chapter 5
5. Computer Research Society (1)
“Are you a member of the Computer Research Club?”
Jin-taek turned around when he heard someone calling him.
Hoyoung stood behind him.
“who···?”
Hoyoung handed the flyer he was holding to Jintaek and said.
“Seeing that it’s attached to the first floor of the student union building, I want to ask you something. Are you still recruiting for clubs?”
The leaflet was a guide to recruiting new club members of the Computer Research Society.
“I should have picked all the new members this year. Are they still attached?”
“Yes. How many more were attached?”
“Really? Where’s the department? Newbie?”
“I’m in the Department of Law, and I’m in the class of ’88.”
Jin-taek looked at Ho-yeong with a slightly surprised look at Ho-young’s words.
“Law department? You came here knowing what we were doing, right?”
Jin-taek’s surprise was natural.
Aside from the fact that the Department of Law is a liberal arts department and the Computer Research Club is a science-related club, it was not uncommon for students in the Department of Law to not join the club because they were preparing for the bar exam.
“Yes. I know it’s a club that handles computers and makes software.”
“Do you know how to program?”
“I’ve been interested in it since I was young, so I know how to deal with C.”
“okay?”
Hearing that he knows how to handle programming, Jin-taek became interested in Ho-yeong.
At that time, many people in Korea did not even know the existence of computers.
In this day and age, meeting someone who knows how to program was like picking stars from the sky.
“Then, shall we go to the club room and talk?”
“good.”
Jin-taek took the lead and went to the club room, and Ho-young followed.
For some reason, Hoyeong felt new.
It was because in my previous life, it was a building I had never entered during the four years of school.
From the inside of the unfamiliar building, I felt that this life was definitely different from the last one.
“Here. Come in.”
Even though it was close to evening, there were a few more people in the club room.
Everyone was sitting in front of their computers with dark circles stretched out.
“He just came in… Huh? Who?”
“I’m aspiring to join. A freshman in the class of ’88.”
“Newbie?”
The chubby-looking man adjusted his glasses and looked at Hoyeong.
But it’s only a matter of time to be interested.
He looked at the computer monitor nonchalantly again and said.
“I’m sorry, but what should I do? Originally, I should interview applicants for the position, but I’m so busy right now… First of all, would you like to write a letter of application and talk to Jintaek?”
Hoyoung’s eyes sparkled as she looked at him.
That man’s name is Lee Jin-chan.
Lee Jin-chan is also a figure who will later become an axis of the Korean IT industry.
In the future, he is a person who shows off his talents in many ways by marrying a famous actor and even living a life as a politician.
In the distant future, Kim Jin-taek is more highly regarded due to his great success, but until the mid- to late 90s, Lee Jin-chan was famous as a computer genius.
“Come and sit down. You said you’re a freshman, can I talk to you?”
“Please speak comfortably, senior.”
Jintaek pointed to the other side of the sofa in the corner and said.
“Now…then what programming language can you use as your main focus?”
Hearing Jin-taek’s question, Ho-young endured the fact that he almost laughed a little.
Jintaek kindly told Hoyoung that it was a ‘programming language’.
He seemed to think that Hoyoung was a beginner who did not know much about programming.
“Of course, C language is the most basic, and I know how to handle Pascal, C++, and Objective C.”
Hoyeong learned more languages, but could no longer speak them.
This is because Python, Visual Basic, Java, JavaScript, C#, etc. are all languages released after the 1990s.
Normally, programmers don’t need to learn so many languages, but it came naturally to Hoyoung, whose only hobby was learning new languages.
Meanwhile, Jin-taek, who heard Ho-young’s words, was quite surprised.
When I heard that I knew how to handle it because I was just interested, it was because I thought I had just opened a book or two and knew only really basic grammar.
However, from Hoyeong’s words, he thought that it would not be just an introductory level.
“Then, is there a program you want to make?”
From Jin-taek’s mouth, the question he wanted Ho-young to ask the most came out right away.
Hoyeong put a smile on her lips and spoke a little louder.
“I want to make a Korean-style word processor.”
Jintaek’s eyes shook at Hoyoung’s words.
Because he said it out loud on purpose, the other club members who were working on the computer looked at Hoyoung over the monitor.
In particular, Lee Jin-chan, who had regarded Ho-young as a nuisance because he was busy, looked at Ho-young with eyes full of interest.
“Korean word processor?”
“Yes. Currently, Microsoft’s Word is already leading the global market. But the current Word does not match our Korean language.”
Lee Jin-chan, who had heard the story so far, got up from his seat and listened to Ho-young.
Hoyoung continued.
“The alphabets used in English and Europe are single-byte characters. However, Korean Hangul is a complex character that uses two bytes per character. Therefore, words tailored to English cannot digest Hangul properly. However, Microsoft won’t update to fully accommodate even double-byte characters for the little country of the East, Korea, so I want to make a word processor that fits our language.”
At Hoyeong’s words, Kim Jin-taek and Lee Jin-chan nodded involuntarily.
What Hoyoung just said was a dream that all the members of the computer research club were dreaming of together.
However, there is something that Hoyoung did not say.
In the future, Microsoft aggressively targets the double-byte character market.
Korean is also a double-byte character, but Chinese and Japanese are also double-byte characters.
However, for several years, there was no way for Kim Jin-taek and Lee Jin-chan to know what would happen in the future.
“And the game.”
This time, Kim Jin-taek’s eyes twinkled.
“I think the game market will develop rapidly in the future. I think games are the essence of programming. And I think that music, art, story, and technology are all combined together as a comprehensive art.”
At this one word, Kim Jin-taek even showed a slightly moved expression.
It has to be.
What Hoyoung just said was what Jintaek Kim, who became a billionaire ten years later, said with his own mouth.
‘It seems that he had a lot of interest in games from this point on.’
Hoyeong laughed inwardly and looked at the reaction of the club members.
Suddenly, everyone stopped what they were doing and listened attentively to Hoyeong.
In particular, Lee Jin-chan actively sang Ho-yeong.
“Junior. Then, shall we take a look at your skills? Do you want to come and see this?”
Hoyoung obediently sat down at the seat Jinchan guided.
When I sat down and looked at the monitor in front of me, I could see codes someone had coded.
And naturally, I started looking at the codes carefully.
‘Can I show this important thing to anyone?’
Hoyoung tried not to show his shock when he saw the contents of the thick CRT monitor.
It was because Hoyoung’s common sense did not understand that releasing the original source that had not even been released.
‘Even considering that the concept of copyright itself was ambiguous at this time…Look at this guy?’
Then, Hoyeong saw Lee Jinchan’s face.
Lee Jin-chan was full of laughter, wondering what was so funny.
Hoyoung intuitively realized.
That Jinchan Lee sat here thinking that he would not be able to interpret the code anyway.
“This is the part that handles the GUI (Graphical User Interface), and I think I’ve completed everything, but it doesn’t compile? Can you tell me why?”
Hoyoung kept a sneer inside.
Lee Jin-chan was trying to test himself now.
However, no matter how famous Lee Jin-chan is as a computer genius, he was, after all, a developer at the level of a college student in the past.
In Hoyoung’s eyes, Lee Jinchan’s code couldn’t help but look like child’s play.
“Can I take a look?”
“Yes, yes. Because I have a lot of time.”
Ho-yeong got a bad temper with Lee Jin-chan’s attitude.
So, I took off my coat and folded it to one side and started to focus on Lee Jin-chan’s code.
‘uh? It’s strange here…?’
A normal person would have had a hard time finding out if there was an error.
Even people who are good at programming spend a lot of time interpreting code written by others.
However, in Hoyoung’s eyes, it was as natural as finding a typo in a novel written in Korean.
furthermore.
‘Fix this part like this, that part like this… Here, an error will occur because the address value is specified incorrectly. Are you tired? Such a basic mistake… Okay, I can fix it like this.’
Hoyoung did not know how much time was passing, and he was busy debugging.
When an error occurs in a computer, it is called a bug, and the task of finding and fixing the error is called debugging.
This was named because in the early days of vacuum tubes in computers, whenever bugs stuck to vacuum tubes and were electrocuted, the computer caused an error, and the action of removing the body of the bug to make the computer work again.
“It’s done.”
About an hour since I started debugging.
Hoyoung corrected all the errors in the code Jinchan Lee was making.
Not only did I make some modifications, but I also made it look better and prettier.
But no answer came.
Lee Jin-chan was already dozing off on the side of the sofa.
The rest of the club was also concentrating on programming on their computers.
Ho-young thought about waking Lee Jin-chan, who was sleeping, but soon changed his mind.
“I’ll just go in today.”
At Hoyoung’s words, Kim Jin-taek, who was sitting in front of the computer, took Hoyoung to the door and said,
“Our seniors are a bit naughty, right? It’s because we don’t have enough time because of the project we’re doing. At this point, we can’t have a freshman who doesn’t know anything on the team…”
“I understand what you mean.”
“Thank you for understanding. If you want to join our club, would you like to come next time during the day? I’ll have a good talk with the other club members.”
“thank you.”
Hoyoung left the computer research club room without regret.
And after a while, Lee Jin-chan, who had been dozing off, woke up.
“Khaam! What is it? Did you go to the newbie’s house? How sleepy have I been?”
“An hour, senior. The law student just returned.”
“Oh. But did you go back after holding out for an hour? Should I say that I have grit or not?”
Jin-chan stretched while Ho-yeong sat down on the chair and stared at the monitor.
And soon, the flagship shouted.
“Hut!”
Lee Jin-chan couldn’t take his eyes off the monitor Ho-yeong was debugging.
It was because of the code that was completely changed in just one hour.
“Uh… how?”
In fact, Hoyoung did not have to do this.
If I just fixed one or two really fatal errors, the program would appear to be running fine.
However, he showed a performance because he thought that he had to take the initiative.
“You… Do you want to come and see this?”
At Lee Jin-chan’s words, the rest of the club members all approached Lee Jin-chan’s seat.
“Wow, how can the code be this neat? It reads like a book.”
“What did you think of this algorithm? Great?”
“Is this really just a correction of what I wrote? It’s a completely different code!”
Everyone let out a word of admiration.
Suddenly, Lee Jin-chan realized that he had forgotten the most important thing.
“Where did the freshman go? Who did you see?”
“Did you leave right before you woke up?”
“Have you gone? Look how far you’ve gone. Go out quickly and bring them to me!”
.
.
.
“Would you like to see it by now?”
From a distance away from the student center, Hoyoung looked at the student center.
It was less than eight o’clock, but there were few rooms with lights on.
Hoyeong deliberately did not give her name.
What the computer research club really needs is Ho-yeong himself, but he had to find himself in the computer research club.
“Gaia, if this is enough, those people must have recognized who is the top one, right?”
“There is a probability of 88.82% that the master will take the initiative in this relationship.”
Gaia’s answer gave Hoyoung a satisfied face as she headed for the boarding house.
