chapter 45 - Mii-chan Interacts with the Stray Cats
Chapter 45: Mii-chan Interacts with the Stray Cats
When I woke up in the morning, I had a headache and felt nauseous…
It seems I was unwittingly given alcohol last night. I drank some mineral water. Recovery! Hahaha! Just kidding. I’ll save alcohol for when I’m twenty…
I picked up Mii-chan, who had just woken up, and went down to the dining area… Why are you all here?
Everyone from “Roar of the Blue Dragon” was gathered and having breakfast.
After ordering my own breakfast and listening to the story, it turned out that the men had continued drinking after I went back to my room and ended up sleeping here. The women had come for breakfast. The “Roar of the Blue Dragon” group rents a home nearby but usually has their meals here.
They planned to go to the dissection area behind the Hunter’s Guild to dissect monsters and exchange the spoils they had collected. I’m interested in dissection, but since I have an appointment with Zelgad-san, I’ll save the visit for another time.
After finishing breakfast, I took care of Sumire at the Hunter’s Guild and then headed to Zelgad-san’s workshop with Mii-chan.
“I’ve been waiting…”
Zelgad-san looked somewhat worn out, with dark circles under his eyes.
“Mii~?”
Even Mii-chan seemed worried, tilting her head as if asking if everything was okay.
In the backyard, two cylinders were prepared just like last time. The cylinders were now made of a shiny black metal and looked sturdier than before.
They’ve changed, and they look significantly sturdier than before.
“You can see for yourself that I’ve changed the material. It’s made from a metal that’s among the hardest I know of. As a result, polishing it was very difficult. I had to experiment and make various improvements to finish it. There shouldn’t be any air leaks now.”
Oh, that’s impressive confidence. Let’s proceed with the experiment.
“And there’s one more thing.”
Oh, really? There’s more.
“I’ve also redesigned the loading part and the bullets.”
Zelgad-san handed me four bullets. Two of them were the same as before, but the new ones seemed slightly lighter. The rear part was now made of a soft metal, similar to lead, instead of wax.
“After you left last time, I looked at the bullets that were embedded in the board and made some improvements.”
The hollow-point bullets have been lightened and given better propulsion by hollowing out a bit of the center from the back. Since the wax could crumble when fully dry, it was replaced with a thin layer of soft metal. The rifle bullets have been made from hard metal, but they’re also hollowed out, making them slightly lighter than before.
Additionally, improvements were made to the bullet loading section, where the part with soft metal was slightly widened to create a snug fit.
Hmm, Zelgad, you’re quite impressive.
The inside of the cylinder also shows that the rifling is properly engraved.
Now, let’s start the experiment. Mii-chan, please stay in the carrier bag.
“Meow…”
“Zelgad-san, where’s the shield?”
“No need for it.”
Seriously? You have that much confidence? You’re not just naturally high from lack of sleep, are you?
“Hurry up and do it!”
Okay. I’ll start with the shorter one. The bullets are hollow-point bullets.
Whoosh, bang!
Whoa, amazing. There’s no air leak, so it flew at an incredible speed. The bullets hit almost exactly where aimed, destroying the ten stacked boards significantly and stopping against the brick at the back.
Now, let’s try the longer barrel.
Whoosh, thud!
The bullet made a clean hole right in the center of the stacked board target. It penetrated through the board, through the first brick, and stopped at the second brick. Quite impressive penetration.
Next, I tried using different bullets. With the shorter barrel and a rifle bullet, it penetrated through the board and embedded itself in the first brick. With the longer barrel and a hollow-point bullet, it significantly damaged the board and made a large hole in the first brick, stopping midway.
From the results, the longer barrel provides more power and accuracy. As expected, the hollow-point bullets excel at causing damage, while the rifle bullets are superior in penetration.
“How is it? Any issues?”
“How about the weight?”
“You should take them off the stand and hold them.”
I took off both barrels and held them.
“They’re lighter than I expected.”
“Now, I’ll make the complete set with a cylinder. I’ll attach wooden handles to the shorter barrel and wooden parts to the longer barrel and the rear. It should be considerably lighter. However, this metal is expensive. This is just a prototype, so I used a lower-quality material, but I want to make a good one if it’s for production. How much can you spend?”
“How much for the prototype?”
“120,000 Ret. I’ll include 50 rounds for each type of bullet. How does that sound?”
“Got it. Please go ahead with it. Also, please make as many bullets as you can separately, and I’d like the bullet molds as well so I can have them made in other cities.”
“Understood. I’ll prepare them. Is a deadline of ten days okay?”
“As I’ll be staying in this city for a while, a slight extension won’t be a problem.”
“Got it. I’ll bring them to the Hunter’s Guild if they’re ready.”
“Understood. I’m usually there after the evening. If I’m not, leave a message with the Head Coordinator, Eva, and I’ll come by later.”
“Understood. Sorry, but I need half of the payment upfront…”
“That’s fine.”
Without the maze exploration earnings, it might have been tough… I’ll judge after seeing the results. After all, I can’t say much until I actually use them.
Afterward, we discussed the finer details. It seems that Mii-chan is socializing with the local stray cats in a sunny spot. Since she’s being groomed, I don’t think she’s being bullied. If something were wrong, she’d come to me.
The warm sunlight and the cheerful meows of Mii-chan and the strays create a pleasant atmosphere. Days like this are nice.
“Meow…”
