Chapter 29: Frantically searching for Mishka
“I wasn’t exactly thinking about wolves because anyone can have super powers. But being a wolf could also be a reason,” Bruce responded to Lyle’s question.
“Then let’s imagine that the girl with the magic voice is a wolf, just for a minute,” Lyle suggested.
“Yes,” Bruce agreed as they sat there next to each other on the balcony, looking out into the night.
“But then, wouldn’t the other wolves here know about her?” he asked.
“You’re right. But, what if she just recently developed into a wolf? She’s still young, isn’t she?” Lyle responded.
“I don’t know exactly how young, but she’s definitely not a teenager,” Bruce responded with a pensive frown on his brow.
“She could be a late developer?” Lyle suggested.
“Alright then. What do I do about that? What if she’s a wolf and she came to my party in a disguise, but the other wolves here don’t know about her yet?” Bruce asked.
“Her parents would definitely have been wolves and the community would have been aware of them,” Lyle responded with a deep frown of contemplation on his brow.
“Unless they’re new to the neighbourhood and no one knows about them yet?” Bruce suggested.
“Yes, that could be it. But, aren’t they here for longer than you and you’ve already been recognized by the local wolf clan?” Lyle commented.
“You’re right there, unless they’re extremely secretive,” Bruce suggested, raising his eyebrows enquiringly.
“You could be right, but do you know how long she’s been living here for?” Lyle asked.
“We had a very brief conversation in the woods and I didn’t do research on her afterwards. The only thing I really know about her is her voice,” Bruce responded.
“And tonight you heard two masked girls speak but not sing,” Lyle remarked. “Maybe you should just be patient about this whole thing,” he concluded.
“Maybe you’re right. It would be very interesting if she could be a wolf though,” Bruce responded with a sigh.
“You mean it would be like having your wildest dreams fulfilled,” Lyle remarked, smiling with his brows lifted high.
“One can dream can’t one?” Bruce responded to the tease.
“Well, have a nice dream when you go to bed tonight. I’m personally calling it a night. Don’t worry because if you get to wait for her or for her mystery to unfold, you will appreciate and enjoy it much more than if everything happened within a few days,” Lyle advised as he rose from his seat.
“That’s true. Have a good night’s rest then,” Bruce responded with a slight wave.
Bruce looked at the empty plate on the small table in front of him. He could not believe that he had finished the snacks by himself.
“Then I’m really stressed about this,” he told himself. “I should forget about everything and pull myself together. There’s enough time to solve a mystery in the next few weeks,” he told himself.
He then got up from the bench and walked back into the small lounge. He walked into the hallway and stood still for a moment.
“I didn’t imagine hearing her voice earlier. It was her. But then she disappeared with her friend. Are they both wolves or magicians then? How can they be gone so quickly?” he asked himself.
Bruce then walked towards the dancehall and peeped in again. There were still a few dancers there, but no sign of the two masked girls.
“Then they did leave together,” he told himself. He then walked out of the house and to the parking area again. There was no sign of them there and the vehicles were now fewer than when he had looked earlier.
“What now? I’m too curious to let it go. They could have left while I was chatting with Lyle. Maybe they were elsewhere in the house the first time I looked and then left afterwards,” Bruce told himself, scratching his head.
“That makes more sense. Maybe they were admiring and exploring around and then left. But I still think there could be a chance of them being wolves.
It would be great if the singer was a wolf. What a great pair we would make,” Bruce thought with a smile on his face.
He then walked out to the gardens which spread out towards the beginning of the woods.
“The butlers can play host to those dancers and models in there. I’m going to satisfy my curiosity,” he told himself when he stood at the edge of the gardens. He looked back at the towering house behind him.
“I wonder how many mysteries occurred here tonight that I might never know about?” he murmured.
He then turned around and ran out of the small garden gate and into the woods. As his speed picked up he began to feels his clothes grow tight against his body which was expending. He could sense his muscles grow stronger as he ran and then his clothes began to break free from his body as the fur began to replace them.
Bruce felt strong and invincible now that he knew that he was transformed into his higher self. The only part of him which remained unchanged was his curiosity about the singer who had apparently vanished from his mansion tonight.
“She must have run this same way through the garden if she changed into wolf form,” Bruce told himself as he flashed through the woods with his breath coming through his nostrils in heavy snorts due to his speed.
He stopped when he felt that he had run enough.
“Will I be able to get her sent if she’s out here as a wolf?” he asked himself. “Will she be able to recognize me?” he wondered.
He remembered how he had changed into his wolf form after meeting her and how he had stared after her from a distance yesterday.
It had been a heart stopping moment for him in his wolf form when she had apparently sensed him staring after her and turned around to return the stare.
Bruce had then run in a circle around the woods after she walked on, hoping to run into her on the other side of the woods, but he had not been that lucky. She had apparently disappeared into a house somewhere on the other end.
Now he hoped that he could find her as a wolf.
“What will I do if she’s not one after all?” he asked himself as he stood still in a clearing in the woods. “Why am I so eager for her to be a wolf after all the people that I’ve met in my life so far?” he asked inwardly as he looked up at the bright shining moon.
