Chapter 286: The Price of Growing Stronger
Eriri casually snapped her fingers with her right hand, and instantly, the entire world began rewinding along its original trajectory.
The fragments of the shattered planet scattered across the cosmos rapidly reassembled, returning to form a pristine blue world.
Within moments, everything returned to the exact second before Eriri had stomped her foot, erasing the memory of the ten-second apocalypse from the minds of all living beings on the planet. No one had any recollection of their world having been destroyed.
However, Evileye and the others, who had been protected by Eriri's magic, retained their memories. They vividly recalled the apocalyptic scene they had just witnessed.
The group now found themselves back at the adventurer's inn, seated once again at the large round table in the far corner of the first floor. This time, however, there was one more person with them—Milim, who hadn't been returned to her original location by the time reversal. Eriri had intentionally kept her in the present.
"It's… restored?!" Gagaran and Tia, along with Tina, had snapped out of their daze just as time began rewinding. Seeing everything around them return from nothingness, they briefly wondered if they had just woken from a terrible nightmare.
But the vivid memories in their minds told them otherwise—it had all been real.
"Eriri, you scared the hell out of me!" Gagaran shot a nervous glance at Eriri. Her previous easygoing demeanor was nowhere to be found. She now feared that if Eriri grew displeased, she might destroy the world again.
Her muscular face took on a contemplative expression as she added, "But still, this is your real power? To casually destroy an entire world and just as easily restore it? It's unbelievable. If I hadn't experienced it myself, I would never have believed something so absurd."
The event had completely shattered her worldview. Where once she had taken pride in being a mithril-rank adventurer, now she realized how insignificant her strength truly was.
Eriri didn't refute her. To Gagaran and her companions, the difference between destroying a planet and an entire universe was moot—both were utterly beyond their comprehension.
Evileye silently observed Eriri for a few moments. Recalling a decision she had made earlier, she hesitated briefly before timidly tugging on Eriri's sleeve.
"Eriri, I have a request."
"Oh? Let's hear it," Eriri said, raising an eyebrow with interest.
"I know I'll never be strong enough to avenge myself. So... I want to ask you to kill the Elder Coffin Dragon Lord for me," Evileye said, her crimson eyes filled with a pleading light. "As payment, I'll agree to any condition you name."
"Who said you can't avenge yourself?" Eriri's voice carried a note of amusement as her lips curled into a mysterious smile. "Wouldn't it be far more satisfying to slay the Elder Coffin Dragon Lord with your own hands?"
"But my strength hasn't improved in years," Evileye said, her tone tinged with hopelessness. "In over two centuries, I've barely managed to reach level 50. I'm almost half the Dragon Lord's level. There's no way I can win."
Desperation clung to her voice. If there were any other way, she wouldn't have sought revenge through someone else's hands.
"No, no, no..." Eriri wagged her index finger playfully before Evileye's face. "You're asking for my help, right? I never said I wouldn't help. Instead of killing the Elder Coffin Dragon Lord for you, why not help you grow strong enough to do it yourself? Of course, if you insist, I can kill him for you right now. I already know where he's hiding. Just say the word, and he'll be gone forever."
Hearing this, Evileye's eyes lit up with hope. She eagerly grabbed Eriri's hand, her face alight with joy. Without hesitation, she declared, "I want to become stronger so I can avenge myself!"
It wasn't a hard choice. Given the chance to grow stronger herself, why would she hesitate?
With her decision made, Eriri wasted no time. She reached out, placing a finger on Evileye's forehead and implanting an energy seed into her body.
"All done," Eriri said with a soft laugh, withdrawing her hand and playfully tapping the tip of Evileye's nose.
"You should feel a warm energy coursing through your body now. That's your key to growing stronger. If you put in the effort, it won't be long before you surpass the world's level cap of 100 and enter an entirely new realm. After that, defeating the Elder Coffin Dragon Lord will be child's play."
Evileye closed her eyes, focusing on the changes within her body. The icy cold she had lived with for over two centuries—characteristic of her undead nature—was melting away, replaced by a comforting warmth.
The energy within her, gifted by Eriri, felt as though she was being enveloped in a gentle embrace.
Unlike other vampires such as Arifureta or Shinobu, Overlord vampires were a form of undead. Their bodies lacked warmth, and their hearts did not beat.
"Thank you, Eriri. Truly, thank you," Evileye said, her voice thick with gratitude.
"No need to thank me just yet," Eriri replied with a sly smile. "After all, I'm not helping you for free. Let's talk about the price."
Her tone carried the same mischievous charm as a wolf luring Red Riding Hood into a trap. But Evileye, oblivious to any hidden motives, simply nodded earnestly. Even if she had noticed, she might not have cared.
"Of course. That's only fair. Tell me what you want, Eriri. Whatever it is, if it's within my power, I'll do it. Even if it isn't, I'll find a way," Evileye promised, her crimson eyes burning with determination.
"Well then..." Eriri's smile grew even brighter, and she leaned in closer. "From this day forward, you'll be my third exclusive maid. Your life is now mine."
"Eh?" Evileye blinked, her brain struggling to process what she had just heard. When she confirmed she hadn't misheard, her face turned a deep shade of red. "EH?!"
Her startled cry echoed through the sparsely populated inn. Thankfully, there weren't many patrons, or the place would have been in an uproar.
"You want me... to be a maid?" Evileye asked dumbfoundedly.
"That's right. My exclusive maid," Eriri said with a nod, her smile as radiant as ever.
Evileye fell silent, her expression conflicted. She couldn't deny a small part of her felt... intrigued by the idea. As shocking as Eriri's condition was, a tiny sliver of her heart anticipated what life as Eriri's maid might be like.
But...
Evileye turned her gaze toward Gagaran, Tia, and Tina, who were equally shocked but too cautious to interrupt.
Although her time with Blue Rose hadn't been long, especially when compared to her two centuries of existence, she had formed deep bonds with the other members. If she were to become Eriri's exclusive maid, it would mean leaving Blue Rose—something she was reluctant to do.
As she hesitated, torn between the decision, Eriri's voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Don't worry. I won't force you to leave Blue Rose. Here's a compromise: you'll be able to return to this world once every week, and you can stay for a full weekend each time. How does that sound?"
Hearing Eriri's suggestion, Gagaran forgot her fear momentarily and blurted out, "Wait, return to this world? Are you saying you're not from this world?"
Tia and Tina, equally stunned, shared her astonishment. This was the most shocking revelation of the day.
"Of course. Except for Arche and her two sisters, none of us are from this world. Didn't I mention that before?" Eriri tilted her head slightly, looking genuinely surprised.
"You absolutely did not!" shouted Gagaran, her tone mirrored by Tia and Tina, who also exclaimed softly.
Evileye, however, seemed contemplative. Instead of answering Eriri's question immediately, she asked, "Eriri, are you 'players' from Yggdrasil?"
She had long suspected Eriri and her companions might be players from Yggdrasil. However, after witnessing Eriri's casual ability to obliterate a planet, she had begun doubting that theory. While she had some knowledge of Yggdrasil and its players, her past battles alongside the Thirteen Heroes taught her that their power didn't extend to such godlike feats.
Eriri decisively shook her head. "Nope, we're not."
Still reeling from Eriri's otherworldly origins, Gagaran blinked in confusion at the unfamiliar terms. "Evileye, what is this Yggdrasil? And what are players? I feel completely lost here…"
After a moment's thought, Evileye decided there was no need to hide the information and explained everything she knew about Yggdrasil and its players.
Gagaran, Tia, and Tina were left dumbfounded by the revelations.
"So the Six Great Gods and the Eight Greed Kings were otherworlders? Seriously, Evileye, why didn't you tell us this sooner?" Gagaran complained.
"If you're that curious, you can go ask that old woman Rigrit. She knows a lot more than I do," Evileye retorted, shooting her a glance.
She then turned her attention back to Eriri, her expression serious.
"Eriri, I accept your terms. We agreed that I'd fulfill any condition you set, and I won't go back on my word. From now on, I am your exclusive maid. Please take good care of me," she declared solemnly.
As if suddenly remembering something, she added, "Now that I've agreed, should I start addressing you as 'Lady Eriri,' or should I call you 'Master' instead?"
As a former princess, Evileye had grown up with maids attending to her. Although her memories of them were a little blurry, she distinctly remembered her personal maid, Nastasha, addressing her as "Lady Keno."
The long-forgotten memories stirred within her, reigniting her determination to exact revenge.
"In my household, titles don't matter much. Call me whatever you like," Eriri replied playfully, winking at Evileye. "Of course, if you insist on calling me 'Master,' I wouldn't mind. Ehe~"
Although Eriri's words were casual, in practice, her other maids, like Aoi Kujo and Athena, always addressed her respectfully.
That said, Eriri truly didn't care much about titles. Even if Aoi and Athena were to address her by name, she wouldn't mind. To her, while they were maids, they were also important family members.
"In that case, I'll call you 'Lady Eriri' from now on," Evileye decided earnestly. "As a maid, I should behave like one. I'm not entirely sure how to fulfill this role yet, but I'll do my best to learn."
It was clear that Evileye genuinely embraced her role as Eriri's exclusive maid—not out of obligation, but because she truly accepted it.
Aoi Kujo called Eriri "Milady," and Athena addressed her as "Master." With Evileye now using "Lady Eriri," each of her three maids had their own unique form of address, lending an air of distinctiveness to their roles.
Gagaran, Tia, and Tina refrained from commenting on Evileye's decision. They could tell she wasn't being coerced. If they'd suspected otherwise, no matter how terrifying Eriri was, they would have stepped in to stop her.
Moreover, Evileye wasn't truly leaving Blue Rose. Even with her new arrangement, it didn't seem much different from before. They weren't always on missions, and as a mithril-rank adventurer team, Blue Rose often spent long stretches resting in the capital.
As a result, Evileye's new role as Eriri's maid wouldn't significantly affect Blue Rose.
In fact, Gagaran found herself envious. If becoming a maid offered an opportunity to break through the level 100 barrier, she wouldn't hesitate to agree.
The same thought occurred to Tia and Tina, whose gazes filled with envy as they looked at Evileye.
"Uh, Eriri…" Gagaran began hesitantly, her tone tinged with reluctance. "If I was willing to pay any price, could you help me increase my strength too?"
Her boldness gave Tia and Tina a glimmer of hope. Both of them fixed their identical gazes on Eriri, waiting eagerly for her answer.
However, Eriri's response quickly dashed their expectations.
"Nope. Honestly, none of you have anything I want."
