Chapter 17: The Duo's Conflict
"You say as if it was what you hoped to do!"
"It was."
"It shouldn't be!"
"And why not? Were you there to help me out of the hell I was in? Were you there to hear the children around me scream and cry out, begging not to be poisoned?"
The rabbit fell silent instantly, feeling a pang of guilt for not understanding his partner's situation. After all, how could anyone discern what was the right choice when they were showered with abuse or pure torment?
He had taken his own life for granted and could not bear to comprehend how much pain the young girl had to endure to actually find an out with one the most notorious groups of the Underworld. His depressive episodes seem mundane compared to her problems.
And yet... Mavislin never faltered nor gave up. Never did Matt see the girl ever lose hope but instead, she would rise to the challenge at hand. Even going so far as to thrive in battle, and enthusiastically murder her enemies.
"I may be wrong about this but there were very brief accounts from Raven stating that they used to set up an orphanage within the Death's Zone to gather recruits. And judging by the flow of how it was going to be, I'm not surprised that he spoke of the truth."
"However, not all children were born equally so those who were deemed 'less than fit to even hold a weapon' were promptly discarded. But that's not unheard of to anyone of the area so no one cared."
Mattheos could hardly believe his ears. The leader was nothing more than a manipulative creep using young recruits to carry out his sordid tasks. Enraged, the bunny sprang to his feet, his fury palpable. Mavislin, taken aback, tilted her head in puzzled confusion.
"You knew what you were getting into when I offered you a seat in the Corrupted Syndicate. I never sugarcoated anything when my blade grazed your side as you lay defeated in front of me."
"I offered you to run away so I could kill you later when you are a bit more ripe or to join me as my partner as we have very clashing fighting styles and it would make for a better journey in the long run. Far more rewarding than always being alone. You chose the latter."
Mattheos shivered as he recalled the first encounter he had with Mavislin. He had been a wanderer, a hunter who went around surviving and taking in the sights that the world had to give him.
On rough occasions, Matt would be asked by the locals to quell certain wild beasts. But one fateful night changed the course of his life forever.
Finding himself rammed into a corner and with one single slash away from being a memory, Matt was faced with the terrifying gaze of a dragon girl.
He recalled that he would rather accept anything that didn't lead him to dying as a result so that's how he was stuck with Mavislin and joining the Syndicate.
