The Mazeborn Ascendant

Chapter 4: Tension in the air

Damon staggered into the glowing passageway, his legs threatening to give out beneath him. His breath came in shallow gasps, and his body ached from the fight. The faint hum of the Maze surrounded him again, an ever-present reminder of its mysterious, otherworldly nature.

The passage opened into a new chamber, smaller and dimmer than the one before. The others were huddled near the far wall, their expressions a mix of fear and uncertainty. Julie broke away from the group as soon as she saw him, her eyes wide with relief.

"Damon! You're okay!"

He gave her a tired grin.

"Barely. But I'm here."

Julie grabbed his arm, helping him to a spot against the wall where he could sit.

"You look awful,"

she said, her voice soft.

"Feel worse,"

Damon admitted, leaning his head back and closing his eyes.

"But hey, at least I'm alive."

The man in the leather jacket stepped forward, his arms crossed.

"So, what was that back there? You just… made a sword out of thin air and took down that thing?"

Damon opened one eye, meeting the man's skeptical gaze.

"Something like that. Guessing it has to do with these marks."

He tapped the glowing symbol on his chest, which had dimmed slightly but still pulsed faintly.

"That's crazy,"

the guy in the hoodie said, shaking his head.

"I mean, cool, but crazy."

"Crazy seems to be the theme here,"

Damon said, sitting up straighter.

"And I'm guessing we're all stuck in it together."

"Great,"

the leather jacket guy muttered.

"Just what I needed."

Julie shot him a glare.

"Hey, he just saved all of us back there. Maybe show a little gratitude."

"I didn't ask for his help,"

the man shot back.

"Alright, enough,"

Damon said, holding up a hand.

"Arguing isn't going to get us anywhere. If we're going to survive this place, we need to work together."

"Work together?"

the woman in the business suit said, her tone incredulous.

"With who? None of us know what we're doing!"

"Exactly,"

Damon said, looking around at the group.

"Which is why we need to figure it out. The voice said we've been 'marked' and given 'gifts.' That's got to mean something."

"He's right,"

Julie said, stepping closer to Damon.

"We need to figure out what these marks can do."

The group fell into a tense silence, their eyes darting between one another. Finally, the guy in the hoodie spoke up.

"Alright, fine. But how do we even start?"

Damon pushed himself to his feet, wincing at the soreness in his muscles.

"First, we need to get organized. What's everyone's name? We've got to at least know who we're working with."

The hoodie guy raised a hand sheepishly.

"I'm Liam."

"Julie,"

she said, giving Damon a small smile.

The woman in the business suit sighed.

"Emma."

The man in the leather jacket hesitated, then muttered,

"Kai."

Damon nodded.

"Alright. I'm Damon. Now that we're all acquainted, let's take a look around. There might be clues in this chamber."

The group fanned out, searching the dimly lit room. The walls were lined with more glowing patterns, but these seemed different from the ones in the previous chambers. They pulsed rhythmically, almost like they were alive. In the center of the room was a circular platform, its surface etched with intricate designs.

"Hey,"

Liam called out, pointing to the platform.

"This looks important."

Damon joined him, crouching to inspect the markings. As he ran his fingers over the grooves, his mark flared briefly, and a faint hum filled the air.

"Did you see that?"

Damon asked, looking up at the others.

"Your mark glowed,"

Julie said, her brow furrowed.

"Do it again."

Damon touched the platform again, and the same thing happened. The hum grew louder, and the designs on the platform began to light up, one by one. The group stepped back as the entire surface started to glow, and then, with a soft click, a pedestal rose from the center.

Resting atop the pedestal was a small, spherical object, about the size of a grapefruit. It pulsed with the same light as the platform, and faint tendrils of energy swirled around it.

"What is that?"

Emma asked, her voice hushed.

"Looks like something important,"

Damon said, reaching for it.

"Wait!" Kai snapped.

"You don't know what it does."

"Exactly,"

Damon said with a grin.

"Which is why I'm going to find out."

Before anyone could stop him, he grabbed the sphere. The moment his fingers made contact, a surge of energy coursed through him. His mark flared brighter than ever, and for a brief moment, his mind was flooded with images, a maze stretching endlessly in all directions, monstrous creatures stalking its halls, and glowing relics hidden in its depths.

When the vision faded, Damon staggered, nearly dropping the sphere. Julie caught his arm, steadying him.

"What did you see?"

she asked, her voice urgent.

Damon took a deep breath, his mind still reeling.

"The Maze. It's… massive. There are floors, like levels in a game, each with its own challenges. And there are others… thousands of them. Just like us."

"Thousands?"

Liam repeated, his eyes wide.

"Yeah,"

Damon said.

"And if we're going to make it out of here, we're going to need more than just dumb luck."

Kai crossed his arms.

"So, what's the plan, fearless leader?"

Damon glanced at the sphere in his hands, its light still pulsing faintly.

"First, we figure out what this does. Then, we start looking for answers. And maybe, just maybe, we figure out a way to survive."

Just as he finished speaking, the chamber shook violently, and a section of the wall slid open to reveal another passage. Before anyone could react, a monstrous growl echoed from the new corridor, followed by heavy, thudding footsteps.

The group froze, their expressions ranging from fear to disbelief. Damon's grip tightened on the sphere as a massive creature stepped into view. It was taller and bulkier than the first, its glowing red eyes fixed on the group.

"Everyone, back!"

Damon shouted, shoving Julie behind him.

Kai clenched his fists.

"We can't fight that thing!"

"We don't have a choice!"

Damon retorted.

The creature roared and charged, its footsteps shaking the ground. Before anyone could react, it lunged at Emma, its massive claws slicing through the air. She screamed, trying to dodge, but she was too slow. The creature's claws tore into her, and she crumpled to the ground, blood pooling beneath her.

"Emma!"

Julie screamed, her voice breaking.

Damon's heart raced as he watched the life fade from Emma's eyes. For a moment, the chamber seemed to go silent, the weight of what had just happened settling over the group.

"This isn't a game,"

Damon said, his voice low but steady.

"If we don't fight, we're next."

The creature turned its glowing eyes toward them, and Damon stepped forward, the sphere in his hand glowing brighter. He glanced back at the others, determination in his gaze.

"Let's finish this,"

he said.
