THE SHADOW OF LUMINA

Chapter 3: Chapter 3 :The shadow Awaken

The shadowy forms emerged from the edges of the ruins, their figures twisting unnaturally, as if the darkness itself had come to life. Aveline's heart raced, but she forced herself to stand her ground. Her dagger felt small in her hand, insignificant against these formless creatures.

"Show yourself!" she called out, though the tremor in her voice betrayed her.

The shadows didn't answer. Instead, they began to circle her, their movements slow and deliberate. The hum from the glowing dais grew louder, and the runes on the ground pulsed in rhythm, as if reacting to the presence of the shadows—or to Aveline herself.

One of the figures broke from the circle and lunged toward her. Instinct took over. Aveline dodged to the side, her dagger slashing out. The blade met no resistance, slicing through the creature's body as if it were smoke. Yet the shadow recoiled, its form unraveling like a loose thread before dissolving into nothing.

The remaining shadows paused, their shapes shifting erratically as though confused.

"Not so untouchable after all," Aveline muttered, though her grip on the dagger tightened.

She turned back to the dais, realizing it might be the key to stopping the creatures. The glowing symbols on the stone were now moving, forming new patterns that reminded her of the map's shifting ink.

A memory surfaced—her mentor's voice from years ago. "Maps are alive, Aveline. They respond to their reader, revealing their secrets only to those who know how to listen."

Taking a deep breath, she dropped to one knee and placed the map flat on the dais, aligning it with the glowing symbols. The whispers returned, louder this time, but Aveline forced herself to focus.

The runes on the dais flared brightly, and the shadows froze mid-movement. One by one, they turned toward the center of the ruins, drawn to the light emanating from the dais.

"That's right," Aveline said under her breath. "Come closer."

But the momentary relief was short-lived. The largest of the shadows, a towering figure with jagged, spiked edges, stepped forward. Its hollow face turned toward her, and for the first time, it spoke.

"You cannot stop it," the figure said, its voice a deep, guttural echo that seemed to reverberate through her very bones. "The Shadow is awake."

Aveline's blood ran cold. "What shadow?" she demanded, though she wasn't sure she wanted the answer.

The figure didn't respond. Instead, it raised a claw-like hand and pointed toward the horizon. Aveline followed its gesture, her gaze falling on the distant peaks beyond the ruins.

To her horror, a massive black cloud was rising from the mountains, its tendrils creeping across the sky like the limbs of some great beast. The sun's light dimmed as the darkness spread, casting the land below in an eerie twilight.

"What is that?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

The figure's answer was simple and chilling: "The end."

The runes on the dais flared again, and the map beneath her hand began to glow brighter than ever. The ink shifted rapidly, forming a new path—a route leading deeper into the mountains, toward the source of the rising darkness

Aveline didn't hesitate. She grabbed the map and shoved it into her satchel, her mind racing. The rising darkness wasn't just a storm—it was alive, and if what the shadowy figure said was true, it marked the beginning of something catastrophic.

She turned back to the dais, where the shadows were now writhing, their forms destabilizing in the growing light. The towering figure remained solid, its piercing gaze fixed on her.

"You will not survive the journey," it said, its voice vibrating through the air. "Even the Lumina fell before the Shadow."

"The Lumina?" Aveline blurted, her heart skipping a beat. That was the name the sages had whispered in the stories of her childhood. The ancient guardians of light, protectors of balance… and a people who had disappeared centuries ago.

But the figure didn't answer her. Instead, it raised both arms, and the other shadows surged toward her in a wave of inky blackness.

Aveline acted on instinct. She darted to the side, narrowly avoiding the first wave, and sprinted toward the crumbling archway at the edge of the ruins. The shadows followed, their tendrils reaching out to grab her, their whispers clawing at her mind.

Her boots slipped on the frost-covered stones, and she stumbled, barely catching herself before she fell. One of the shadows seized the opportunity, its claw grazing her shoulder. A burning cold shot through her body, and she cried out, swinging her dagger wildly.

The blade connected, slicing through the shadow and dispersing it, but the cold lingered, making her arm feel heavy. She forced herself to keep moving, the archway growing closer with every step.

As she crossed the threshold, the humming from the dais reached a deafening pitch. A sudden burst of light erupted behind her, and she turned just in time to see the shadows dissolve, their forms consumed by the radiance.

The towering figure was the last to fall, its jagged form breaking apart into wisps of smoke. But as it faded, its voice echoed one final warning:

"You cannot escape the Shadow. It will find you, wherever you go."

Aveline collapsed to her knees outside the ruins, her chest heaving. The cold bite on her shoulder throbbed painfully, but she forced herself to focus. She pulled out the map, its glowing ink now stable and clear.

The new path it displayed led straight toward the heart of the Mistveil Mountains, to a location marked only by a single symbol: a spiral with radiating lines, the ancient sigil of the Lumina.

She stared at it, her mind reeling. The Lumina were real. The Shadow was real. And somehow, she was caught in the middle of a battle that had begun long before she was born.

For the first time in her life, Aveline felt truly out of her depth. But as fear clawed at the edges of her mind, she forced herself to stand.

Her mentor's voice echoed in her thoughts once more: "Maps don't just guide us. They challenge us to go beyond the edges of what we know."

With one last glance at the ruins, she turned toward the mountains and began her ascent. The Shadow was awake—and she would find the answers, no matter the cost
