chapter 9
“It’s futile.”
I sighed as I greeted the training class on Monday morning.
Maybe it was because the facilities at the training center were so great?
The weekend of playing this and that passed in an instant.
“Oh, you came first.”
Dayoung Kim approached with a familiar voice.
His face flushed a little, probably because he did physical training every morning.
And, perhaps because he hung out with her and Lee Hyeon-seok for a short time over the weekend, he was much more friendly than last week.
After waiting for a while, other trainees, including Lee Hyeon-seok, arrived in the classroom one after another.
However, the atmosphere was not so bright.
It was because of the other trainees who were coming in today.
“Was it today that the criminals were coming?”
“Well, is there anything special?”
“It’s class B. Even so, class C is a bit…”
Dayoung Kim spoke in a tone full of worries.
I said don’t worry too much.
Lee Hyeon-seok, who was with him, didn’t even reply with a stiff face.
At that time, Lee Soo-yeon appeared on the podium.
“Nice to meet you, students. Did you have a nice weekend?”
After the formal greeting, she first informed me of a few small details.
And at the end, the topic we want to know about came out.
“Lastly, the members of Class B and Class C will be entering soon. Any questions about this?”
Several people raised their hands as if they had waited for Lee Soo-yeon’s words.
“How many people are coming in?”
“Class B has 22 students and Class C has 13 students.”
“So many?”
“Are you going to be in control?”
More people than expected asked questions from all over the place.
To this, Lee Su-yeon responded plainly.
“of course. FYI, the members of Class B and C are not controlled in the same way as you. So it can create a somewhat heavy atmosphere.”
“What exactly do you mean by that?”
“For example… you can think of it like the military.”
At those words, some people showed subtle expressions on their faces.
It must mean that I don’t have very good memories in the army.
“And for class C, particularly strong controls can be put in place. They are criminals who only received a reprieve from the death penalty. So, I ask all of you in Class A to keep that in mind and not be too surprised.”
The voices of the trainees who had been expressing their concerns were heard.
It sounded like I shouldn’t be too surprised because if I just listened to it, I might beat you to death right in front of you.
But… is that really just words?
The look in Lee Su-yeon’s eyes as she said that was unusual.
“I will also introduce you to a new trainee who will be joining Class A right away.”
“Even in Class A?”
“There are some people who have experience in exorcism before entering our training center. This is obviously illegal, but there are a few exceptions. Especially if you are hired by a regular agency-”
Suyeon Lee continued with a brief explanation of the transfer students.
The conclusion was that they were already exorcists, and they entered the training center to obtain formal exorcist qualifications.
And such people said that the first week of training at the training center, which is basic education, is exempted.
“The announcement ends here. Then, let me introduce the transfer students first.”
When Suyeon Lee gestured, the teaching assistant left the classroom.
After a while, the assistant came back with a woman he had never seen before.
“I must be a foreigner!”
Dayoung Kim whispered with an interesting face.
As she said, the transfer student had a noticeable appearance in Korea.
It’s not enough to have blonde hair and wear a nun’s uniform.
So, the trainees looked at the transfer student with a curious gaze.
Having met a saint in a fantasy world, it wasn’t such a fresh sight for me.
“Then, transfer students, please introduce yourself.”
At Lee Soo-yeon’s words, the transfer student nodded.
And she opened her mouth with a very unwilling face.
“hello. This is the Monica of the Church. i look forward to.”
I heard clumsy Korean.
It seems that he has not lived in Korea for a long time.
Also, since she kept her expressionless the whole time, I could tell that she wasn’t a very sociable person.
“Monica recently came to Korea from Italy. I’m still not used to the atmosphere here, so please be considerate.”
Soo-yeon Lee helped out with a word, and in the meantime, Monica moved to her seat and sat down.
It was the back seat, where no one was around.
“Are you a real nun?”
one of the trainees asked.
Monica didn’t even think of answering with a sullen expression, so it was Lee Soo-yeon who opened her mouth again this time.
“I am not a nun. That is the uniform of an exorcist belonging to the church.”
“Are you from a church?”
“You will find out more soon. Rather…it’s lecture time.”
Lee Soo-yeon looked back at the assistant standing near the exit.
“Please let the members of Class B and C enter.”
After a while, dozens of people in blue prison uniforms entered the classroom.
Class A was in the middle of the classroom, which was divided into three large sections, and they headed to the left.
It was the seat of Class B, which is said to be a place where common criminals belong.
They moved under the control of five teaching assistants.
“Sit down in groups of four, starting from the front row according to the number.”
The assistants who gave orders in a hard voice were not unfamiliar faces.
They were the people who helped Suyeon Lee with the lecture last week.
Back then, they responded with a smile and seemed like kind officials.
But now, their attitude towards Class B has completely changed.
They watched class B with expressionless faces like heartless prison guards.
In addition, there was even a 3-stage bar held in his hand, which made him feel intimidated.
“·······”
Meanwhile, the members of Class B who were seated glanced at me.
But that’s all.
No one was able to talk or speak easily.
It was because of the assistants.
They couldn’t even look at us.
“number 3! Keep an eye on the front.”
Someone called by the number flinched and turned his head.
As Lee Soo-yeon said, it seemed that there was strict control.
And next was Class C, where the vicious criminals were gathered.
“in action! Sit in twos from the front!”
Class C entered with a ferocious roar.
Is it for distinction?
They were wearing gray prison uniforms, not the usual blue uniforms.
Besides, each hand was handcuffed.
In addition, the assistant escorting them could see not only a triple baton, but also a pistol on his waist.
The atmosphere went beyond strict and even bloody.
But maybe it’s because they’re vicious criminals who have nothing to lose?
The members of Class C were staring ahead with even more menacing eyes.
“wow···”
Maybe because she was fed up with this, Dayoung Kim said that.
The others also turned their heads away, as if they didn’t want to get involved any longer.
Just one person.
Lee Hyun-seok’s expression was a little strange.
His face was savagely distorted, and he was glaring at someone from Class C.
“Mr. Lee Hyeon-seok?”
When I called his name, Lee Hyun-seok looked away as if he had suddenly come to his senses.
But his distorted face was the same.
Is there even a Won Su-jin in Class C?
It was only natural that he had collected only the heinous criminals.
“Do you happen to know anyone?”
“···yes.”
Lee Hyun-seok spoke slowly.
“The cause of the fire in which my colleague died was deliberate arson. And I heard that the culprit was arrested shortly thereafter.”
“Certainly the culprit…”
At Dayoung Kim’s words, Lee Hyeonseok nodded.
“No, how could that be?”
“I have already received the word. The police said they wouldn’t bring me if I didn’t give them my permission, but I said I would. But seeing the face in real life makes me sick.”
“Why did you allow that?”
Dayoung Kim asked in a cautious voice.
“I thought this would be a punishment rather than rotting comfortably in prison.”
I couldn’t say anything else to Lee Hyeon-seok, who spoke calmly.
If he made that judgment, I wouldn’t have anything to say.
“You are all gathered. Then we will begin training.”
Just in time, Lee Soo-yeon started giving a lecture.
Lecture materials were displayed on a large screen behind her.
Class B and Class C were added, but she continued her lecture with the same attitude as last week.
“Today’s topic is a career in the exorcism industry. I hope you will listen carefully as this is an education about the workplace you will go to after completing the training institute.”
it’s a job
And it turns out, this training center itself is a place where exorcists are fostered.
I was told that after completing my education, I could become an exorcism cop, or join an authorized or private organization.
“First, the police.”
Lee Soo-yeon explained the police as a workplace.
Being a civil servant who is treated well, etc.
For the most part, it wasn’t much different from what Sophia had told me the first time.
“The police have priority over all exorcism cases. However, sometimes the police force alone can’t handle it. In this case, the police work with three accredited agencies recognized by the government. These accredited bodies are also your workplace choices.”
The page of lecture material turned over.
There are a total of three accredited organizations listed on the page.
It was the church, the courthouse, and the LB Academy.
Was the church that transfer student Monica belonged to over there?
“The first institution I would like to introduce to you is the church. As you know, the church is a Christian-affiliated institution and a global exorcism organization. Also, their exorcism has been practiced for a long time, especially in the Western world. To the place where the word exorcist came from-”
While listening to Suyeon Lee’s lecture, I suddenly realized something.
Lee Soo-yeon’s gaze had never left class A.
As if only Class A exists here.
“Their strength is their powerful sage. Churches that have continued the history of the Bible have many sacred items called holy relics.”
At that, I glanced at Monica.
Even though the story of the church is coming out, her armament, which is still making a sad expression, is not visible.
Didn’t you come with a god?
It was said that it was the pride of the church, so I thought I would take a look at it, but it turned out to be a pity.
“Next is the courthouse. If the church is a historical exorcism organization in the West, the Buddhist temple, a Buddhist institution, is a place that shares the history of the East.”
An explanation of the court followed.
Unlike the church, which is represented by strong sacred spirits, it is said that it is a place that emphasizes the training of individual exorcists, not sacred spirits.
If you don’t like the police, it won’t hurt to go to your religion.
I didn’t really have anything to say about religion.
So neither the church nor the court seemed to have much merit to me.
So, is there only one place left?
LB Academy.
It was a place where you couldn’t guess anything just by looking at the name.
“The third is LB Academy. The origins of this place are exorcists, or shamans, based on Korean folk beliefs. From a religious point of view, Taoism is the closest, but, like indigenous beliefs, many religions are complex—”
be a shaman
The desire to find out more disappeared at the word that seemed to dance on the knife, but an unexpected fact soon followed.
“The hallmark of LB Academy is its flexibility. For this reason, it is also the most modern among accredited institutions. In particular, recent attempts to introduce science and technology into the exorcism industry have been successful, and researchers are currently being recruited. For science-related majors, you can also apply for a research position.”
At the mention of a research job, some people’s eyes changed.
Especially Dayoung Kim who was next to me was like that.
After all, she doesn’t seem very good at fighting spirits.
It was enough motivation to prefer a research position.
“The description of accredited organizations ends here. And finally, there are extrinsic organs. A collective term for private organizations of exorcists who are licensed for exorcism activities other than regular government agencies. The treatment is not good compared to the government or authorized institutions, but based on a free spirit-”
The treatment is not good, but it is free.
It was not a very attractive condition.
In the end, overall, the police feel like civil servants, accredited agencies as large corporations, and foreign organizations as small and medium-sized enterprises.
If so, then… is there only one way for me to go?
“I would also like the police.”
There was no particular condition that stood out, so there was no reason to refuse to be a civil servant who receives a salary from a large company.
While I was deciding my career path, Suyeon Lee’s lecture continued.
“This is the job you can choose after completing the training institute. Next, we will tell you about the conditions that are suitable for each job place.”
