"Thud! Thud! Thud!" Xiang Ri gently knocked on the door.

Just as he withdrew his hand, the sound of measured footsteps echoed from within.

Xiang Ri straightened his collar, eager to appear more presentable. The footsteps did not belong to Hao Meng, the little girl, for she never walked so quietly. It seemed his luck was favorable—this lady was at home, which made things much easier.

However, when the door opened, his smile immediately froze. The person who answered was not the lady he had hoped to see, nor was it the mischievous Hao Meng. Instead, it was the last person he wished to encounter—an icy beauty.

"It's you?" The frosty beauty, seeing him, narrowed her eyes coldly and raised her hand to slam the door shut.

Xiang Ri quickly placed his hand against the door to hold it open, calling out loudly, "Wait a moment, I have something to say." His gaze briefly swept across the room, finding no other figures. It was clear that only she was present; such a commotion would certainly have alerted anyone else in the house.

"You are not welcome here!" The icy beauty's voice was as cold as ever. She made a stronger attempt to close the door, but despite her efforts, it did not budge against the man's firm hold.

Xiang Ri stood his ground, unshaken. "Hey, I bear you no ill will, there's no need for—"

"If you don't leave, I'll call security!" The icy beauty cut him off mercilessly, one hand reaching into her pocket for her phone.

"Wait! I just need to ask you a few questions." Seeing her already dialing, Xiang Ri had no choice but to ask directly, "Do you know Tie Wan?"

The frosty beauty hesitated for a moment, stopping her pressing of the buttons. She looked up at him, her gaze filled with suspicion. "Do you know Tie Wan?" she asked, her tone still as indifferent as ever.

"Of course! In fact, it was through her that I got this tutoring job!" Xiang Ri felt a surge of excitement, noting her reaction. She not only knew the female officer, but seemed quite familiar with her—her behavior was telling.

"In that case, come in." After eyeing him for a moment, the icy beauty opened the door and let him inside.

Xiang Ri stepped in without further hesitation, his surprise growing. The mere mention of "Tie Wan" had allowed this woman, who clearly regarded him with hostility, to invite him in. This indicated a deeper connection between her and the female officer. Perhaps he could extract some useful information from this "iceberg" after all.

"Sit." The icy beauty took a seat on the sofa, nonchalantly turning off the TV with the remote.

"Thank you!" Even though she hadn't spoken to him directly, Xiang Ri still expressed his gratitude as he sat across from her. "Actually, you don't need to worry about the TV, I'm fine."

"No need," the frosty beauty interrupted him, her tone sharper than before. "How do you know my aunt?"

"Your aunt?" Xiang Ri paused, a look of disbelief crossing his face. "You mean Tie Wan is your aunt?"

"You didn't know?" Her eyes sharpened, her gaze turning more piercing.

"She never mentioned it to me, just asked me to come here for the tutoring," Xiang Ri replied calmly, seemingly unaffected by the shift in her demeanor.

"So, what is your relationship with my aunt?"

"Uh... how should I put it? I guess you could say I'm her boyfriend." 

The frosty beauty froze for a moment, then her gaze grew even colder and sharper as she studied him intently. Minutes passed before she finally spoke, her voice laced with suspicion. "You'd better not be lying to me."

Xiang Ri shrugged indifferently. "If you don't believe me, just call and ask. You'll find out." In truth, Xiang Ri was taking a gamble, hoping that she wouldn't actually make the call.

Nevertheless, a sense of unease lingered in his heart. If his gamble failed, given the female officer's resolute behavior at noon, there would be little hope of her speaking on his behalf. Not only would he fail to extract any useful information from this "iceberg," but there was also the very real possibility that he might be unceremoniously ejected, with a level of brutality to match the frosty demeanor of his host.

"I will," the icy beauty surprised Xiang Ri by taking out her phone and dialing a number.

It was already too late for Xiang Ri to stop her; doing so would only further expose his guilt. Deep down, however, a part of him was eager to hear the female officer's response, perhaps even hoping for it.

As the call connected, his anxiety intensified. He fixed his gaze on the icy beauty, not daring to blink.

"Hello, yes, this is Xiao Wen."

"I wanted to ask, does my aunt have a boyfriend?"

"She does? Really, she has a boyfriend and didn't tell me? What does he look like? You see, there's someone here claiming to be my aunt's boyfriend, so I just wanted to verify." After speaking, the frosty beauty's gaze fixed on Xiang Ri's face.

His breath quickened, his heart nearly leaping from his chest, as he consciously ignored the small, childlike gesture of the beauty. The female officer's response was now crucial.

But as the seconds ticked by, Xiang Ri's hopes dimmed. He could not discern any hint of reaction from the icy beauty's expression. Perhaps she was simply not one to display her emotions, occasionally casting brief glances his way, which only made the minutes stretch endlessly for him.

After what felt like an eternity, the icy beauty finally lowered the phone, and to Xiang Ri's astonishment, she did something unexpected—she thrust the phone toward him. "It's for you."

"My... mine?" Xiang Ri blinked, stunned, before a surge of joy flooded through him. Could Xiao Wan have forgiven him? He grabbed the phone eagerly, pressing it to his ear. "Xiao..."

"Xiao Xiang!" Before he could speak, the voice on the other end had already addressed him.

"Is this Auntie?" Xiang Ri's mood plummeted instantly.

"Yes, Xiao Xiang, what are you doing at Wenwen's house? If Wenwen hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have known."

"This tutoring job was arranged by Xiao Wan." Despite his low spirits, Xiang Ri couldn't afford to ignore the questions from his "mother-in-law."

"Ah, I see! That makes sense. I remember that Xiao Meng's English isn't great, so you're just the right person to help. By the way, when will you have time to come over to our house? Your uncle really wants to meet you. He missed the last chance because of some matters, and now he keeps complaining to me, saying he wasted an opportunity to meet his son-in-law and how regretful he feels. Come by when you can, treat it like your own home, and help me out by making things a little quieter around here."

"Okay, okay," Xiang Ri hurriedly nodded, feeling overwhelmed by the intensity of her warmth.

"Great! Let's not waste time picking a date; let's make it this weekend. Don't forget, or I'll end up with all this food going to waste!"

"Definitely, definitely."

"Good. I think Xiao Meng should be out of school now, so go ahead and teach her English. I'm hanging up now, but remember to come visit!"

"Mm."

However, Xiang Ri's "Mm" was clearly unnecessary, as the enthusiastic "mother-in-law" had already ended the call, her words final. Handing the phone back to the icy beauty, Xiang Ri received only a cold glance in return.

"If you ever hurt my aunt, I'll kill you," the frosty beauty declared, her tone sharp and unyielding.

Though her words stung, Xiang Ri understood that she was only looking out for the female officer, so he refrained from retaliating. "Don't worry, even if I ever hurt myself, I would never harm her."

"I hope you remember what you said today!" The icy beauty gave a cold snort, then ushered him toward the door. "You can leave now. My sister has duty today and won't be home until late."

Seeing the impenetrable wall she had built, Xiang Ri knew prying anything further from her would be difficult. He quickly shifted tactics. "By the way, what school does your sister attend?"

"You want to find her?" The frosty beauty adjusted her white-framed glasses, narrowing her eyes to slits. "Beihai Normal University Affiliated School."
