Chapter 7: Chapter 7 – First meeting after divorce
Devin could not erase the sunken look on his face. Yes, the pregnancy was a big problem, an obstacle to his plans. Everything would be ruined but the plan was only marked out in his head.
"No, I'm just surprised. Does Robin know about it?" He asked Sabrina. She could tell that something was not right but only attributed it to the shock like he had said earlier.
"He already has a child growing in another woman's belly and I won't let my child go through the pain of fighting for a place in his father's life." Sabrina spoke softly but there was pain in her eyes.
"It's good you haven't told him. Most people don't know me as your brother and we don't share the same surname. Should need be, don't forget to use it to your advantage," Devin encouraged her, determination coating his every word. Sabrina was happy that he was not upset with her like she thought earlier.
"Thank you."
"I will leave now but I will come and take you to the hospital tomorrow for a proper check," Devin said without his usual smirk. Something was eating him up and he hoped that miraculously, the test would turn out negative.
"I was about to say that too. We don't know for sure," Cobby said. Lizzy knew that Sabrina's days before going into labor were numbered from today. A miracle happened in her life today and she had to take advantage of it.
"Pregnant women still work so since you are back, I will hand over affairs of the company to you," Lizzy said to Sabrina who looked surprised. It was not in her expectation to be given a part to play in the family business after all she did.
"Lizzy, let your sister rest. She has not worked all her life," Cobby smiled and spoke. Secretly, he was happy.
"It doesn't matter. She is smart and I want to assist Devin. You know how I have always wanted to be a fashion designer," Lizzy smiled and spoke. It was the reason why she loved to be around Devin. The guy was the king of fashion, thanks to his father's fashion house. Devin was bemused and said,
"In that case, I will have to test your abilities. I am giving you 500k to change Sabrina's wardrobe. If you get it right, then you'll be my assistant."
Lizzy was already feeling excited and the atmosphere warmed again. Her dream was so close, she could touch it. "When do I start?"
"Now," Devin said to her shock, she began to feel that he was pulling her legs but seeing the dress Sabrina wore, she also had to agree that her elder sister indeed needed a change of wardrobe. That dress was new but out of the fashion and not under any designer name. But there was one problem.
"And who hands over the companies affairs?"
"That is still up to you Lizzy. I will increase the budget 800k. You should keep some of her clothes in my penthouse too, just in case you two come for sleep overs. You know I don't like it when women wear men's clothes."
Lizzy gasped for breath like she was drowning in the workload. "It seems there will be no rest for me. I will start with training big sis and then, the second part later."
"You only have three days darling," Devin smirked before turning around to leave when Lizzy caught him by the arm.
"Today is Thursday and I have a Saturday so that's not bad. I can work on the designs in between works and do the purchasing on Saturday. Here, let me have your black card."
Devin brought out his wallet from the pocket of his Blazer. He removed one of his black cards and gave it to her. "Please remember to return it," he warned her. Lizzy beamed. She was going to spend more than 800k for real.
Hours later, Lizzy was already rounding up on taking Sabrina through the company affairs. "The processing company is in Alabama but you don't have to make that trip. We already have a manager there and he will send you regular reports. You have to make sure that it tallies with every piece of jewelry we receive before it goes to the showroom," Lizzy explained before adding,
"We should call it a day. It's five minutes to closing time. I will introduce you to all departmental heads tomorrow so let me call the driver to come and get us."
"I'm already here," Devin said from the entrance when the door pushed open. Both women were surprised to see him again since it was barely five hours before he left.
"Devin, you came back?" Sabrina probed. She felt like Devin was giving less attention to his job because of her.
"Well, since I have to take you to the hospital in the morning, I figured you should spend your first night of freedom at my house. I already picked a few clothes for you," he smiled and said, looking better than before. Lizzy was somewhat happy with the arrangement. Sabrina was picking things faster than she imagined so things were moving in her favor.
"Great, I will leave with the driver then," Lizzy said and stood up. Before she reached the door, Devin blocked her way and stared at her curiously,
"You seem to be in a hurry. Where are you going?"
"Night window shopping for what you asked me to do. I can't design everything so I might as well get the best in town. Not from your clothing line," Lizzy shrugged.
"Don't stay up too late, Lizzy," Devin moved out of the way and spoke.
"You don't have to worry. I am not going alone," Lizzy reminded him.
"I know but precautions should still be taken," Devin said, looking disturbed. He has always been there for his sisters and wanted to do so all the time.
"Alright. I will see you tomorrow, Brina," Lizzy said and left.
"Let's go," Devin said, leading Sabrina away. Their father left an hour ago. When they got to Devin's penthouse, he said, "relax. I will make you dinner but that is your room," he pointed to the door next to his. "The one after is for Lizzy," he explained.
He had rooms in his penthouse for all his sisters so they could visit at any time they wanted. He was not sure he would see Sabrina anytime soon but still kept one for her. Sabrina's eyes welled up instantly. For the past three years, she was busy taking care of Robin but he never for once took care of her. What an Irony.
"Why are you crying?" Devin was disturbed when he came out of the kitchen and saw Sabrina curled up on the couch in front of the tv. She had showered and changed. The TV was also on but he could tell that she was not watching. Just crying. "Please don't tell me you are missing the jerk?" Devin asked with a puckered brow.
"I'm just happy to be back," Sabrina forced a smile and spoke.
"Good, now let's eat and don't forget you are now a working woman," he brought the food to her on the couch.
Sabrina ogled at the deliciously looking dish on the tray. She began to eat as soon as she had the tray in her hands, moaning in between. They both learnt greatly from their mother in terms of cooking, except Lizzy who was too young by then. She learnt from Sabrina.
"Yeah, everything is working so fast. Can you take me somewhere before the hospital tomorrow? I will be brief, I promise," Sabrina said after emptying the plate. Devin took the plate and began to walk towards the kitchen whiles he asked,
"Where?"
"To Robin's grandmother. I have to inform her."
"The more reason why we should sleep early," Robin advised and she agreed.
The next day, Sabrina spent almost an hour with Ceceila, Robin's grandmother before she went back to the car. "I'm sorry I took longer. The old woman was so miserable upon hearing the news. I gave her my new number."
"Good. Here's the thing, there is a very important client waiting for me so I will drop you at the doctor's office, rush to the office and come back to get you. The doctor is my friend so when you are done, she will give you a place to wait till I get back," Devin revealed while taking in her appearance. She rocked the dress he picked for her and her makeup, though simple, enhanced her beauty greatly.
"No problem," Sabrina smiled and spoke. Devin dropped her as said and went to the office.
A few minutes later, at the Doctor's office.
"Congratulations, Misses…"
"Miss. Miss James," Sabrina filled in for the confused doctor.
"Sorry, I forgot. Congratulations! Miss James, you are four weeks pregnant!"
Sabrina was not surprised since she already knew. "Thank you and my ex-husband shouldn't know about this," Sabrina said calmly. The doctor nodded her head.
"Devin has informed me about everything."
"Thank you," Sabrina smiled and spoke.
After the remaining checks were done with the confirmation that Sabrina was fine and her baby growing well, she was asked to return in a month. Sabrina walked out of the doctor's office since Devin had said he was on his way. She planned to wait for him at the hospital car park when someone pulled and held her by the arm, a little violently.
"What are you doing here, Sabrina?"
