Chapter 28: 28
"I have some news for everyone, but since my son brought in a new person, I would like to ask who he is first!" the Emperor smiled at "Michael".
That being said, Michelle bowed down and smiled. "I thought I've already introduced myself to you, Your Majesty, but I might remember wrongly. I'm Michael Grayson!" her voice was calm, but as she was bowing down, she lifted her gaze to stare at the Emperor, her purple eyes narrowed and openly scheming, even somehow mocking.
"I remember now." Seeing that gaze, the Emperor remembered the letters on his bedside table and a cold shiver run down his spine as his face turned even paler. He finally understood why the Eight Prince suddenly rose in power with the help of a single person. Because the single person helping him had power inflicting bone-shattering fear. No wonder the other Royal children didn't dare raise their voices. They must have been horrified by something that the Michael person did.
But the Emperor's guess was far off. It was only made so it looked like Michelle scared off the other Royal children. In reality, the Royal children were threatened by the Archduke, because he held some... valuable information over their heads. Like father, like son. Just as the Emperor was a despicable greedy bastard, his children were too, and it wasn't hard to dig it up. Especially with David Elether's help.
"Your Majesty, why have you called us today?" one of the officials asked when "Michael" was done introducing himself.
The Emperor snapped back to reality and pretended to smile helplessly. "As you all must know, my days are numbered, and as I'm no longer able to take care of the Empire, I've decided to crown a new Emperor." The Emperor's words caused whispers amongst the officials, but they quickly quietened down and one stepped forward.
"My King, if I may voice my doubt, the one sitting in the seat of a Crown Prince is the youngest of Your Majesty's children. We are worried whether he can be a good Emperor if he succeeds the throne." The official sounded like he was worried, but in reality, he just wanted the Second Prince to succeed the throne since he was one of his supporters.
The Emperor's eyes shone, as he was delighted that he might not need to hand his crown down to the Eight Prince. As more and more officials started "voicing their doubts", the young Eight Prince started feeling nervous, but just as Michelle told him before, he didn't move, remained calm and waited for the result.
In the end, the Archduke spoke up. "Your Majesty, the Archduchy supports the Eight Prince in succeeding the throne. We also agree that the Eight Prince is young, so we would propose the idea of the next Emperor having a Prince Regent until he can rule by himself!"
When the Archduke's words fell, everyone turned silent. The Emperor glanced at "Michael Grayson", his gaze meaningful. So that was why he was helping that hateful son of his. To gain power for himself.
The Emperor's thoughts were written on his face, but he couldn't say them and could only turn back at the Archduke. "Who do you propose to be the next Emperor's Prince Regent?" he asked, but his words were clearly choked by anger and disgust. He was helpless against the Archduke since no one knew the Archduke's real power. It was even rumored that the Archduke was one of the few geniuses who could cultivate spirit power.
Everyone was expecting the Archduke to say "Michael Grayson" but the answer was different. "Your Majesty already knows the person. The Archduchy proposes the master of the information guild, David Elether. He's well known for his wit and character. He would be a great Prince Regent."
Hearing the name David Elether, the Emperor's blood boiled in his veins. The Archduke wanted to make the prick who refused to bow down in front of him the Prince Regent?! He couldn't accept that, but suddenly feeling "Michael Grayson's" cold gaze on him, the Emperor went pale with fear as he gulped down. "Approved..." he choked down. "I shall excuse myself now for a moment..." he stood up, and a servant led him away.
The officials all started a heated debate and Michelle, the Archduke and David just watched from afar.
After about half an hour, the Emperor returned, his complexion a bit better. Michelle glanced at him and lifted a brow. He had calmed down quite fast. Everyone bowed down to the Emperor. The Emperor stood in front of all the officials and opened his mouth to speak. He really abhorred what he was about to say, but he was cornered. He was scared that if he didn't do as the Archduke and "Michael Grayson" wanted, "Michael" would kill him in his sleep. "My dear officials!" he put on a benevolent smile as he spoke. "I announce that I'm abdicating, and I'm crowning the Eight Prince the next Emperor!"
With that, a servant handed him the crowing ceremonial crown and the Eight Prince stood up. As the Eight prince bowed, the Emperor placed the crown on his head. "Be a good ruler, my son!" he said with a smile, but his insides were turning.
The Eight Prince straightened his head and all the people except the Emperor, from the moment on Emperor Emiritus, knelt down to greet the new Emperor. "Long live His Majesty, the new Emperor! May the Empire soar to new heights under Your rule!"
The crowning ceremony was very hasty because of the Emperor Emiritus' poisoning and fear, but no one dared to complain.
The Eight Prince led the Emperor Emiritus away from the meeting hall as was a tradition and returned to sit in the Emperor's seat. "Tomorrow, this time of day, Prince Regent will be named!" For a nine-year-old, his voice was steady and calm, as Michelle taught him. "Meeting dismissed!" He stood up, and followed by Michelle, he left the hall.
After leaving the meeting hall, the Eight Prince wanted to go back to the Cold Palace, but a servant led him to the Emperor's chambers. As the new Emperor, he was going to live there.
"Teacher?" he turned to look at Michelle when the servant left. "Will I do good?" he asked. He was still just a nine-year-old child, so suddenly having so much responsibility was scaring him.
Michelle smiled a bit and ruffled his hair. "Marko... You know David Elether. He will help you and teach you. He's more knowledgeable than me, so with his help, you'll become an amazing Emperor just like your great-grandfather."
"Teacher, you won't be teaching me anymore?" the Eight Prince, Marko Wajana asked.
Michelle nodded a bit. "I'm sorry, Marko, your teacher has to leave."
"Will I ever see you again?!" His voice turned urgent.
Michelle petted his head. "No... But you will meet someone similar." She reached towards her face and took off her disguise mask, revealing her stunning face. "I'm Michelle Grace, Your Majesty. I'm sorry for deceiving you." With that, she used Shadow Spirit Steps and disappeared from the chamber.
Leaving the Imperial Palace, Michelle went back into the Archduchy and left Mare and Snow in their rooms. She closed herself in her room and changed her clothes. Then she sat cross-legged on her bed once again, and started cultivating.
One of the few things she achieved within the three months in the Imperial Palace was that she was able to start cultivation. Though it was slow, and she barely had any achievements, she was satisfied that there was at least some result. And she believed that as time went on, her cultivation speed would go up as she would master the technique to cultivate. At the moment, it was so slow because it was hard for her to concentrate on the technique since she barely understood it.
As she cultivated, Michelle felt a very small, but steady flow of spirit energy into her body. Pulling it through her spirit veins into her dantian, Michelle felt like her dantain was a puddle of water, and the spirit energy water slowly dripping into the puddle. But feeling the spirit energy drip into her dantian was quite depressing for Michelle, because no matter how many small drops fall into a puddle, if they fall slowly, the liquid would evaporate, the puddle wouldn't grow bigger and sometimes would even turn smaller.
It was depressing. But Michelle already saw the improvement compared to the start when she couldn't even sense the spirit energy surrounding her. At the moment, she could not only sense it, she could also pull it into her body and make it her own. And since she discovered a technique to do it, she would master it and speed up the pace at which she pulled it in. She just needed time to improve. And the three months or so until the Emperor would die were just that, because in that time, she wouldn't be bothered by anyone. That was what she asked of the Archduke for killing the Crown Prince.
