THE ROAD OF THE HEART

Chapter 10: A Broken Bond

The months passed slowly as Anaberu nursed Takako back to health. She poured her heart into aiding his recovery—cooking, cleaning his wounds, and keeping his spirits up. Yet, as the days turned into weeks, a distance began to grow between them.

No matter how much she tried to focus on their reunion, her thoughts drifted to Kai. His strength, his quiet loyalty, and the weight of his unspoken love haunted her every waking moment.

One evening, as they sat by the fire, Takako broke the silence with a confession that shattered the fragile peace between them.

"Anaberu," he began hesitantly, his gaze fixed on the flames.

"There's something I need to tell you. The truth about why I was captured."

Her stomach tightened at the guilt in his tone.

"What do you mean?"

He hesitated, his jaw clenching as he wrestled with the words. Finally, he sighed.

"I was lured away. I… I became involved with someone. She was kind, mysterious, and beautiful. At first, I didn't know she was the daughter of the bandit leader. By the time I realized the truth, it was too late. She betrayed me, and that's how I ended up their prisoner."

Anaberu stared at him, her heart pounding as his words sunk in.

"So, you were captured… because you fell for another woman?"

He nodded, his shoulders sagging with shame.

"I made a mistake, Anaberu. A terrible one. I lost sight of what mattered. I'm sorry for everything I put you through—truly, I am. Please, can you forgive me?"

Anaberu rose to her feet, her hands trembling. Her emotions boiled over—anger, hurt, and betrayal flooding her at once.

She had risked her life for this man, crossed dangerous lands, and endured heartbreak. And now she learned his imprisonment wasn't the result of heroism or bad luck but infidelity.

"Forgive you?" she whispered, her voice shaking.

"Takako, I gave everything to find you. I faced death to bring you back. And all the while, you… you were with someone else?"

Takako lowered his head.

"I know I don't deserve forgiveness. But I still love you, Anaberu. Let me make things right. Please."

She shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks.

"It's not just about what you did, Takako. It's about what I've realized. I don't love you anymore."

His head snapped up, his face stricken.

"What?"

She took a deep breath, finding the strength to speak the truth.

"Somewhere along this journey, my feelings for you faded. I can't forgive what you've done, but even if I could, my heart isn't yours anymore. It hasn't been for a long time."

Takako's shoulders slumped, the weight of her words crushing him.

"So… this is the end?"

Anaberu nodded, her voice steady.

"Yes, it is. I'm canceling our engagement. You betrayed my trust, and I can't rebuild what's been broken."

Takako closed his eyes, pain etched into every line of his face.

"Please give me another chance. Give us a second chance. I promise it won't happen again. Never." Takako pleaded.

"No." She said.

"I understand," he said quietly. "I won't fight you on this."

The next morning, Anaberu packed her belongings. But instead of returning to her hometown, where whispers and judgment awaited her, she made a different decision. She left Takako behind, walking away from the memories and burdens of her past.

She journeyed to a place where no one knew her name—a small, quiet village nestled in the mountains. There, she began a new life, alone but free.

She found solace in the simplicity of her days—working in the fields, learning to weave, and taking comfort in the rhythm of a life unburdened by the expectations of others.

In the solitude of the mountains, she often thought of Kai. His quiet strength, the way he had kissed her hand, and the sacrifice he had made for her happiness. She wondered if he was still out there, watching over her from the shadows.
