Chapter 24: CHAPTER 24
As Hamza's soulful music resonated around the campfire, not far away, soldiers began to gather, drawn by the heartfelt melodies. Among the onlookers were Major Abdullahi and Nurudeen, who couldn't help but be captivated by Hamza's talent. The major had initially come to convince Hamza to join the military, but witnessing his remarkable talent changed his perspective. He recognized that it would be a disservice to stifle such potential, and he decided to help instead.
When Hamza finished singing, he opened his eyes to find himself surrounded by soldiers, all gazing at him in appreciation. Although no words were spoken, they understood the message his song conveyed. Suddenly, Shamshudeen, beaming with pride, shouted, "Give it up for my brother, Hamza!" The soldiers erupted into applause, showing their admiration for the gifted young man.
Amidst the applause, Hamza heard a familiar sound:
DING!
- Your vocal level increases by one {vocal beginner 7}
- +30 PP
Hamza was pleasantly surprised that his level had increased.
The soldiers, eager to break the somber mood, started chatting again. Major Abdullahi approached them, and they all stood at attention, saluting their superior. He acknowledged their salute, then signaled for Hamza and Shamshudeen to accompany him.
They walked together until they reached the major's office. Inside, Major Abdullahi gestured for Hamza and Shamshudeen to sit. As they settled into their chairs, he directed his attention to Shamshudeen, asking, "So, have you made up your mind about the offer?" Shamshudeen replied with conviction, "Yes, sir, I have, and I am willing."
Major Abdullahi then turned his gaze to Hamza and inquired, "I heard you refused; why is that?" Hamza met the major's eyes and explained, "I mean no offense, sir, but I have a dream, and I would like to pursue it." The major chuckled and responded, "No need to be overly polite. Your dream is about music, isn't it?" Hamza nodded in confirmation.
The room fell silent, the tension palpable. Then Major Abdullahi surprised everyone by saying, "But if you want to pursue music, you won't achieve anything by staying here, you know that, right?" Hamza nodded, still uncertain about the direction of the conversation.
Major Abdullahi continued, "So, I've decided to help you." Hamza was taken aback by this unexpected turn of events. The major had a few surprises up his sleeve. "I made a few calls and found families in Lagos state who are willing to adopt you. According to what I heard from your sister, you can speak Yoruba, right?" Hamza, still processing the offer, replied, "Yes, sir, I can speak a little Yoruba."
The major smiled and said, "So, what do you say? Are you interested?" Overwhelmed by the sudden generosity, Hamza couldn't help but ask, "Why are you helping me this much?" -Major Abdullahi's response was heartfelt: "Well, in a way you have helped me, but that's not the only reason. I see that you have talent, so why not help you instead of letting it go to waste?"
Overcome with gratitude, Hamza stood up, moved toward Major Abdullahi, and fully prostrated on the ground, a sign of respect in Yoruba and Hausa tradition. Tears of joy welled up in his eyes as he expressed his heartfelt gratitude with a simple, "Thank you, sir." Major Abdullahi was touched by Hamza's gesture, and he gently raised him to his feet, saying, "Stand up, no need for that. Just make sure you listen to them, that's all. Also, you'll finish your schooling before pursuing music, okay?"
Hamza, feeling indebted and deeply moved, replied, "Sir, just letting me stay is already more than enough, but school is not nec…" He was interrupted by Major Abdullahi, who reassured him, "That's alright, don't worry about it. And don't forget, tomorrow is the ceremony. You'll leave as soon as possible."
With their paths now set, Hamza and Shamshudeen bid each other farewell, ready to embrace the new opportunities that lay ahead.
