Chapter 27: Chapter 26: The Resilient Grace of Your Figure
"Teacher!" Stone Qing's eyes were filled with worry as she watched him take the hit.
"No problem!" Xiang Ri flashed her a radiant smile. "Just heading to the station for some tea, I'll be back soon!"
"Hmph!" Tiewan, frustrated by her fruitless search, was unwilling to let go. "Coming back? Maybe in your next life!"
"Hey, little miss, you seem to have a personal vendetta against me. Don't forget about last night…"
"Hou Gang, get him in the car!" Tiewan shouted.
"Yes!" Hou Gang's eyes flashed coldly. Last night? What did this guy do to Chief Tie? Seeing her irritation, he imagined the worst and angrily kicked Xiang Ri in the leg. "Move!"
"Kid, I'll remember you," Xiang Ri shot him a chilling look.
"Threatening law enforcement? I think you have a death wish." Hou Gang raised a fist, ready to deal out more punishment.
"Hou Gang!" Tiewan barked, halting him just in time. "Don't forget our role."
"Yes, Chief Tie. I apologize for my outburst." Hou Gang replied sheepishly, gripping Xiang Ri tightly as he shoved him into the car.
"I'll get you out, Teacher!" Stone Qing shouted from behind.
"Qing, tell Chuchu I won't be able to join her for lunch," Xiang Ri called back, hoping she would seek help. He prayed she'd act quickly; with her family's connections, she surely knew a few influential people. If not, he'd have to consider more drastic measures that could risk his exposure.
"Got it, Teacher! Don't worry, you'll be free soon," Stone Qing waved.
"Miss, that guy's a lowlife. You're best off staying clear," Hou Gang said with forced "kindness." At least, that's how he saw it.
Ignoring him, Stone Qing hurriedly ran back into the school.
Chuchu lounged against her pillow, a book from yesterday still open in her hands. Suddenly, her phone rang. Glancing at the caller, she saw it was Qing Jie.
"Qing Jie, what's up?"
"Chuchu, the teacher's been taken by the police," came the anxious reply.
"The teacher? Which teacher? You mean Xiang Ri?" Chuchu bolted upright, her pillow dropping to the floor.
"Yes. Just now, two officers detained him right at the school gate."
"Alright, got it. Bye!"
Chuchu set the phone down, quickly getting dressed. In the rush, she brushed against a tender spot, gritted her teeth, and cursed, "Damn scoundrel!" Unaware that her target was currently under interrogation, she stormed out.
"Name!"
"Xiang Ri."
"Age!"
"Let me think…"
Smack! Tiewan slammed her hand on the table. "Answer honestly!"
"Nineteen, I think," Xiang Ri rubbed his nose awkwardly, the cuffs making the movement stiff.
"Nineteen, yes or no? Stop stalling! This is the station, not some bar," Tiewan's eyes blazed.
Hou Gang leaned closer, his eyes gleaming with an idea. "Chief Tie, this punk's not cooperating. Want me to handle it?"
"No need. This is a crucial case; I'll conduct the questioning personally," Tiewan replied, fully aware that if she stepped out, Hou Gang would make Xiang Ri's life miserable. Administering a bit of punishment was one thing—she'd once beaten a pedophile into a black-eyed mess—but this boy was no ordinary punk. One could only imagine how a drug lord, armed with a Desert Eagle, would react when pushed. They still had no concrete evidence against him; should he be bailed out, they might face dire consequences.
Hou Gang, however, only misunderstood further, and his hands itched to draw his gun and end this lazy-looking kid on the spot.
"I'll ask again—are you or are you not nineteen?" Tiewan's tone grew harsher.
"Yes." Xiang Ri knew the station all too well; he'd visited more times than he could count, usually surrounded by his underlings and leaving with more swagger than the chief himself. To him, this place was almost as familiar as his own backyard.
"Gender!" Tiewan recorded with her pen, not even glancing up.
"You've got to be kidding," Xiang Ri said, mouth agape.
"Male or female?" Tiewan slammed down her pen.
"Didn't last night make that perfectly clear to you?" Xiang Ri looked at her with a mischievous glint.
"You—" Tiewan's entire body shook with rage, her finger pointed at him, but no words came.
Hou Gang's face twisted as he clenched his fists, eyes blazing. The implication of Xiang Ri's words and his suggestive look led him to a painful realization. With his own intentions for his beautiful superior, knowing another had already crossed that line was almost unbearable. If not for the last thread of reason, he would have drawn his weapon and ended the cocky man in front of him.
"Me, what? I'll tell you, I'm every bit a man." Xiang Ri declared arrogantly.
"You leave me no choice!" Tiewan stood, determined to teach him a lesson.
Knock, knock, knock! An urgent rapping on the door broke the tension.
"What is it?" Hou Gang, already seething, swung the door open, bellowing, "Oh… Director?" His tone shifted immediately.
"Hou Gang, what's with all the yelling!" Standing in the doorway were three people. At the front was a middle-aged man in uniform, tall, imposing, his air one of authority. Behind him stood two men in sharp suits, exuding success, one carrying a briefcase, the other smiling warmly.
"Director, I didn't realize—" Hou Gang stammered.
The director didn't let him finish, striding forward and turning a steely gaze to Xiang Ri. "Who put the cuffs on him?"
Hou Gang shivered; he was the one who had cuffed him, but judging by the director's reaction, he might have restrained someone he shouldn't have.
"Director, I was the one who cuffed him." Tiewan stepped in, unwilling to see her subordinate penalized.
"Ah, Xiaowan, you can't be so rash," the director spoke as a mentor would to a protégé. Then, looking to Hou Gang, he ordered, "Hou Gang! Get those cuffs off!"
"Yes, Director!" Hou Gang moved to unlock them.
"No!" Two voices interrupted in unison.
Xiang Ri and Tiewan locked eyes, sparks flying between them.
"This is all just a misunderstanding," the director stammered, dabbing sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. Xiang Ri barely held back a laugh at the sight—such a powerful figure with a dainty floral handkerchief.
"A misunderstanding? Dragging me here without cause and that's it?" Xiang Ri scoffed, slamming his cuffed hands onto the table, staring mockingly at the director.
"Well… Xiaowan, this matter…" The director sighed. With anyone else, he could have swept this under the rug, but Tiewan was not someone he dared offend.
"There's no way he's walking free! This man is a notorious drug lord, and I suspect him of trafficking arms as well." Tiewan's words sent shockwaves through the room.
The man with the briefcase stepped forward, presenting his card. "I am Mr. Xiang's lawyer. You claim my client is a drug lord and arms dealer—on what evidence?"
"I saw him with a local gang member discussing the terms of a drug deal," Tiewan replied, gripping the card without even glancing at it.
Xiang Ri froze in surprise. Could this woman be accusing him because he brushed against her? He recalled asking Monkey at the bar to help track down an A8, something about a million dollars—was that what sparked her suspicion? What rotten luck.
"Now, Officer," the lawyer continued, his tone razor-sharp, "even setting aside my client's guilt or innocence, do you believe that's sufficient for trial? Were there other witnesses to support your testimony? I'm not doubting your vision, of course, but do you have any corroborating evidence?"
"..." Tiewan was momentarily speechless. She wasn't sure if anyone else had witnessed it; her only clear impression was the amount. Monkey and his lackeys, seasoned petty criminals, had been there. It would be difficult to extract anything from them now. If she had known she'd face last night's "kingpin," she would have detained Monkey and his associates, compared statements, and avoided such a dilemma.
Just then, the smiling man stepped in diplomatically. "Ms. Tie, it truly seems there may have been some misunderstanding here."
Only now did Tiewan notice him, surprised. "Mr. Yang? What brings you here?"
"I'm here as the deputy mayor's representative to visit a friend," Mr. Yang replied with a smile.
"The mayor's friend? You mean him?" Tiewan gestured to the relaxed man seated before her.
"Yes, Ms. Tie."
"That's impossible! He still has…" She stopped short, recalling the Desert Eagle. Yang couldn't possibly be lying, could he? Or could this man have such connections that not even the mayor dared to cross him?
"Alright, girl, stop staring and get these cuffs off me!" Xiang Ri's patience wore thin; his lawyer had mentioned that Chuchu was waiting outside.
"You…" She fought the urge to punch him but refrained in front of everyone. Begrudgingly, she reached over to unlock his cuffs.
As she did, Xiang Ri leaned in, murmuring just for her ears, "By the way, your posterior possesses a remarkable elasticity.""
