Chapter 8: Chapter 8: The Fox Clan
"Ssshh~ Ssshh~"
A damp sensation on the face.
A slight frown, with eyes slightly moving.
Vaguely hearing a child's voice calling out:"Grandma, grandma, she's awake, she's awake."
Then, the sound of footsteps echoed around.
Struggling to open her eyes, she looked at the stone wall above her head.
Turning her head, she saw numerous red and white foxes surrounding her, and one particularly bold one even leaped up, pressing its face close to hers and gently licking.
Jiang Li was utterly shocked!
Cold sweat broke out all over her body, and she tried to push the fox away with her hand, only to find that her arm was utterly powerless, her whole body aching and weak.
"Monster!"
Jiang Li then witnessed an unforgettable sight.
A hunched old woman, leaning on a cane, slowly approached, but atop her head was the head of a red fox. The fox's face appeared somewhat aged, with half of its red fur interspersed with white.
The only thought that crossed Jiang Li's mind was "I've encountered a monster!"
In this world, not only humans could cultivate, but other creatures could as well.
Once they seize an opportunity and awaken their spiritual awareness, they can begin to cultivate.
Animals that have awakened their spiritual awareness are called demon beasts. The levels of demon beasts are divided into: Awakening, Demon Scholar, Demon Master, Demon Lord, Demon King, Demon Saint, Demon Immortal, Demon Sovereign, and Demon Deity.
Only when demon beasts reach the Demon King level can they speak human language, and when they reach the Demon Saint level, they can transform into human form. However, after transforming into human form, it becomes extremely difficult for demon beasts to cultivate and level up.
The fox woman before her eyes, who was in a semi-human form, was likely a Demon King. Just the day before yesterday, she met a strange woman, and now she encountered a demon beast. Jiang Li had never experienced such excitement in her life before!
Jiang Li had just calmed her mind when the demon beast with the red fox head had already approached.
She slightly bent down, and the lively eyes on the red fox head stared straight at Jiang Li, with an indescribable strangeness in her gaze, as if she could see through every bit of fear in Jiang Li's heart.
Jiang Li felt as if something was stuck in her throat, wanting to speak but finding her voice stuck in her throat, unable to come out.
"Hehehe~"
The woman seemed to sense Jiang Li's embarrassment and let out a laugh that was tinged with the weight of years.
This laughter echoed within the cave filled with foxes, adding an even more eerie atmosphere.
"Young master, don't be afraid, we won't harm you," the old fox's voice was harsh and had a strange intonation, as if there was a bone stuck in her throat.
To Jiang Li, it sounded like a death spell, causing his heart to pound even faster.
Jiang Li's eyes widened, and he inwardly lamented. He had thought he was composed enough, but now, at this critical moment, he truly felt the fear of facing the unknown.
"What do you want? If you have something to say, just say it!" It took all Jiang Li's effort to squeeze out these words from his throat.
Seeing that he was scared but still relatively composed, the old fox nodded with satisfaction.
With a gentle wave of her hand, the foxes surrounding Jiang Li dispersed, making way for her.
"Since young master is so forthright, I won't beat around the bush either!"
As the old fox spoke, she slowly rose to her feet and began pacing in front of Jiang Li, her red fox head swaying gently with each step, an indescribably strange sight.
"This is the Cave of the Solitary Foxes, where we have always lived. But at some point, the spiritual energy around this cave became chaotic. Although we searched everywhere and even found the source, we couldn't get close. In the end, with no other choice, we planned to relocate our entire clan, and that's when we encountered you, young master."
"And you, young master, I sensed a special aura about you that seems to have some connection with the disturbance that's affecting us, which is why we brought you here. We hope you can help us find the source of that malevolent aura and resolve this crisis."
She stopped walking, her gaze once again fixed on Jiang Li, her eyes now filled with urgency.
Another mention of a special aura? That mysterious woman in black had said the same thing that night!
He had lived this long and had never heard anyone say he had a special aura. It seemed like these people were just making excuses without even changing their stories.
Although he was skeptical inside, he maintained a polite demeanor and said,"You're joking, elder. If even a demon king like you can't do anything, how could I, a mere mortal, have anything to do with spiritual energy?"
"Although I wish to help you with your troubles, my body is injured, and I'm afraid I won't be able to do this," Jiang Li said helplessly.
"Young master, don't worry about your body. As long as you're willing to help, I will assist you in eliminating the toxins within your body and restore you to health, how does that sound?" The fox woman smiled lightly, a hint of cunning flashing in her eyes.
With that, she extended her other hand, and a soft glow slowly rose in her palm, with threads of spiritual energy seemingly flowing within the light.
Without waiting for Jiang Li's consent, she gently placed her palm on his chest, and the light seeped into his body like flowing water.
Jiang Li felt a warm and gentle force spreading throughout his body. The originally sore and weak limbs gradually felt some warmth, and the sense of helplessness that had pervaded his entire body was slowly diminishing.
He could even clearly sense his broken leg bones slowly knitting together, without any pain.
"How about it? Do you feel better now?" The fox woman tilted her head slightly, looking at Jiang Li as she asked.
Jiang Li tried to move his arm and found that it was indeed much stronger than before. In these ten years, he had never felt so relaxed.
He couldn't help but be secretly amazed at the fox woman's abilities.
Despite his inner elation, he kept his expression neutral, merely nodding slightly and saying,"Thank you for your help, elder. I do feel better. However, regarding the source of the disrupted spiritual energy, I really can't guarantee that I'll be able to figure it out. I hope you won't have too high expectations."
The fox woman gently waved her hand and said,"Young master, please don't worry. Just do your best. Since I've chosen you, it's because I believe you have the capability. Once you've fully recovered, I'll have a few sisters take you to the place where the spiritual energy is most chaotic. Perhaps when you get there, you might make some discoveries."
Jiang Li inwardly lamented his predicament, but at this point, he could only take things one step at a time.
Before long, under the nourishment of the fox woman's spiritual energy, the accumulated illness and toxins in Jiang Li's body had been largely eliminated. Although he still appeared frail, Jiang Li could feel that as long as he exercised properly from now on, he would be able to live like a normal person.
Seeing his condition, the fox woman gently whistled. Three brightly colored red foxes came dashing out from the depths of the cave, standing in front of her with lively eyes, waiting for instructions.
"You three, accompany the young master to the place where the spiritual energy is chaotic and investigate carefully. Make sure to protect his safety. If anything happens, come back and report to me immediately," the fox woman instructed the red foxes.
"Chirp~"
(Understood.)
But Jiang Li understood their response. They could speak without taking human form! However, after encountering so many strange things today, this didn't cause much of a stir, so he simply pretended not to have heard.
One of the larger red foxes walked up to Jiang Li and gently rubbed against his leg, seemingly signaling for him to follow.
Looking at the fluffy foxes in front of him, he reluctantly stood up and followed them deeper into the cave.
