Chapter 10: Where are Advait and Mahika?
As the first light of dawn gently kissed the village of Dharmagiri, painting the sky with a soft, golden glow, Jai Shankar finally arrived at the mansion. His journey had been a long and winding road, both physically and emotionally taxing, and every step he took felt like the weight of the world was on his shoulders. It was still early—just 5 in the morning—but the gentle morning sun cast a serene light on the grand estate, a light that seemed to mock the storm that raged within him.
From her room window, Vedhika, who had spent the night tossing and turning in anxious anticipation, caught sight of her husband approaching. A surge of hope bubbled up within her, pushing her to rush downstairs. Her heart pounded with a mix of anxiety and the faintest flicker of expectation. She reached the front door just as Jai Shankar dismounted his horse. His face, drawn with exhaustion and sorrow, made her heart sink.
"Jai Shankar!" Vedhika cried out, her voice quivering as she rushed toward him, her eyes scanning his face desperately for any sign of relief, any good news. "Did you find them? Where are Advait and Mahika?"
Jai Shankar looked at his wife, his gaze hollow and distant, his eyes rimmed with red as though the weight of the world had fallen on him. He opened his mouth to speak, but the words seemed to choke him, the pain of what he had witnessed too raw, too overwhelming to express.
Vedhika took his hands in hers, her grip tightening as she tried to read the agony etched in his expression. "What happened, Jai? Please, you have to tell me."
Jai Shankar exhaled a deep, shaky breath, his shoulders drooping as if the very air around him was too heavy to bear. "Vedhika, I... I found Mahika," he began, his voice barely a whisper, as if speaking the truth aloud would make it too real. "But... she..."
Vedhika's eyes widened in horror, her breath catching in her throat as she braced herself for the crushing news. "No," she whispered, shaking her head vehemently. "No, it can't be true."
Jai Shankar closed his eyes tightly, and a single tear slipped down his cheek, a silent testament to the grief he could no longer hold back. "She's gone, Vedhika. She... she didn't make it."
Vedhika staggered backward, her hand flying to her mouth to suppress a guttural cry that threatened to tear through her. The world seemed to spin, the weight of the loss pulling her into a darkness she couldn't escape. "And Advait? What about Advait?" she asked, her voice breaking, almost pleading.
"I couldn't find him," Jai Shankar confessed, his voice thick with emotion, as if even the words were too heavy to carry. "Only Mahika's body, and then... then the lions..."
Vedhika's knees gave way beneath her, and she collapsed to the ground, her sobs wracking her body, the sound of her grief rising in the stillness of the morning. Jai Shankar knelt beside her, wrapping his arms around her as they both succumbed to their sorrow. In that moment, they were two souls adrift in the storm, clinging to each other in the wake of their shattered family.
"We have to be strong for Aryan," Jai Shankar murmured through his tears, his voice thick with the kind of grief that made each word feel like an impossible task. "He can't lose us too."
Vedhika nodded through her tears, her face buried in Jai Shankar's chest, her heart breaking for the child who had already lost so much. "We'll get through this," she whispered, but the words felt hollow, as though they were not meant for the moment they were living. "We have to."
Together, they sat there for what felt like an eternity, holding each other in the growing light of dawn, finding a small measure of comfort in their shared sorrow. In the face of such devastating loss, they knew they would have to summon every ounce of strength they had, for Aryan's sake and in memory of the family they had loved and lost.
