Chapter 62: Quinque Owl

[Ding! The host has completed the daily sign-in and received: 1 Attribute Point!]

Byakuya never misses his daily sign-in. After all, free attribute points are not to be wasted. Accumulating enough consecutive sign-ins can even earn extra points.

At this moment, he had already arrived at CCG Experimental Building in 1st Ward.

Earlier that morning, he received news that his quinques, Moonshadow and Wind Spirit had been repaired, and the SSS rated quinque, "Owl" had finally been completed.

Guided by the research staff, Byakuya retrieved the quinques that belonged to him.

"We noticed that Investigator Byakuya tends to favor dual-wielding techniques, so we've made Moonshadow and Wind Spirit more conveniently portable" a researcher explained.

"We also designed the quinques, Owl with this in mind. However, their cases are slightly larger than usual."

Essentially, the two quinques, which were typically stored separately, were now consolidated into a single case.

Thus, Byakuya received two slightly larger cases—one containing the Moonshadow and Wind Spirit, and the other holding the two Owl quinques.

To help him distinguish them, the researchers had even embedded gold detailing on the case holding Owl.

"Thanks" Byakuya said habitually.

This arrangement was indeed more convenient for him. The larger cases didn't matter, as he could store them in his Kamui Space, retrieving them whenever needed.

Which quinque he would use in battle would depend on the strength of the opponent.

Although in the original series, Owl didn't seem particularly impressive, it eventually became a crucial weapon in the hands of Kaiko, serving as a significant boss-like figure leading the Dragon's Orphans.

Byakuya was determined not to let one of the Owl quinques fall into the wrong hands again. In the original story, one had likely been given to Eto by Arima. After all, Arima himself only used the other Owl once before his death.

1st Ward, CCG Headquarters

"Byakuya, Arima, you'll be working with the Inaba Squad on this mission" said the CCG Bureau Chief, Yoshitoki Washuu.

"The squad leader, Inaba Warabe, and three of the other four members are half-humans. Train them well."

"Understood" Byakuya nodded.

Arima gave a slight nod as well.

Though Byakuya wasn't too familiar with the Inaba Squad, he recognized Inaba Warabe.

During their time in the Sunlit Garden, Warabe had been known as a prodigy and one of the most outstanding among the half-human children of his cohort.

Now, it seemed Inaba had just graduated from the Sunlit Garden and formed the Inaba Squad with three other half-humans and an unidentified human member.

The CCG Chief specifically assigning Byakuya and Arima to train them clearly indicated high hopes for the Inaba Squad.

Shortly afterward, Byakuya and Arima met the five members of the Inaba Squad.

Byakuya recognized all four half-human members, including Inaba, as well as the human member. The latter turned out to be Koori Ui, a future Special Investigator in the original story. Not only was Koori exceptionally skilled, but he was also highly intelligent.

With his long hair and delicate features, Koori could easily be mistaken for a girl, but he was indeed a boy, likely in his teens at this time.

...

"Investigator Byakuya, Investigator Arima" said Inaba Warabe. Despite looking fatigued, with perpetually tired eyes and the occasional yawn, he adhered strictly to protocol.

After a brief introduction, Byakuya learned that the five members of the Inaba Squad had recently been promoted to second-class investigators.

"Prepare your wills. Once they're ready, we'll head out" Byakuya said bluntly, skipping any small talk.

The Clowns ghoul organization they were tasked with investigating had at least two confirmed SS rated ghouls, making it a highly dangerous mission.

Byakuya was keenly aware that those two SS rated ghouls were Uta and Renji Yomo, both formidable in their own right.

Each time he wrote his will, Byakuya found himself addressing it to Eto.

Who else could he write to? Writing to Arima seemed absurd — Arima already had three Minami to worry about.

So once again, Byakuya addressed his will to Eto, filling it with trivial updates about recent publication progress.

...

Squad 0 and the Inaba Squad departed 1st Ward for 4th Ward

The investigation into the Clowns ghouls was officially underway.

For now, the operation was classified as reconnaissance. The CCG hadn't ordered an outright assault on Clowns as the group's numbers made them a formidable foe.

Squad 0 and the Inaba Squad's primary task was to gather intelligence on the group's operations in 4th Ward.

Eventually, the CCG would send reinforcements to aid in their efforts to eliminate them.

"4th Ward has a high ghoul population. Stay vigilant at all times" Byakuya advised the others.

"Understood" the five members of Inaba Squad responded with firm nods.

Initially, both squads stationed themselves at the local CCG branch in 4th Ward, using it as a base of operations for their investigation.

Since the operation had not yet transitioned into active combat, Squad 0 and the Inaba Squad worked separately for now.

Byakuya moved alongside Arima, which made it easier to handle his own objectives. Ostensibly, they were investigating the Clowns but Byakuya was also searching for the Kirishima family.

However, the first day yielded little progress. Neither Byakuya nor Arima wore the "White Dove" badge, avoiding unnecessary ghoul attacks and keeping their investigation discreet.

Nightfall

After dinner, Byaakuya returned to the apartment arranged by the CCG Branch for temporary lodging.

As he stepped into the unfamiliar space, his phone suddenly buzzed—it was a call from Eto.

She had likely gone to his home in 2nd Ward, only to find it empty.

"Bastard lolicon, where the hell did you go? Why aren't you home yet?"
