the bank.

Pierre's mind reeled about the circumstances surrounding Jaegar's arrest. No matter how much he thought about it, he didn't understand why Jaegar would come to the city where the ministry would be waiting for him. Judging by the latest look of Jaegar, he saw in the newspaper, he had many doubts creeping up in his mind. He seemed as though he was held captive by someone.

Pierre, a tall, lanky wizard with a shock of unruly red hair, paced anxiously in the grand atrium of the Ministry headquarters. His usual easygoing demeanor was replaced by a tense, worried expression as he argued with a stern-faced receptionist.

"You don't understand," Pierre insisted, his voice rising in frustration. "We've known Jaegar for years. If anyone can vouch for his character, it's us. We need to see him!"

Jennifer, her dark curls bouncing as she nodded in agreement, added, "Please, there must be someone we can speak to. A superior, perhaps? This is a mistake; Jaegar would never intentionally breach magical law."

But despite their impassioned pleas, the Ministry officials remained unmoved. The receptionist, a portly man with a thin mustache, shook his head firmly. "I'm sorry, but Mr. Ambrose is being held in maximum security. No visitors are allowed at this time, regardless of their relationship to the accused. Those are the rules, and they're non-negotiable."

Defeated but not deterred, Pierre and Jennifer retreated to a nearby café to talk. They knew that abandoning Jaegar was not an option, but they would need to find another way to help their friend.
