The Assassin's Legacy

Chapter 12: CHAPTER 12:The Envelope

" Home sweet home" Leo smiled as he stepped through the golden portal that dropped him at the entrance of the night castle. He took in a whiff of the precious mana absent air and gave a sigh of relief before he entered.

The night castle at noon was mostly quiet save for the few whisper and chatter among the youths of the order who could be seen playing and moving through the courtyards. A scrawny teen with brown shaggy hair upon seeing Leo left the group of friends he had been discussing with, and ran all the way from the market to the gates where the blue haired assassin stood.

"Good to see you brother" the young teen echoed as he bounced up and down nervously "So did you remember to get me my present? Leo on hearing the question looked around, scratching his neck in embarrassment "Of course I did Tyler. How would I ever forget to give my younger brother a gift on his own birthday? Tyler noticing his brother's reaction shouted "You FORGOT!

"You can't blame me bro, I mean it's not easy for you to fight a group of rebellious elves, survive a murderous demon, attend a meeting of epic leaders and still remember about your little brother's gift" Leo ruffled his brother's hair before he continued "But not to worry I promise to make it up to you. By the way is dad in?

Tyler didn't reply as he tried to grasp the complexity of all the threats that his brother had claimed to face in the past two days and to make matters worse he knew that Leo rarely lied about such things." Yeah dad is in"

*AWOOOOO*Howled a figure that Tyler knew far too well. "Hello fang Bethran". "How you doing little man? Bethran asked while he shook hands with Leo.

"Quite fine" Tyler replied and with a confused look he pointed at the dazed elf that laid on his shoulders. "Higher up business" Bethran replied "And also I brought a little present for you".Bethran using his free hand reached into his pocket and brought out a box that was riddled with many holes. "What's in it? Tyler asked his face beaming with curiosity."Go ahead open it". Tyler with an excited nod opened it seconds before he dropped on to his butt screaming.

*Hiss Hiss*

A three-foot purple cobra slithered out of the box and stared at the scared teen before it flickered its red forked tongue in a show of dominance. "Happy birthday kid" Bethran said before he broke into a fit of laughter when he saw the cobra pursuing a frightened Tyler into the castle.

"You are one sick and very disturbing man" Leo said, shaking his head and fighting the urge to join Bethran in his fits of laughter. Bethran wiping of a tear from his eye smiled "That is a gift he will never forget".

"Of course if he lives to remember it". Bethran simply rolled his eyes "That magical cobra wouldn't even hurt a rat not to talk of a fourteen-year-old kid, they will eventually become friends I can assure you that". "Firstly cobras even magical ones eat rats and secondly for the snake's sake I do hope that they get along" Leo said though he knew that the cobra wouldn't hurt Tyler for he knew that the magical cobra was just messing with the boy and will eventually take on a more docile approach when it notices other assassins. "Care to join for a good old fashioned torture? Bethran asked gesturing at the elf. "Not today, I need to rest before tomorrow evening" Leo replied shaking his head in sadness. "Why not take the whole week off, after all I'm sure the elders would not need another report from you after the meeting, not to mention that with your recent accomplishments, another mission would be the last thing they will want to give you.

Leo with a pained smile brought out a golden envelope; before giving it to a beaming Bethran. "Wow so you have been invited to the Phoenix's ball" Bethran said smiling "And the invitation is even VIP""It's going to be nothing but social torture for me and I'm pretty sure that the elders will use this as an opportunity for them not to go and will instead pick me to represent them at the event" Leo said with a frown while he waited for Bethran to finish reading the whole contents of the letter. The two after realizing that they had been standing at the gate for like an hour decided to continue their discussion as Leo escorted his friend to the basement of the castle.Currently they were inside the silent castle descending down the stairs that led to the underground basement."How I wish we could trade places" Bethran sighed handing the envelope over.

"You should be glad for while I stand in an event of a thousand lights, you on the other hand have the opportunity to sleep peacefully in the comfort of your room."Don't be such a grouch.

Do you know the amount of noble ladies that would be in attendance not to talk about the fancy food that are simply to die for? Bethran said licking his lips.

"Sure, all that will be fine except that I am going to be forced to attend a ball when I don't even know how to dance" Leo lamented shuddering at the thought. Bethran taking a look at Leo's long athletic body laughed "Don't worry, who knows maybe no lady will 'invite' you for a dance though I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be the other way around"."You will be fine so long as you remember to smile and pretend to be interested in whatever anyone has to say" Bethran said and was already heading towards the torture chamber in the basement but stopped when a very important question hit him.

"Come to think of it what are you going to wear? Leo stopped walking and looking back smiled "I will just borrow a suit from any assassin that is my size".Bethran hearing this laughed so hard that the elf's body had fallen off his shoulder and had begun to tumble down the stairs that led to the basement "Good luck finding a suit in an order of antisocial assassins".Leo hearing this smiled and with a frown pointed down the stairs reminding Bethran of the recently fallen elf. "Don't forget to tell me how it went" Bethran finally said, his voice echoing as he descended down the stairs to pick up the elf that had still not woken up.

The elf's body remained on one of the steps; some bones broken with a large bump on his pale forehead. Bethran picked up the body and looked around to be sure that nobody had seen what had just happened.

Placing his ears on the elf's chest he gave a sigh of relief when he ascertained that the elf was still alive."Now to hope that he wakes up" Bethran thought as he hoisted the elf over his shoulder before he continued down the last flight of stairs that led to the torture chamber.*******************************************************************Hello dear readers I hope you have been enjoying this past chapter.
