Chapter 34: Training The Mounted Brigade

WHOOSH

All around the goblins and direwolves, the trees were moving by the mere pressure three blurs were making as they moved.

"They can't be this fast. How are we suppose to be able to see them?" A goblin asked his fellow soldiers as the wind made the three hairs on his head rustle in all directions.

"Just watch," Hakurou ordered the goblins who were struggling to even see where the blurs where.

Suddenly, the blur that was second of the three stopped but before it could come into focus, quickly moved in the opposite direction. After it moved halfway across the training ground, it stopped revealing Benimaru with his sword out and pointing in the direction of the coming blurs.

Then, the first blur stopped just before Benimaru's sword could run it through and matched it with another sword. It was Shizu, and she effortlessly parried Benimaru and gracefully threw him towards the last blur. When Benimaru was close to stopping its momentum, the last blur quickly dodged and was knocked off balance, causing it to stall.

It was Shion, who looked annoyed that Benimaru was taken down so easily. She tried to start charging at Shizu again but before she knew it, Shizu had charged and punched her in the gut, sending her flying into a nearby tree. Shizu then stood still and looked down on both of them.

"How do they outrank her exactly?" Gobta asked without thinking about his words.

"What was that?" Shion said angrily as she appeared in front of Gobta and aimed a fist at him. Out of nowhere, Shizu appeared and caught the punch with no effort.

"Calm down Shion. Gobta is right. You two outrank me and I can take you both down so easily. It's pathetic. How are you suppose to serve Lord Henrik and help him create his ideal world if you're this weak."

"BUT..." Shion tried to argue in rage but Shizu, full of composure, cut her off.

"But nothing. We have done this exercise more than 400 times in the last two days, and our ministers of military can't even land a single hit on me. Out of those 400, I agree to stop using my ultimate skill after 50, while you two still did.

Shion, with your power, you should be able to at least make me try. Our lord used his own power to empower you, and this is the best you can muster.

Benimaru, you are counted among Lord Henrik's most powerful subordinate. With the exception of his new follower Orivaketh and myself, you are the best. Even if I'm number 1 and you 3, that shouldn't mean I can so easily take you down.

And Gobta, we're doing this exercise to improve these two, you lot should still be training. Lord Henrik will awaken tomorrow, and if hears that all you've done is watch us. Well, he may have to disciple you. Now, you two," Shizu said once again speaking to Benimaru and Shion.

"Resume their training, we're done with these games. I need to get back to my students and Liliana. And train with each other for the foreseeable future. Until you two can challenge me, I won't recognise you as my superiors."

With that, Shizu walked away without looking back at the monsters she'd been with for the last two days.

"Who does she think she is? Lord Henrik made us her superiors. And she speaks to us like this. Does she mean to go against Lord Henrik?" Shion said defiantly.

"Enough Shion," Benimaru said as he walked over to her and tapped her on the shoulder a few time. "She's right. We have to get stronger. Or at least get better with our new power. Lord Henrik entrusted us with this responsibility.

She wants to make his vision reality, I respect that. We on the other hand want to, but the difference is she is constantly working towards it. If we want to earn the respect of our subordinates, we need to show them we can serve our lord as well as she does."

Shion, knowing he is right but being prideful scoffed and turned away in arrogance.

"Okay, you lot," Shion said to the goblins. "Back to training. Gobta, Shizu and Lord Henrik believe you have the most promise of the brigade. Do not let Lord Henrik down."

Shion and Benimaru then started to walk away as they left Hakurou to the training.

"Shion. Do you believe what Lord Henrik told us at the Navamas dinner?" Benimaru asked curiously.

"Do you doubt our lord Benimaru?" Shion asked with a combination of suspicion and teasing.

"Never, however, it does seem unlikely. Gobta, evolving on his own and an ultimate skill. I'd believe Rigurd or Rigur, but Gobta. I just can't see it."

"Perhaps. But Lord Henrik broke the laws of the world when he made the city. He defied all logic when he tamed Lord Veldora. He defied reason when he got Lord Veldanava to ally with him. Then, in one meeting, our Lord got three Demon Lords to retire out of fear of facing him," Shion said and Benimaru stopped her.

"Wait a minute. I agree he got them to relinquish the title, but I don't believe it was out of fear," Benimaru tries to reason but Shion will have none of it.

"Nonsense, off course it was fear. What else would it be? Right people being there at the right time. Preposterous. They fear him, and with good reason.

The point Benimaru is this. Lord Henrik is smarter than humans tend to be. He knows a lot, and he broke the laws of this world when he made us what we are. Even Lord Veldanava couldn't explain it, and he made this world (Veldanava knows, he just doesn't want to reveal the details of Henrik's power without permission).

If he says Gobta will evolve and gain an ultimate skill, as unlikely as it may seem. I choose to agree with him."

"You're right. Lord Henrik knows best," Benimaru says accepting he was wrong.

"Of course I am. Now lets train. I'm going to show that human girl why Lord Henrik made me her superior if it's the last thing I ever do."

Back at the training grounds, Hakurou was making the goblins run a hundred laps and the last one had to run another fifty. Gobta, who thanks to his unbelievable luck, was in the lead and won in the end, much to everyone ones surprise.

"All of you, mount the wolves. It's time to see if you can work with them given your new skills," Hakurou ordered.

After mounting their wolves, with Gobta mounting Ranga, all the goblins tried to do laps while staying in perfect formation. As the cavalry unit of Camelot's army, it was their job to spearhead the front lines and take out as many enemies as quickly as possible.

However, with this show, it'd be easy for the enemy to take out the riders and cause the wolves to fall unfocused.

"Alright. Everyone, off the wolves," Hakurou shouted and they all obeyed.

"You, one who likes the princess," Hakurou said pointing at Gobwa.

"What is wrong with what just happened?"

Gobwa tried to muster an answer but he hadn't a clue. From an outside perspective, it might look like Hakurou was being the mean teacher picking on a single student. It was actually that Hakurou knew that Henrik planned to make Gobwa part of his person guard under Shion, so Hakurou would make sure he could protect their lord.

"I don't know sir," Gobwa replied, leaving Hakurou greatly displeased.

"You don't know?" Hakurou asked him with the annoyance clear.

"No sir."

Letting out a sigh, Hakurou asked a few other goblins but none of them could give an answer.

"Fine, I'll tell you. What happened was that was no formation. You were all bumping into each other and knocking some off the wolves. Are you trying to give the enemy a win? Do you believe that Demon Lord Guy Crimson is someone who you want to mess with?

Do you think his forces will hesitate to cut you down the first chance they get. There's a war coming to this forest. One that will show the world what our king is made off, and he needs us all at our best. Even with lord Veldanava and Veldora at our side, he wants us to train rigorously. Why do you think that is?"

"Because he wants us to be safe," Gobwa replied.

"Yes. Because we are the kings army, and unlike most human kings who treat their soldiers as disposable trinkets, Lord Henrik wants us all to come home from this fight. For longer than I have lived, monsters simply followed the strongest.

Sometimes out of loyalty, but usually out of desperation or fear. Lord Henrik is the end of that. We follow him because we know he is right. Because he wants to make everyone's lives easier. And this is the performance you give him.

The reason you just failed is because of Ranga. Ranga was asked to not tell the wolves what to do, and without him doing that, you fell into disarray.

We all know Ranga's main assignment is to protect the children. That means unless Lord Henrik tells him, he won't be fighting alongside us. You all need to learn to fight efficiently with or without him.

So again, Gobta. I want you leading the charge. And stick to the formation I taught you."

For the next few hours, the goblins and wolves trained endlessly until they physically couldn't anymore. Hakurou knew that they still had a while to go, but Gobta had started to show leadership qualities so he had hope they'd become a force to be reckoned with within 4 months.

A little ways away in the forest, on her way back to the city to teach the kids, Shizu suddenly stopped dead in her tracks.

As she turned around, she had her hand ready to draw her blade should the need arise as she was met with a tall and beautiful blonde man.

"Leon," Shizu said with a mix of anger and surprise in her voice.

"Hello Shizu. It's been a while. I was hoping we could talk," Leon said flatly.
