The little girl’s crying suddenly made Murong Yunxi panic. She hurriedly wiped away the little girl’s tears, trying to comfort her in a soothing voice, “Kid, don’t cry. It’s auntie’s fault…”

A figure of a happy girl appeared in Murong Yunxi’s mind, rushing towards her with a smile and calling her “mommy”.

That little girl had a pair of big eyes with long, curly eyelashes, and looked really cute. However, this little girl in front of her did not resemble the one in her memory.

The little girl stopped crying when she heard Murong Yunxi asking for her name, but she looked at Murong Yunxi, with her eyes brimming with tears. She could not stop sobbing, because she had not recovered from her earlier sadness.

Looking at the little girl who was weeping buckets, Lu Yang moved forward and held her in his arms, trying to comfort her.

The doctor stepped forward to examine Murong Yunxi, and asked some standard questions. Then, he arranged for her to undergo other tests.

In the morning, after a thorough check, the doctor came to a conclusion: Due to a prolonged period of being bedbound, Murong Yunxi was still weak and needed time for her body to recover. In short, her condition was fair. Due to her brain injury, only a part of her memory was intact. He believed that she would get better gradually.

Lu Yang felt both happy and worried, when he heard this. His mind, however, was in a complicated and tangled mess.

Murong Yunxi felt helpless, as the little girl in front of her seemed to fall into a pattern of emotions. She would stop crying when she called her “Niannian”, or when the girl called her “mommy”. Murong Yunxi clearly knew that this girl was not her daughter, even though her memory was in a mess. The girl who kept appearing in her mind, was the real Niannian.

Lu Yang described the general situation in detail to Murong Yunxi, but she still did not know why she would hold this girl in her arms, or whatever had happened at that moment. She even could not even remember that her name as Murong Yunxi, but as Yun Muxi. It seemed that she even forgot about Gong Yu, at times.

The chaotic memories made her helpless, somewhat lost and upset.

Gu Yuxuan was deep in sleep, but suddenly heard a scream coming from Niannian’s room.

She suddenly got up and lit the lamp, while Murong Xu also stood up and asked in confusion, “What happened?”

“I thought I heard Niannian screaming!” Gu Yuxuan felt scared and nervous.

Murong Xu held his breath and listened carefully, “I don’t seem to hear anything!”

Gu Yuxuan also heard no more sounds, but she could not settle down. “Well, I should go and check, just to make sure that nothing has happened.”

She put on her slippers and stepped out of the room. Since Murong Yunxi disappeared, Niannian had been staying with Gu Yuxuan. Her bedroom was next to Gu Yuxuan and Murong Xu’s bedroom.

Gu Yuxuan gently opened Niannian’s door. Under the dim light, the bedroom was gloomy. There seemed to be a faint ,squeaky noise coming from the stillness.

Gu Yuxuan walked in and found a hump on the bed. Niannian’s furry head could not be seen, while her body was curled up under the quilt.

Stepping forward, Gu Yuxuan gently pulled back the quilt, and found that Niannian was sobbing quietly. Gu Yuxuan was shocked and held her small body in her arms, asking softly, “Niannian, what’s wrong? Did you have a nightmare?”

Niannian raised her small face, and her big eyes were full of tears. She looked pitiful. When she saw who it was that came, she threw herself into Gu Yuxuan’s arms and burst into tears.

Gu Yuxuan comforted her in a low voice, “Niannian, do not be afraid. It’s just a nightmare, which is not real. Don’t cry!”

Niannian was still sobbing, in between telling her about her grievances. “Mommy Xuan, my mom abandoned me. I saw her holding another girl. The girl was also calling her mommy and she treated the girl so well. She smiled at her, held her, sang a song to her, so she could sleep well, told her stories, and played games with her. What she used to do with me, she is now doing it with another girl, and she even ignores me… Oh, Mommy Xuan, my mom has abandoned me. What should I do?”

Niannian was crying bitterly in Gu Yuxuan’s arms, while snot ran from her nose, which Gu Yuxuan was unprepared for.

She was going to be a mother soon and would have her own baby, but she did not know how to cope with a sobbing kid. She became somewhat flustered. How could your mom hold another kid, but ignore you? Niannian is so cute and the most important person in your mom’s life.”

Niannian raised her head, when she heard that she was the most important person in her mom’s life, and looked at Murong Xu in surprise. “Uncle Xu, are you serious? My mom will not abandon Niannian? Am I the most important person to my mom?”

“Of course, mom loves you the most before, right?”

“Since my mom loves me most, why did she not come back to see me? I miss her so much, but I dare not tell you. I am afraid that she will hate me if I delay her work, and will not love me anymore. So, I keep the yearning in my mind, and am waiting for her to come back. However, she is still not back, even though I have been waiting for so long.”

Niannian’s words undoubtedly set off waves of emotion in Gu Yuxuan and Murong Xu’s minds. How could they tell such a small kid that they did not know where her mother was, and might not come back anymore.

“Niannian, your mom has not finished her work yet, and will be back in a few days!” Murong Xu could only tell Niannian that, as he did not know how else to comfort her.

“Really? But, last time, Mommy Xuan told me my mom would be back in a few days, while the time before that, she told me the same thing. Before that, she told me my mom would come back on my birthday! However, my birthday is already over and so many days have passed already, after Mommy Xuan’s promise, and she is still not back. Will she ever come back?”

Niannian’s words shot out from her small mouth, like a machine gun. Every single word was like a bullet, shooting at Gu Yuxuan’s mind. She blushed and felt worried. She could not refute Niannian’s words, or say anything else to comfort her.

Murong Xun sighed, patted Niannian’s head, and straightened her messy hair. “Niannian, Mommy Xuan did not mean to lie to you. She thought your mom could finish her work in a few days, but she did not. Even after a few days, she still has not finished her work. Actually, we also don’t really know when she will come back, but can only tell you our guess.”

“Will it be possible that my mom will never come back?” Thinking of this possibility, Niannian burst into tears again.

No matter how Gu Yuxuan and Murong Xu tried to comfort her, Niannian did not stop her crying. Perhaps, her emotions had been suppressed for too long, and it was finally released and out of control.

“Of course.”

Just when Murong Ye finished speaking, Niannian got out of his arms and ran out of the room.
