The Engagement Was Broken Off at the Wedding Hall

I think I’ve lived a pretty good life so far.

I studied hard in school.

I’ve had a relationship or two, though not too many.

While others go on vacations, staycations, omakase dinners, and overseas trips, wearing nice clothes and eating luxurious foods, I’ve endured it all.

“Ah…”

All I’ve ever wanted was a “happy life.”

“…Ha…hahahaha…!”

My reflection in the mirror.

The sparkling image from when I first entered society is nowhere to be found, replaced by a dim, sputtering candle-like existence on the verge of being snuffed out.

“hahahahaha! Ahahahahaha!”

My children see me as a slave,

My lifelong partner has become the most hated boss,

And day by day I grow ill and weak, living a life not even equal to that of a pig in a cage.

“—Ah.”

By the time I realized, it was already too late.

Far, far too late.

And so, because of that–

“…..Angel.”

I speak to the sky.

I cry out to the exalted one high above.

“If you can hear me, if you’re listening…”

I regret. I resent. I’m tired and exhausted.

The only thing I wish for is one:

“Take me back.”

To that day when I made rash vows.

No, even further back, to when I could have made better choices.
