Chapter 234 - The Divine Cat Mii-chan, Requests to the Fairy Tribe

Chapter 234: The Divine Cat Mii-chan, Requests to the Fairy Tribe

The next day, I flew to Garo’s cave with Sumire and headed to the nearest village on the Forte side. I had the villagers take me to the village chief and told him that I was there to gather people for road maintenance on the kingdom’s orders, just to listen to what he had to say.

As expected, the village chief was reluctant. He said that with the upcoming harvest season, people would be busy, and even with guards, no villager would willingly venture deep into Brocken Mountain. Although it might be possible to enforce it using the lord’s authority, I don’t want to create unnecessary friction.

I also visited a village on the Nixe side and received the same response. This shows just how much fear surrounds Brocken Mountain. The perception that it’s a place where the Demon King once lived is still strong.

Maybe I should consult Pat about this?

“Mii-chan, Nero, welcome!”

As usual, Pat’s ears were fluffy. I fought the urge to touch them and greeted him with a smile.

“Hello, Pat.”

“Mii~”

Mii-chan, however, seemed oblivious to my inner struggle and was already rubbing and nibbling on Pat’s ears. I was jealous…

I told Pat about becoming a noble and that Brocken Mountain was now part of my territory.

“A noble, huh? Should I say congratulations?”

“Hmm, I wonder.”

“Mii?”

We all tilted our heads, unsure how to feel.

“Oh, right! About the caravan escort, a lot of people volunteered!”

“That’s great! It would be nice if they gradually got used to the town.”

“Yes, this is the first step.”

Looks like the caravan escort situation is sorted out. Now, we need to create a place for the fairies to live next to the Beruna estate.

“So, what brings you here today?”

“Well, about that…”

I explained the road maintenance issue to Pat while grilling fish. For some reason, a group of drooling kobold children were staring intently at the grilled fish. Since I needed to talk to Pat, I handed the fish to a kobold woman to grill.

“I see. We can help with that. If everyone pitches in, it’ll be done quickly.”

“May I rely on you for that?”

“Leave it to us!”

“Mii~”

And so, I gratefully accepted Pat’s offer. We discussed the details of the maintenance and what tools would be needed. According to Pat, not much was required—just axes, machetes, and carts to transport the cut wood. Many fairies possess earth skills, so they’ll take care of the road, including existing paths. Since I also have earth skills, I’d like to study how they do it.

After finalizing the details with Pat, I left some fish as a gift and returned to Beruna. I went around town buying the necessary tools like axes and machetes. However, I noticed that there were no pointed shovels for sale. There were small spades, but no large ones. It seems the legend of the mighty pointed shovel doesn’t exist in this world. Should I make one? If so, I’ll need a dedicated blacksmith. It has to be that person. I’ll bring them along the next time I visit the labyrinth, no matter what.

The next day, I dropped off the tools at Pat’s place. Since I couldn’t find a cart for transporting the cut wood, I asked them to pile it to the side for now, and Mii-chan and I would collect it later. The wood is of good quality, so there will be plenty of uses for it.

Pat had already gathered other fairies, and they would start work tomorrow. As for the payment, they asked for supplies rather than money. It seems they prefer practical items like fabric, thread, and tableware. Human-made goods are convenient and easy to use, so they’re quite popular. I told them to make a list of what they wanted since we have plenty of funds.

A messenger from the Beruna Commercial Guild arrived, asking me to come and settle the festival’s accounts, so Mii-chan and I headed there.

At the guild, instead of the usual business seats, we were shown to a private room, where tea and sweets were served. Soon after, the usual representative and the guild master arrived.

“Ah, Baron of Brocken, welcome!”

“Mii~”

As expected, the Commercial Guild is quick with information. It’s only been a few days since my barony was officially announced.

“To think you’ve become a baron! The rise of the Divine Cat Trading Company is something our Commercial Guild greatly admires.”

With these flattering words, they presented me with some papers and a bag of money. I checked the contents of the documents, signed them, and handed them back.

“The festival was a spectacular event. Even His Majesty praised it as a great success. We can’t thank you enough, Baron of Brocken. Please, if there’s anything our guild can do for you, don’t hesitate to ask.”

The festival not only celebrated our recent victory over the rebels, but it also eased the people’s anxieties following the rebellion. From the king’s perspective, it was the perfect event to capitalize on. The queen had expressed similar sentiments.

Finally! I’ve been waiting for this moment. Time to take them up on their offer. I flashed the guild master my best smile. Of course, Mii-chan, our representative, also gave a dazzling smile.

“Well then, I do have a few requests…”

“Mii~”
