Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Mallory's Apartment Strikes Back
After the chaos with Tiffany and Chad, life settled into its usual odd rhythm at Mallory's ever-evolving apartment. The fridge still delivered gourmet meals at random intervals, Blinky was slowly learning not to destroy furniture, and Greg had declared Thursdays "board game night."
But just as Mallory was starting to believe in this temporary peace, the apartment's tablet displayed a new alert:
Incoming: Unexpected Event. Prepare for Impact.
Mallory stared at the screen, groaning. "Can't I have one boring day?"
Greg peered over her shoulder. "What kind of 'impact' are we talking about? Like, emotionally? Or is the ceiling about to collapse?"
Before Mallory could respond, the apartment rumbled, and the lights flickered. A loud whirring sound echoed through the halls, followed by an unmistakable ding!
"What now?" Alex asked, standing cautiously in the doorway.
The tablet beeped again, flashing a message:
New Feature Unlocked: Dimensional Elevator.
Mallory, Greg, and Alex stared as a portion of the wall shifted and transformed into a sleek, futuristic elevator. Its metallic doors gleamed, and a digital screen above them displayed the words: Welcome to the Multiverse Travel System.
"Uh… what?" Mallory said, still rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.
The apartment's automated voice chimed in, cheerful as ever: Congratulations, Mallory! Your apartment has reached Level 5. The Dimensional Elevator allows you to explore alternate realities, scavenge resources, and meet interesting characters!
Greg's eyes lit up. "Alternate realities? Does this mean we could, like, visit a world where the zombie apocalypse didn't happen?"
"Or," Alex added, "a world where you're not a hoarder?"
Greg scowled. "Low blow, dude."
Mallory, however, wasn't impressed. "Nope. Not interested. I have snacks, electricity, and a roof over my head. Why would I go wandering through random dimensions?"
The elevator doors slid open with a soft hiss. Inside, neon lights pulsed invitingly, and a sign displayed the words: Next Stop: Mystery Awaits.
---
Greg, naturally, was the first to step into the elevator. "Come on, Mallory! What's the worst that could happen? We could find supplies, meet new people, maybe even bring back cool tech!"
Mallory crossed her arms. "Or we could get eaten by interdimensional monsters."
Alex shrugged. "He's got a point, though. If the zombies outside ever stop their 'thriller' routine, we might need backup plans."
Mallory sighed. "Fine. But if I die, I'm haunting both of you."
---
The elevator ride was disorienting. Lights swirled around them, and the floor seemed to shift beneath their feet. When the doors finally opened, they stepped out into…
A candy-coated wonderland.
"Uh," Greg said, staring at the landscape of towering gumdrop trees and rivers of molten chocolate. "This is… not what I expected."
Blinky chirped excitedly and dove into the nearest marshmallow bush, emerging covered in pink fluff.
Mallory groaned. "Great. We found Willy Wonka's nightmare."
Before anyone could respond, a group of creatures emerged from behind a licorice fence. They looked like bipedal gummy bears, each one armed with a spear made of peppermint sticks.
"Halt!" the leader squeaked, its voice high-pitched and unnervingly cute. "Intruders must pay the toll!"
Greg leaned down to Mallory, whispering, "Is it bad that I want to eat them?"
---
Mallory held up her hands. "Look, we don't want any trouble. We're just… sightseeing."
The gummy bear leader tilted its head. "Sightseeing? In the Licorice Kingdom? Preposterous!"
Greg stepped forward, pulling a half-melted candy bar from his pocket. "What if we paid you in chocolate?"
The gummy bears gasped in unison, their tiny eyes sparkling with greed.
"Chocolate," the leader said reverently. "The forbidden treasure…"
"Forbidden?" Mallory asked, raising an eyebrow.
The leader puffed out its chest. "We are sworn to protect the sacred purity of candy! But… exceptions can be made."
Greg tossed the candy bar, and the gummy bears scrambled for it, descending into a chaotic pile.
Mallory sighed. "Well, that was easy."
---
As they wandered through the candy dimension, Mallory couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. Her suspicions were confirmed when Blinky suddenly started chirping and flapping its wings in alarm.
"What's wrong, buddy?" Mallory asked, turning just in time to see a massive shadow loom over them.
From the chocolate river emerged a monstrous creature made entirely of taffy, its gooey arms stretching toward them like sticky tentacles.
Greg screamed. "It's the Candy Kraken!"
"Run!" Alex shouted, grabbing Mallory's arm.
They sprinted back toward the elevator, dodging the Kraken's sticky attacks. Blinky dove into the elevator first, chirping furiously.
"Close the doors!" Greg yelled.
The elevator complied, shutting just as the Kraken's gooey arm slapped against the metal.
---
Panting, Mallory slumped against the wall. "Okay. No more candy dimensions."
Greg, still catching his breath, grinned. "But you have to admit, it was kind of awesome."
Mallory glared at him. "Awesome? We almost got eaten by sentient taffy!"
Alex chuckled. "At least it wasn't zombies."
The elevator beeped, and the display changed to: Next Stop: Medieval Kingdom.
Mallory groaned. "Why do I feel like this is only going to get worse?"
