THE BILLIONAIRE WHO LIVES NEXT DOOR

Chapter 8: A match not made in heaven

Emma

I watched with a racing heart as Mr. Don exited the underground car park with Liam. My thoughts spiraled around as I wondered if Mr. Don guessed right.

He did say a humongous mosquito. It was impossible to have guessed that I actually had something with the new employee. He never notices that with Charles, Liam should be more difficult.

I tried to convince myself as I strolled to my office, my gaze to the ground while I headed to the elevator only to bump into the least person I wanted to see this morning.

His hands were shoved into his pocket while he stood straight, staring past me. I couldn't help but wonder if he had been there for a long time or if he had just gotten in, either way, he was avoiding my gaze and hopefully, he would keep his mouth sealed.

Just as I walked another female rushed in, she pushed past my shoulder and caused me to stumble inside before the elevator doors shut and only when I turned to her did I understand why she was excited.

It was the lady from the human resources department. Charles's new girlfriend.

"Baby," Charles exclaimed at the other side of the elevator, I turned my gaze away from them as it felt wrong to be staring at the weird couple. For the lady to still be with him, I guess she knew I was with him and she didn't mind at all which sounded crazy because only a fool would know this side of Charles and still date him.

I prayed for the elevator to reach the ninth floor faster than ever as the sound of lips smacking filled the confines of the metallic wall. I did not need to stare back at them to know they had each other's tongue down their throat, the sound was enough to send me scrunching up my face in disgust.

Charles had tried to do that to me countless times while we dated. He always wanted to kiss me at work areas, he would even beg me to stroke his member, which never made sense to me. I never agreed and I would always feel guilty for leaving him hanging and then we would have a fight and get back together in a few days. As the memory flashed through my mind, I couldn't help but cringe, how was that not enough to showcase his red flags? It was utterly disgusting just as what he was doing behind me.

The two of them must have been a match made in heaven. Despite the small tug in my chest whenever I saw him—not because I still had feelings for him, but because of my own foolishness in settling for someone like him—I couldn't deny feeling grateful for the woman in his life. She played a crucial role in opening my eyes by taking him away, and I sincerely hope they stay together forever.

After what felt like forever, the elevator doors chimed as they slid open, and without hesitation, I rushed outside, heading straight to my desk.

However, just as I settled on my chair in my compartment, a figure overshadowed me from behind. I could feel as he slowly leaned down on me before his warm breath hit my nape.

"Tell a soul and I will make your life a living hell" He whispered from behind before walking away.

Only when he was gone did I realize I had sucked in my breath. Who wouldn't be tense? My ex literally walked behind me to threaten me.

I had not even thought of saying a word to anyone. I had no friends at work, and I had no guts to report to the department head. At the moment, I just wanted peace, but it seemed Charles still thought I was hooked on him. Which was ridiculous, because all I wanted was for him to be out of my life entirely. If I didn't love my job and had bills to pay, I would have moved out of this city already.

"Lost in thoughts?" My heart jumped at the sound of the deep voice as I abruptly turned with wide eyes to the one settling himself by my side.

"What are you doing here?"

Is he supposed to be sitting here? Right next to me?

He frowned and rested his back on his chair, "You don't want me to be here? It's unavoidable, I'm your junior, and you are to put me through everything. See, it's a handwritten letter from Mr. Don" He stretched out his hand which held a paper, flaunting it to my face as he gestured for me to read it.

I snatched it away from him and scanned the written content, indeed Mr. Don had demanded I put him through for the next few months.

"Besides you are not done with the tour from yesterday, I think we should start from there"

I rolled my eyes and dropped the paper on my desk before getting to my feet. "Fine, follow me then"

Upon stepping away from our desks, Charles's voice erupted from across our desk, causing all heads to turn to him.

"Where do you think you both are going to?" He questioned, as he rose to his feet, flickering his gaze between us.

Liam threw his gaze away as expected, and I had to cover up for his attitude not to be noticed as I walked towards Charles's compartment.

"Mr. Don requested I give him a tour," I tried to explain politely Charles looked passed me to Liam who was still standing by his desk with his gaze wandering away.

"And you? Will you not greet your team leader, don't you have a mouth to greet and speak for yourself, are you that much of a coward?"

Tension enveloped the office as Liam finally turned to Charles, glaring at him. I'm sure everyone could see he was glaring at his team leader. My heart stood on a string as I feared what was to come.
