chapter 8
8 – Spoon in the Drawer (7)
The earset is a communication device designed to be able to contact the command center at any time during battle. It is mainly used to report the situation on the field or receive instructions for changed operations.
In battle, various variables inevitably occur. The set plans could go awry, or completely different situations could arise from the pre-briefing.
That’s why the earset can be said to be the second most important equipment after weapons.
But.
That precious earset.
I asked Arna to take it off.
“You’re telling me to take off the earset… Are you joking? Can’t you see? There’s a monster right in front of us!”
“I’m not joking. I’m more serious than ever.”
To show that I was also sincere, I took off the earset I was wearing and plugged in the earplugs.
It’s been a long time since I wore them since my reserve training.
“Why do I have to take off the earset and wear the earplugs?”
Even with my ears covered, I could still hear clearly when spoken to up close. I spoke in this state.
“Decaravia will soon start singing. If you directly listen to that song, you’ll instantly enter Dreamland.”
“Sleep magic… a variant.”
“Yes, that’s right. Do you believe me now?”
However, Arna shook her head.
“No, it’s even more suspicious. How did you know it’s a variant?”
“Because I’m the director in charge. I wrote the story myself.”
But boasting like this to Arna probably wouldn’t work. It would only make the story more complicated.
So, I shamelessly made up a story.
“My ancestors told me in a dream.”
Arna scratched her face for a moment. What is this nonsense?
But it didn’t bother me at all. I’ve often faced that expression in the company, mostly from the art director.
“Well, you have to risk something to gain something. If it’s not a variant, we can disconnect the earset then. I don’t see any risk.”
“Then why are you sharing this information only with me?”
Arna argued that I could explain it to others as well.
At first, I thought so too. But it wasn’t that simple. No one listened to me.
So, I hung on to Arna with the hope of convincing at least one person.
“I’ve been running around all day trying to convince you, Arna. I even bought women’s underwear for the first time. There was no time to involve anyone else.”
“Then why me? You could have chosen someone else.”
“Because it’s something only you can do, Arna.”
I held Arna’s hand, placing the earplug in her soft palm.
“You’re the hero everyone is watching. I’m counting on you. You might be able to bring down Decarabia in one blow.”
Arna stared at the earplug in her palm, contemplating until the very end.
Afterward, as if concluding all her thoughts, Arna took a deep breath.
“Phew. I’ll do it. Just tell me what to do.”
Arna boldly removed the earset she was wearing and put on the earplug.
She agreed to listen to me.
“If it’s not a variant, I’ll be really angry. I won’t even talk to you in the future.”
“In that case, I’ll buy you a drink.”
“Drink… sounds good. I’ll have the most expensive Cognac at the bar then.”
Due to the wind stealing time here, our departure was delayed. Other Awakened beings had already approached Decarabia, including journalists.
We were the only ones lagging behind.
“Let’s go before it’s too late.”
As I lifted my foot, far in the distance, the giant demon Decarabia opened its mouth.
Is it trying to summon another monster?
Thunk—
No, this time it was slightly different from before. Nothing emerged from its mouth as it did last time.
From this, I could sense that Decarabia was about to sing.
aaah!
It was an enormous roar. At this level, it was more like noise than a song. Even with earplugs, my head was throbbing.
Both of us had to close our eyes and block our ears.
“Remarkable singing ability. It seems like Decarabia’s roar is even more massive than yours, Arna. Shall we compare?”
“More nonsense. Is this the time for such talk, really? If you have time for that, then hurry up… uh…?”
Suddenly, Arna turned her gaze forward and shook her shoulders in surprise. There, a completely different scene unfolded from before.
Awakened beings, drained of strength and collapsed, journalists dropping their camera equipment, and even those who valued their lives more than anything were starting to doze off—all in front of Decarabia.
“Really… mutants…?”
We were the only ones conscious here. Only the two of us, wearing earplugs, could escape the trap.
“Arna, hurry. Its mouth is still open.”
Decarabia still had its mouth wide open. New monsters began to appear one by one from inside its mouth.
“No…! We can’t… until everyone is saved…!”
“Saving everyone? Do you think you can save everyone alone?”
The creatures that appeared now were not just one or two. They emerged in groups.
Of course, Arna could easily suppress such creatures on her own.
But the problem was not with the monsters; it was elsewhere.
The people who had lost consciousness and fallen. The condition to fight while protecting them was added.
Fighting and protecting something are entirely different challenges.
It’s not like everyone is gathered in one place; they are scattered all over the place.
Even if Arna runs around busily, there will undoubtedly be gaps somewhere.
“Are you suggesting we give up on those people now?”
“He never uttered a word telling me to give up. Just changing the approach a bit.”
He pulled out a spoon from the jacket pocket.
Then, using the enlargement function, he increased its size.
“Arna, get on this spoon right now.”
“Um… What is this about?”
“If you want to save everyone, believe in me and get on this spoon,” he said, forcibly placing Arna on the head of the spoon.
Arna still seemed bewildered, not fully grasping the situation.
“We don’t have time, so I’ll explain only once. From now on, this spoon is heading for Decarabia’s head.”
Swooosh—
Simultaneously with the explanation, he exerted all his strength on the spoon. Soon, the spoon floated into the air.
“What, what is this…! Could this spoon even fly in the sky?”
***
“Arna, hurry and shatter the gem that caught his eyes. Then the monsters will naturally stop moving.”
Arna shouted loudly at the absurd plan of Shinyunseong.
“Wait a minute! What about you? You’re going to be left alone!”
The only weapon, a spoon, was given to Arna. Shinyunseong was practically naked. He was perfect prey for the monsters.
“Don’t worry. My life is tougher than a cockroach. Arna, you should know that by now.”
Since last year until now, there have been 23 evaluation matches between Shinyunseong and Arna. The results were, of course, all victories for Shinyunseong.
After losing so many times, one might consider quitting… But Shinyunseong didn’t give up. The next day, the day after that, without a break, he challenged Arna.
No matter how many times he was pushed away, Shinyunseong didn’t back down. He stuck to Arna, annoying her.
Wherever she went, he always pursued Arna. He was the first villain like this in her life.
The more she thought about it, the more annoying he became.
“And, as I said earlier, I’m counting on you. As proof of trust, entrust your life to me.”
However.
The villain who had been nothing but annoying.
Now, he believed in Arna more than anyone else. He even handed over the spoon, like it was his everything. He staked his life on it.
He sacrificed everything.
“Go, Arna. Completely destroy him and come back.”
“Wait, just a moment…! It’s not over yet…!”
The spoon rose higher than before. It was so high that it couldn’t reach the hands of the demon. In that state, it passed by the swarm of demons and went straight towards Decaravia.
Whooosh─
A cold wind fiercely scraped against Arna’s skin. It was so intense that she couldn’t even open her eyes properly.
“Ugh, what is going on since earlier…! Out of the blue, telling me to put on the earplugs…! Telling me to ride on the spoon…!”
Everything was filled with things she couldn’t understand. How did she know that it was a mutated species? She had also noticed that it used dream magic.
She had said that Ancestor informed her in a dream… but it was still an unbelievable story. She was definitely hiding something.
“Seriously…!”
But even if she thought about it deeper here, her head would only become more complicated for no reason. Now is not the time to hang on to that.
Countless lives are at stake.
Useless thoughts should be discarded.
Only focus on the situation in front of you.
─aaah!
Before she knew it, she had approached Decaravia. The monster sang another eerie song.
“That no longer works!”
Thanks to the earplugs Shin Yoon-seong gave her, thanks to this spoon, she was able to come this far.
Now is the moment to repay that sacrifice.
Crash─!
She jumped high using the spoon as a springboard. At the same time, she gathered all her magical power. So that it could be condensed within this sword.
Sssssss─
According to Arna’s command, the sword began to emit light. Like the stars rising in the night sky, it beautifully adorned this dark night.
“Haa…!”
Arna accurately identified the landing point. She then fell towards Decaravia, carrying all the weight on her body.
“That filthy mouth…!”
The target was the red gem embedded in Decaravia’s torso. With all her strength, she extended the sword towards it.
“Stop it already…!”
Crack─!
The golden sword pierced right in the center of the gem. The monster emitted light from its eyes and mouth, then quickly lost its power and collapsed to the ground.
It was the moment when everything came to an end.
