The Fire We Feed

Chapter 21: Chapter 21 - The Lair’s Last Breath

The lair felt like it was holding its breath. Shadows clung to the walls, and the stale air weighed heavily around them. Taryn's boots scraped over loose bones as she moved deeper into the cave, every step echoing with the haunting stillness that only death could leave behind.

"There." Lucien's voice was low, but it echoed off the walls like a warning.

Taryn followed his gaze to a small, jagged altar carved into the far wall. At its center lay the relic—a dark, weathered artifact pulsing faintly with magic, ancient runes swirling across its surface. Its glow cast faint tendrils of light, illuminating the grim space around it.

Taryn stepped closer, ignoring the knot tightening in her chest. It should have felt like victory, but all she could feel was exhaustion gnawing at her bones—and the heavy ache of betrayal that sat between her and Lucien like a silent specter.

"You were going to kill me over that?" Her voice was flat, emotionless. She forced herself not to look at him, focusing instead on the relic as if it were the only thing that mattered.

Lucien didn't answer. His silence spoke volumes.

Taryn's fingers hovered over the relic, the magic humming beneath her skin like an unspoken threat. Before she could lift it from the altar, a low, familiar growl rumbled through the cave.

Her heart lurched.

The beast was back.

It moved fast—too fast. A blur of rage and claws, lunging from the shadows with a roar that shook the very walls of the lair.

"Get down!" Lucien shouted, shoving Taryn aside as the creature's claws raked through the air where she had stood.

They hit the ground hard, rolling in opposite directions. Taryn's sword scraped against stone as she scrambled to her feet. The beast whirled around, its glowing eyes locked onto them, maddened by blood loss but driven by a desperate need to kill.

Taryn's body protested every movement, exhaustion dragging at her limbs, but she gritted her teeth and stood her ground. The chain may have been broken, but the weight of survival pressed down heavier than ever. She gripped her sword tighter, ignoring the tremor in her hands.

The beast lashed out with brutal speed, and claws grazed her arm, sharp and searing. Taryn stumbled, biting back a cry as blood dripped from the fresh wound.

Lucien surged forward, slashing at the creature's legs to divert its attention. His blade sliced deep, but the beast didn't slow—it swung wildly, catching Lucien's shoulder and sending him crashing to the ground.

"Get up!" Taryn shouted, her heart lurching as she saw the monster coil for another strike.

Lucien rolled to his feet just in time, teeth gritted as he threw himself back into the fight. The beast lunged again, and they moved together—two predators locked in desperate battle with a creature that refused to die.

Taryn drove her sword into the monster's ribs, the blade scraping against bone, but the beast twisted violently, knocking her back. Her head hit the stone wall with a sickening thud, stars exploding behind her eyes.

She tasted blood in her mouth and forced herself upright, muscles screaming in protest. The beast turned toward her, snarling. Lucien charged first, his blade flashing in the dim light as he struck at the beast's side. The monster howled, slashing back with claws like knives. Lucien dodged to the side, but not fast enough—the creature's claws raked across his arm, drawing blood.

Taryn didn't hesitate.

With a fierce cry, she threw herself between Lucien and the beast, driving her sword deep into the creature's ribs. The blade hit bone with a sickening crunch, and blood poured from the wound, steaming against the cold air. But the beast was relentless. It swung its massive head toward Taryn, jaws snapping inches from her face. She ducked and slashed upward, the tip of her sword slicing across the beast's muzzle, but it was like cutting through stone—the monster barely seemed to notice.

It reared up on its hind legs, towering over her, claws flashing in the dim light. Before she could react, the beast brought its full weight down. Taryn raised her sword to block, but the impact was devastating. The force sent her flying backward, her back slamming into the jagged cave wall. Pain exploded along her spine, and the world tilted violently.

Her sword clattered from her hand as she crumpled to the ground, gasping for air.

The beast pounced, claws tearing through the space between them, its glowing eyes locked onto her with deadly intent. Taryn rolled desperately to the side, but her limbs felt sluggish, weighed down by exhaustion and pain. She knew she wouldn't be able to dodge another strike like that.

Lucien roared and threw himself at the beast, his blade plunging deep into the monster's back. The creature howled, thrashing wildly. Its claws swiped at Lucien, tearing through his arm with a sickening rip of flesh. Blood poured from the wound, splattering across the floor, but Lucien didn't back down.

"Die already, damn you!" he growled, gritting his teeth against the pain as he drove the blade deeper.

Taryn fought to stand, her vision swimming. Every muscle in her body screamed in protest, but she couldn't stop—not now. With a feral cry, she grabbed a fallen dagger from the ground and threw herself at the beast's exposed side. She slammed the dagger into its chest, twisting hard.

The beast roared in agony, the sound reverberating through the cave like thunder. It lashed out blindly, catching Taryn with its claws. Pain erupted in her side as the claws tore through her flesh, ripping deep.

She gasped, the air leaving her lungs in a sharp, agonizing burst. The world tilted as she staggered, her vision blurring at the edges. Blood soaked through her ripped clothes, warm and wet, and the ground seemed to shift beneath her feet.

"Taryn!" Lucien's voice cut through the haze, sharp and desperate.

The beast turned toward her, eyes gleaming with murderous intent, ready to strike the killing blow. But before it could, Lucien surged forward, slamming his blade into the creature's throat with all the strength he had left.

The steel bit deep, slicing through muscle and sinew. The beast staggered, its massive body shuddering as blood gushed from the wound. With one final, strangled snarl, it collapsed to the ground, twitching once before going still.

Lucien ripped his blade free, his chest heaving with ragged breaths.

The silence that followed was deafening.
