Chapter 54 - Theory Class (Part 1)
Well, the food is quite tasty.
Jiang Hui had already started eating, but it was clear that they didn’t actually intend for them to sit down and have a proper meal. It was probably just a token gesture… because she hadn’t even finished her first piece when the entire conference hall had quieted down, as it seemed that the staff in charge of the course had entered.
She watched the orderly procession of adults in the front row, a large group entering and finding their seats. After a brief period of noise, the employees from the organizing group hurried around, making the final arrangements, and someone closed the front door.
The lights in the conference hall seemed to be instantly brightened, making the entire space suddenly illuminated and silent, so quiet that even the sound of something dropping to the floor could probably be heard.
The interstellar people were quite obedient and efficient, and the various layers of the crowd cooperated well with the work, allowing such a large-scale event to settle down so quickly. In contrast, it would probably take a citizens’ assembly back on Blue Star to achieve this level of efficiency.
Jiang Hui naturally put the half-eaten snack back in the box and, like everyone else around her, straightened up to show respect.
“Hello everyone.” Suddenly, a young man’s voice rang out from an unknown direction.
Before she could look up to find the source, she saw the strange metallic panels at the front of the workstation suddenly flip open, projecting a large, clear image out of thin air.
Jiang Hui instinctively tightened her grip behind her back and leaned back slightly, feeling a sense of unease. The sudden appearance of the light screen had indeed startled her.
However, perhaps because she had already gotten used to the various uniquely functional high-tech products in the interstellar realm, she quickly calmed down this time, her expression unchanged, and began to seriously examine this thing she had never seen before.
This was somewhat like a three-dimensional projection made of light particles, with the base for projection likely being the ring of metal embedded in front of the workstation. Once projected, it surrounded the entire workstation, displaying a three-dimensional image that was quite clear.
No wonder, in such a large conference hall, the organizers were not worried that people in the back would be unable to see or hear the course; it seemed they had accurately targeted each seat.
Just a moment of distraction, and Jiang Hui’s attention returned to the image of the young man who had spoken first.
After capturing everyone’s attention, he welcomed everyone on behalf of the group. He then introduced himself as a council member from the Dongbo branch responsible for this hands-on mecha experience class. Without further ado, he presented a brief summary of important matters, which included reminders such as “maintain silence during the event,” “do not wander around casually during the activity,” and “be cautious for your safety.”
Essentially, he almost emphasized that all the children should pay attention to safety and avoid any dangerous operations. From this, one could already infer the nature of the event, as even the organizers were well aware of the primary audience for this course.
But since she was already here, there was no need to get too hung up on it. Although she hadn’t paid any registration fee, the transportation costs from her apartment to the first ring were not low, and she would be spending a whole day here.
Moreover, if she were to say it outright, Jiang Hui’s understanding of mechas might even be less than that of the children present, so there was no reason to feel embarrassed about attending such a class. She couldn’t just come for nothing, could she?! She would study hard; it would be worth it.
Thinking this way, Jiang Hui quickly joined the other participants in the public course.
The hands-on mecha experience class was actually divided into two parts. One part was theoretical, which was essentially educational outreach, and the other part was the practical operation segment, which was the final hands-on mecha assembly.
Jiang Hui was more interested in the latter, but the former was equally the part she needed to understand most at this stage.
It was said that there would be three teachers to lecture on the theoretical part. One was a professor from the permanent Mecha Association, who was responsible for explaining the major weapon transformations since humanity entered the interstellar era and how mechas came into being.
However, this professor looked quite old, and his teaching style matched his age, carrying a heavy and even dull feeling. Many of the children in the conference hall had difficulty staying focused, but for those studying mechas, it was still a required course. If they were able to attend higher education institutions in the future, they would have to complete this course to graduate. Right now, it was just an early exposure; not a loss.
Jiang Hui, on the other hand, was listening with great interest. She didn’t find it dull because this was exactly what she needed to understand. This subject already involved the history of human interstellar development, but the professor focused more on analyzing humanity’s developmental needs and how these needs and conflicts drove and promoted the birth of mechas.
The content in this part, which was somewhat like an outline, was still too dull, so the organizers did not schedule too much time for explanations and only gave a rough overview. Ultimately, they concluded this segment under Jiang Hui’s eager gaze, leaving her wanting more.
It was quite a pity.
Jiang Hui decided that she would look for relevant books to read when she got back to make up for the regret of not having fully engaged in the lecture.
The second part of the class was conducted by a professional woman who appeared to be very straightforward in both her appearance and demeanor. She was said to be an experienced intermediate mecha engineer from the local mecha engineer association.
The ranking of interstellar mecha engineers is quite simple: there are three levels—junior, intermediate, and senior. However, the capabilities of mecha engineers cannot be distinguished solely by these levels.
Typically, young people who have just graduated from school can only qualify as junior mecha engineers. Even if they are talented, their lack of experience and qualifications prevents them from immediately advancing to the next level.
Those who genuinely wish to take the exam but lack the necessary qualifications can only continue to qualify for the intermediate mecha engineer exam if they receive a special recommendation from a senior mecha engineer. This regulation seems quite archaic, but it has been an ironclad rule maintaining the normal operation of the Mecha Engineer Association for several centuries, and few have been able to break it.
Intermediate mecha engineers make up the largest group among all qualified mecha engineers in the interstellar community, and they possess the most solid foundation. Most of these engineers have strong fundamentals, rich experience, and sufficient professional qualifications.
As for obtaining the title of senior mecha engineer, it is not something that can be casually achieved. The vast majority of people outside the profession are still unaware of the standards and methods for obtaining this qualification.
Those who hold the title of senior mecha engineer are often already well-known even before obtaining this qualification.
It can be said that senior mecha engineers are associated with terms like “renowned” and “master.” Not a single senior mecha engineer is unknown or obscure.
