The Last Stand After The Fall

Chapter 7: Chapter 7: The Red Moon

The vehicle lurched forward, its massive wheels crunching over rocks and debris. Isla kept firing from the turret, picking off Reclaimers that dared to pursue.

"We've got more incoming—two Fangs, west side!" Isla shouted.

"Hold them off!" Leon barked, gripping the handrail for balance as the vehicle jolted over a fissure.

"Damn things are fast," Kane muttered, peering out of a reinforced slit in the side.

"Fangs always are," J replied, her hand on the hilt of her blade, just in case.

Isla didn't wait for permission. She fired again, the turret's rounds punching through one Fang's chest and sending it sprawling to the ground. The second was more persistent, darting between rocks and closing in fast.

"I can't get a clear shot!" Isla yelled.

"Hang tight!" Darius growled, gripping the wheel tightly. He swerved sharply, using the vehicle's massive bulk to crush the Fang under the rear wheels with a sickening crunch.

"Got it!" Isla called, exhaling sharply.

Leon glanced at his wrist monitor. "Two clicks to the gate. Keep them off us!"

The hum of the Spire grew louder as the moon rose higher, the crimson light reflecting off the jagged terrain. More Reclaimers began to emerge, drawn by the noise and motion.

"Damn it, they're everywhere!" Cole shouted, firing his rifle through a side port.

"Almost there!" Darius yelled, the Citadel's massive south gate now visible in the distance.

At the Citadel, the gates began to open, revealing a narrow corridor lit by powerful floodlights. Vanguard soldiers lined the walls, their weapons trained on the approaching horde.

"Rescue team, you've got a clear path!" a voice crackled over the comms. "Get inside, now!"

Leon leaned forward. "Punch it, Darius!"

The vehicle surged ahead, barreling through a group of smaller Reclaimers that had swarmed the path. Bullets and artillery fire from the walls rained down, cutting down the creatures as the vehicle roared into the safety of the Citadel.

The gates slammed shut behind them, sealing out the chaos just as the first wave of Reclaimers reached the perimeter.

Inside, J's group sat in stunned silence, catching their breath as Leon turned to them. "Welcome to the Citadel. You made it just in time."

The red moon hung high in the sky, its ominous glow casting the entire battlefield in shades of crimson. The hum from the Spire grew louder, resonating in the bones of every soldier and survivor within the Citadel.

It wasn't just noise—it was a call to war. From the vast cracks in the earth, the Reclaimers surged forth in terrifying numbers. They came with purpose, as though the Spire itself whispered the location of the Citadel to them.

Monarchs towered above the horde, their massive, grotesque forms directing the chaos. Brutes charged forward like living battering rams, their thunderous footsteps shaking the ground.

Screamers screeched into the night, their cries threatening to shatter the nerves of even the most seasoned soldiers. Runners sprinted ahead with blinding speed, their clawed limbs cutting through anything in their path.

Fangs prowled on all fours, leaping from shadow to shadow with terrifying precision. It was an unrelenting tide, and the Citadel was their target.

Ash and Lilith stood frozen, their faces pale with fear. For their very first night inside the Citadel, they were thrust into humanity's darkest hour.

"Take these two to safety!" J commanded, her voice cutting through the chaos.

She grabbed a Vanguard soldier by the arm and pushed the siblings toward him.

"Kane, you're with me! Let's move!"

Kane nodded, his expression grim but determined. Despite the exhaustion from their journey through the streets, neither he nor J hesitated as they sprinted toward the walls to join the fight.

On the command tower, Commander Voss stood tall, her sharp eyes scanning the battlefield. Her voice rang out over the comms, firm and commanding.

"Focus fire on the Brutes! Do not let them reach the wall!" she ordered.

"Snipers, take out the Screamers before they stun the front line. South wall, report in! Are the turrets holding?"

Her orders were met with a chorus of "Yes, Commander!" as the Vanguard mobilized.

The turrets on the walls roared to life, unleashing torrents of laser fire and explosive rounds. Brutes were torn apart in fiery blasts, and Runners were shredded by concentrated volleys.

Despite the relentless attacks, the Reclaimers kept coming. Their dark blood painted the battlefield, but the horde showed no signs of stopping.

On the south wall, a lone Screamer managed to break through the defensive fire and leapt onto one of the automated turrets. With a bone-chilling roar, it let out a deafening scream that echoed through the Citadel.

"RREEAAAAAARGH!"

The sound was paralyzing. Soldiers froze, clutching their heads as the noise rattled their skulls. It only lasted a few seconds, but it was enough.

Runners took advantage of the opening, scaling the wall with horrifying agility. Their claws dug into the concrete as they climbed, and within moments, they were over the top. The south wall descended into chaos.

"Dammit! They're on the wall!" shouted a soldier, firing his rifle desperately at the oncoming Runners.

"They're tearing us apart!" another cried, swinging his blade as a Runner leapt at him, claws outstretched.

Screams filled the air as the Runners tore into the Vanguard. Blood sprayed across the wall as soldiers were dragged down, their combat suits shredded by razor-sharp claws.

"NOOOO!" one soldier screamed as a Runner ripped into his chest.

"Shit! My hand—my hand! It tore my hand off!" another shouted, clutching the bloody stump of his arm.

The air was thick with the sounds of agony—breaking bones, tearing flesh, and the horrifying growls of the Reclaimers.

Inside the command center, the CCTV screens lit up with red alerts.

"The south wall is breached! Runners have made it over the top!" a worker shouted.

Commander Voss's jaw tightened.

"Dammit! Every available soldier, get to the south wall now!" she barked.

"We cannot let them take the Citadel!"

"Those bastards!"

J roared as she sprinted toward the south wall, the power of her Aegis suit propelling her forward. Using its enhanced strength, she vaulted over buildings, her boots hitting the rooftops with sharp thuds. Kane and the rescue squad followed close behind, their weapons at the ready. J's voice crackled over the comms.

"We need to move fast. Kill everything that's gotten through. No mercy!"

The scene at the south wall was a bloodbath. Vanguard soldiers lay scattered across the ground, their bodies mangled by razor-sharp claws. The smell of blood and burnt flesh hung thick in the air.

The automated turrets, designed to mow down Reclaimers before they breached the wall, were malfunctioning, their sensors disrupted by the Screamer's piercing wail. Several runners and Fangs had already made it through, their numbers growing with every passing second.

The south wall, though fortified with more automated turrets, EMP launchers, and laser cannons, had been manned by fewer experienced soldiers. Without the veterans to hold the line, chaos had erupted.

Now the few remaining Vanguard were overwhelmed, their eyes wide with fear as the Reclaimers tore through their ranks.

J and her team reached the scene, stopping for a moment to take it in. Kane cursed under his breath, gripping his rifle tighter.

"This is worse than I thought," he muttered.

J didn't waste time. She activated the energy blade on her gauntlet, the glowing weapon humming to life.

"Focus up. Take down every Runner and Fang in sight. And someone kill that Screamer before it disables anything else!"
