The Grim Fate of Those Who Arouse the Wrath of the Most Dreaded Marquis

Chapter 102

Chapter 102: The King’s Wrath is Fierce Yet Silent

“You’ve done well.”

This was King Alzeis’s first remark after reading Lord Giorg’s report. Being praised by his revered lord, Giorg couldn’t help but feel pleased.

Giorg responded with a quiet bow, acknowledging Alzeis’s words.

“By the way, Duke Zarfing.”

“Yes.”

At Alzeis’s call, Giorg replied succinctly and raised his head.

“Among the cardinals other than Sainhal, who do you think is the most troublesome?”

“Are you referring to the three chosen by Lord Hawkins?”

The three Giorg mentioned were the cardinals selected by Lord Hawkins.

“No, aside from those three. I believe it’s Reiva Fargat.”

(As expected of His Majesty… Fargat is from the Pope’s faction… and Sainhal’s greatest political rival.)

Giorg inwardly marveled at the name Alzeis brought up. He too had considered Reiva Fargat as the most suitable target to strike a blow against the Rizerutus Church.

“I agree with that assessment.”

“Hmm, because of his affiliation with the Pope. We don’t want the Pope’s faction to gain more power by eliminating Sainhal. Moreover, it’s unlikely the Pope would hand over these three to us.”

“Understood.”

Giorg’s response was brief. He already understood what kind of orders Alzeis would issue at this stage.

“Your Majesty, may I ask something?”

“Go ahead.”

“Thank you. You mentioned you have no intention of destroying the core, is that correct?”

“It’s fine. You’ve already done more than I instructed. My statement about not destroying the core isn’t a lie. Even if we eliminate the current Pope and cardinals, the core remains intact.”

“Understood.”

Giorg noticed the clear displeasure in Alzeis’s words. It was rare for Alzeis to show such irritation.

Seeing Giorg’s reaction, Alzeis seemed to realize that his tone had betrayed his frustration, and he smiled wryly.

“Curious?”

“My apologies.”

Giorg apologized for inadvertently probing into Alzeis’s feelings, prompted by the king’s bitter smile.

“No, it’s fine. No need to apologize.”

“Understood.”

“Tell me, Duke Zarfing, do you believe in God?”

“No, I do not.”

Giorg answered immediately. He didn’t believe in God. The important point wasn’t whether God existed, but whether God was trustworthy—and Giorg’s answer was a clear no.

To Giorg, God was useless. If God were truly compassionate and capable of saving the world, why was it still filled with endless tragedy? The answer was simple: God wasn’t a savior of humanity. That was the conclusion Giorg had reached in his life.

“Hah, given your life, that’s only natural.”

“I’m honored.”

“I believe God exists. But for those who rule this world, God is unnecessary.”

“…”

Giorg fell silent at Alzeis’s words. But his silence wasn’t one of disagreement—it was a sign that he wanted to hear more. Sensing this, Alzeis continued.

“This world is built on reality. Money, labor, talent, time, technology, geography, climate… We govern by considering these real factors.”

“That is true.”

“I don’t intend to deny the people’s devotion to God and their prayers. Practically speaking, it brings peace to their hearts and stabilizes society. That’s a reality rulers cannot ignore.”

“Yes.”

“But God’s role ends there. God’s will should not influence decisions beyond that. God doesn’t know how to solve the problems of this real world, and thus only spreads misfortune.”

“…”

“That’s how God is. Naturally, the Rizerutus Church, which claims to speak for God, is equally useless in solving real-world problems.”

Alzeis’s words were a clear rejection of the Church. His tone carried the resolve of someone who bore the weight of reality.

To Alzeis, the Church’s members were ultimately irresponsible individuals whose words held no persuasive power.

“Sainhal brazenly spread poison in the real world. His reason? He wanted the position of Pope, the so-called ‘head janitor.'”

“Janitor…?”

Giorg couldn’t help but ask about the term “janitor.” He couldn’t quite grasp Alzeis’s meaning.

“Considering the Church’s role, I believe that’s the most fitting title. The Church’s duty is to provide a place for believers to pray to God. And to keep that place clean.”

“So, janitors…”

“The Pope, cardinals, archbishops… lofty titles, but to me, they’re just janitors. I don’t know if the Pope is aware that Sainhal has been spreading poison in Galvate. But he should know. And yet, the Pope hasn’t corrected the mistakes of his subordinates… A failure as a janitor, don’t you think?”

“Yes.”

“With such failures in charge, how can they keep the place of prayer clean? That’s why it doesn’t matter if the Pope or cardinals disappear.”

“Understood.”

Giorg bowed and responded to Alzeis’s words.

“I misunderstood Your Majesty’s statement about not destroying the core. It seems I was still too naive.”

“As I said earlier, you’ve already done more than I instructed. Now, I have a new order for you.”

“Anything.”

“Eliminate Cardinal Reiva Fargat. I trust you understand the reason without explanation?”

“Of course. Leave it to me.”

Giorg’s cold voice echoed.
