The Legend of the Ethereal Spheres

Chapter 16: Zorak's Shadow Paving

The dark fortress at the heart of Mount V'rak felt alive. Its corridors pulsed with dark energy, and the walls emitted an unending sound resembling the sighs of trapped souls. At its peak, in a room carved from black granite, stood Zorak. His armor was heavy, yet he moved effortlessly. The dark Aether within him pulsed like a heart. The window before him did not reveal the outside world; it displayed an endless void—a dimension dominated by dark Aether.

"Not yet," he muttered, watching the images forming on the window. Kai and his group were making their way through the swamp, each step filled with tension and uncertainty. Zorak smiled.

"They do not understand the burden of the Aether. They do not understand the weight of destiny."

His voice was deep, almost hypnotic. His loyal lieutenant, the Serpent, knelt behind him, still wounded from his recent battle. His serpentine figure was marred with dark scratches, yet his eyes still burned with loyalty.

"Lord Zorak," the Serpent began, keeping his gaze low, "I have learned much. The boy, Kai… he bears a spiral-shaped scar on his hand. He is no ordinary mortal. There is a connection between him and the light of the Aether."

Zorak turned slowly, his eyes, black as night, gleaming for a moment. "A spiral, you say? Interesting."

"There's more," the Serpent continued, despite visible discomfort. "His group is not united. There are cracks among them. The young genius, Miko, and the warrior, Reika… both are wary of him. If these cracks deepen…"

"Do you truly think I care about their petty conflicts?" Zorak's voice echoed coldly through the chamber. "All I desire is their energy. Their weaknesses will only make my task easier."

Zorak's laboratory was monumental.

Massive cylinders filled with dark Aether pulsed rhythmically. Inside them were humanoid figures, lifeless and faceless—Shadows. Zorak approached one of the cylinders and placed a hand on the glass. The dark Aether within stirred, shaping itself into a figure.

"They are a silent army," he said, turning to the Serpent. "They will not think. They will not fear. They will serve me without question."

"How…?" the Serpent's voice was quieter than usual.

"Dark Aether is not just power," Zorak explained. "It is a tool to shape reality. These mortals with their Aetheric Spheres believe they wield power. But I…" He gestured to a massive black altar at the end of the room. Upon it rested four spheres, glowing with dark light. "I am the one who decides what is real."

The Serpent's loyalty was unwavering, but behind the door, someone watched.

Nyx, another of Zorak's lieutenants, hid in the shadows. Her elegant figure, cloaked in dark fabric, remained motionless. Her eyes, glimmering like stars, observed her master with a mix of admiration and doubt.

"Shadows," she whispered to herself. "His army may destroy his enemies, but what if they turn against us?"

She entered silently, yet loud enough for Zorak to notice. "Nyx," he said without turning. "Have you come to express doubt in my plans?"

"Of course not, my lord," she replied smoothly. "I only wish to serve you."

"Enough!" Zorak's voice cut through any further attempt at conversation. "Now, we will unleash the Shadows. Their strength will test the limits of these mortals. And when Kai is exhausted…" His smile was terrifying. "We will discover the true extent of the spiral's power."

Deeper within the fortress, the portal began to pulse.

Its dark glow illuminated Zorak's face as he whispered ancient incantations. The Portal of Absolutes was not yet open, but Zorak was one step closer to his goal.
