Chapter 170
“So, so, I mean…!”
“Yeah, it’s pretty amazing-.”
Snowa, who was forcibly dragged into the Magical Girl Club (only accepting real magical girls), was initially terrified. Naturally, she was. What looked like a harmless otaku girl was, in fact, an Evil Magical Girl standing right in front of her.
After smashing the bones of dozens of magical girls, this maniac was babbling about how her training wasn’t up to par—totally deranged.
And now, wasn’t she the chairperson of the World Enemy controlling the world’s foe? It was impossible not to be scared of such a person.
However, Snowa was smarter than she appeared, and soon enough, she realized Ayle’s true nature.
‘Who would believe it… that an Evil Magical Girl is actually…’
An Evil Magical Girl was, in fact, a regular magical girl otaku.
A total nerd struggling to make even a single proper friend.
Look at her now. Though she didn’t quite understand what was being said, couldn’t you see how excited she was just to keep muttering on like that? Snowa thought that if she wanted, she could easily take control of Ayle’s heart and play with her like a toy.
Of course, she wouldn’t do something like that to an Evil Magical Girl. Seriously—she was meant to eventually understand love and retire from being a magical girl, while Ayle seemed to act as if there were no such limitations. It was no good to be on the bad side of a monster who could be a magical girl for who knows how long.
“S-Snowa, is it?”
“Yes. What’s up?”
“I know it’s a bit late to ask this, but… are we, um, friends now?”
“Uh- well… what do you think?”
“Hiiieeeek….”
As Snowa smiled and delayed her reply, Ayle looked lost in thought, wondering if she had made a mistake. Snowa couldn’t help but wonder how such a girl could turn into such a maniac.
Noticing Ayle sneaking glances at her, Snowa realized it was about time to give her an answer. If she dragged this out any longer, Ayle might catch on…
“Of course we’re friends. We’re in the same club now.”
“Th-then—! Is it okay if I call you Snowa…?”
“Sure. Ayle.”
“…S-Snowa!”
Watching Ayle beam like a little child, Snowa felt her resentment gradually melting away. Who would have thought she’d become friends with someone who broke her bones…?
That grudge? Maybe she could repay it by teasing Ayle a little while being friends. After all, she held all the cards, so there was nothing to worry about.
“Snowa, what’s your schedule like tomorrow…?”
“We have classes, right?”
“If it’s okay with you, can we eat together tomorrow?”
“Sure! Oh, how about my friends join us?”
“C-Could it really be friends of friends…?”
Hehehe—Seeing Ayle make silly laughter, Snowa smiled lightly when suddenly someone walked into the club room. A young man in a white coat wearing glasses. He seemed too young to be a professor, maybe a teaching assistant or staff… but definitely not a magical girl. So, he probably wasn’t here to join the club either. Then again, it wouldn’t be impossible for him to come thinking it was only girls.
“Ayle! You in here?”
“Ah! Scientist! What brings you here?”
“I told you to call me Professor here, right? Nothing much, just thought I’d check if you got the club room okay… oh, there’s someone here? Hi there!”
“Y-Yes… hello?”
“I didn’t expect to see anyone else, but I’m Eight, the supervising professor of this club. New student, huh?”
“Yup… I’m Snowa, a first-year psychology major.”
“Great, great. Nice to meet you. Let’s take care of Ayle too, okay?”
Suddenly, Eight, having made his appearance, smiled and left the club room, probably tired of hanging out in a room full of girls.
Listening to Eight’s footsteps fade away, Snowa cautiously spoke.
“Hey, Ayle? Who was that…?”
“O-Our professor.”
“How’d you get to know him?”
“Ah, um, well…”
Hearing Snowa’s question, Ayle scratched her cheek awkwardly. Well, she was a magical girl, but was it even okay to reveal Eight’s true identity to a person like her?
After all, it was supposed to be a secret that Eight was an Evil Scientist. Sure, there were vague bits of information floating around online, but detailed personal information was classified. Even after winning the ABC Award, only a tiny handful of people knew he was an Evil Scientist.
“Oh, I met him while working part-time by chance…”
“Part-time? What job lets you get close to a professor…?”
“But more importantly—why’s that? Is something wrong?”
“Hmm? Just thought it’d be handy to have a professor or two knowing you as a college student?”
“Ah, I see… that makes sense…”
Seeing Snowa speak so casually, Ayle felt nothing odd about it. It all seemed logical. Knowing a professor as a college student could be quite helpful. After all, she was receiving various help herself.
But Snowa’s barrage of questions didn’t end there.
“How did he become a professor at such a young age? Or maybe he just looks young—he’s actually older than he seems…?”
“He’s young. The professor is.”
“Huh? How do you know?”
“You don’t know…? The professor won the ABC Award recently and was even on the news…”
“I don’t really care about the news.”
Upon hearing this, Ayle nodded as if she understood. After all, the excitement around Eight winning the ABC Award was mostly local to City E. Everyone in Ayle’s circle couldn’t even name one past ABC winner, while magical girl names were forever stuck in memory—even the not-so-popular ones.
And while Snowa seemed so ordinary now, she had only been a high school girl until last year, with a uniquely remarkable debut as a magical girl.
“By the way, being young… that’s nice…”
“Uh, huh?”
“Ayle? You said you were close with Professor Eight, right?”
“Uhm… yeah?”
“Awesome! So can we have lunch with the professor tomorrow?”
“S-Suddenly? I don’t think he’d be that keen on it…”
Ayle said that, but she couldn’t say no to her first-ever friend’s request. She fumbled to take out her smartphone and sent a message to Eight, surprised when he accepted so easily.
After confirming the lunch plan, Snowa couldn’t help but start grinning ear to ear. Watching her, something stirred in Ayle’s heart.
‘Uh, uh oh—why do I feel this way…?’
While Ayle was flustered over her unexpected feelings, Snowa was mentally grinning while recalling Eight’s face earlier.
‘Could it be, there actually is someone like that…?’
Having always been a beauty and the darling of magical girl fans, Snowa had a clear dream. It was to accidentally meet a guy who was better than her and fall in love like a Cinderella romance.
It had never happened as finding a guy surpassing her looks and style was a near-impossible dream—yet at this moment, Snowa felt she could meet someone who perfectly matched her ideal type.
From what she heard, they didn’t seem to be too far apart in age… and with that kind of appearance and ability, even a ten-year gap wouldn’t matter that much.
“Alright, Ayle. Let’s head back now? It doesn’t look like anyone else is coming.”
“Uh, okay…?”
Watching Snowa rise to leave for home, Ayle awkwardly stood up to follow. Well, what big deal could come from introducing a friend? With that on her mind…
But the next day,
Ayle realized her fears were not unfounded.
“Really—? You’re amazing, Professor!”
“Hmm, is that so? I think Snowa here is more amazing though. How can you balance being a magical girl and your studies…?”
“This much is what everyone does, right? A-Ah, it’s nothing.”
Snowa settled right next to Eight, starting to lean in a bit too close. Covering her mouth as if to hide her smile, she lightly tapped his arm every time she spoke…
Despite being a loner throughout her school years and not developing any communication skills, Ayle was still a girl. She realized instinctively that her behavior was rather flirty.
‘T-That… that little fox…!’
Realizing that her first-ever friend was a cunning vixen that could drain someone’s essence, Ayle was furious.
