chapter 7
7 – Episode 7: Wolfgang
After Adewus’s head exploded, Wolfgang quickly assessed the situation.
Many thoughts raced through his mind about how to deal with the traitors beyond the tent.
Queen Rosalia, Engineer Chaewon-so, Mage Casey, Elf Tendrial, and the Paladin Haganess…
While all were formidable in their skills, they posed no challenge to the unrestrained Wolfgang.
Should he obliterate the entire palace?
Or should he release a toxic cloud into the tent, inflicting agonizing death?
Amidst considering various cruel revenge methods, Wolfgang’s eyes fell upon the fallen Adewus.
The poorest son of a farmer, the most unremarkable candidate among the candidates for the heroes.
He had become a hero because he possessed something that other candidates did not have.
At that time, Wolfgang thought it was something noble and lofty like a sense of justice that others lacked.
Even after Adewus became a hero, Wolfgang was convinced that his judgment had not been wrong.
However, it was only now, in this situation, that he realized the ‘something’ he possessed, different from other candidates, was ‘ambition’.
Approaching the body of his former pupil, Wolfgang let out a deep sigh.
“Ugh… What a mess this is.”
As the tense situation passed, the boiling anger began to subside gradually.
“I taught never to let your guard down… but anyhow, they never listen subtly.”
Tears welled up in Wolfgang’s eyes as he looked down at the contorted face.
“Damn… What’s so important about that petty power…”
What was it for?
Humanity had ultimately survived the devils.
Was that not enough?
Was it insufficient to simply live peacefully according to the lifespan given by the gods and quietly meet death in the arms of loved ones?
Everything had become tiresome.
Any great achievement felt meaningless.
As emptiness settled in his heart, the burning desire for revenge naturally softened.
Was there a need for revenge?
Rosalía is an outstanding ruler.
She transformed the feeble state of Terosa into a superpower seizing the opportunity of war—an extraordinary figure.
She, who managed the country as if foreseeing the future with her fragile appearance, was practically everything to Terosa.
Even if she were to be burnt and torn to death, wouldn’t this emptiness just repeat itself?
It was as obvious as daylight that significant turmoil would strike the unified humanity under Terosa after her death.
Then, what was the revenge for, after all?
The remaining members of the faction were no different.
Would anything change besides the increasing bodies Wolfgang had to bury?
So, he couldn’t step into that tent right now, not at all.
Even with a cooled mind, things didn’t easily fall into place.
“I don’t know. In times like this, let’s handle what’s in front of us first.”
Wolfgang rolled up his sleeves and started searching the warrior’s body.
Various precious gems and metals first found their way into his pockets.
“Seems like my hands still remember poverty.”
Realizing he instinctively picked up items of value, Wolfgang chuckled softly, muttering to himself.
While continuing to search the warrior’s pockets, Wolfang found several notes deep inside the inner pocket of the clothes.
As he unfolded the crinkled papers, it turned out to be a kind of contract detailing the circumstances under which his comrades had betrayed him.
“Ugh… these bastards…”
It was a reason beyond absurdity.
He had some expectations, but facing them in reality was beyond belief, almost to the point of laughter.
Support for Eastern unification, commander of a new army, inhuman autonomous territories…
“I sold my soul just to catch one! Damned bastards.”
The dead had no words.
Annoyed by their audacity, Wolfang forcefully struck Adaeus’s buttocks.
Thwack—
As the corpse shook, blood seeped from the beaten face.
Wolfang observed the scene with interest, then resumed examining the contract.
“Huh? But where’s Haganeth gone?”
In truth, the person he was most curious about.
The most important person to Wolfang.
Haganeth…
The image of her apologizing before the curtain fell for the last time.
Another conversation to be had with Haganeth was now added.
The level that could be resolved with one or two questions had already been surpassed.
“Why on earth…”
Setting aside his lingering emotions, Wolfang once again read the absurd contracts.
“Hmm?”
At that moment, the scattered fragments in his mind coalesced into a conclusion about revenge.
After taking the Holy Sword and the broken chains, he sighed heavily, looking towards the curtain.
“Poor and pathetic tribe.”
Seeking revenge while staining his hands with blood would inevitably leave a bitter aftertaste.
But forgiving them and disappearing was not an option, let alone surrender.
Wolfang’s conclusion after careful consideration was not that.
A more ruthless and cruel method of revenge.
Hiding the existence they feared the most in the world.
Wolfgang, thought to be executed, assassinated the warrior and escaped.
Even this fact alone would instill great terror in them.
It’s living in a state of uncertainty, not knowing when or where that terror might strike.
Watching as one gradually descends into madness, a lifetime lived in anxiety.
The contract Adewus made with him would become a mere scrap of paper with his death, leading the betrayers to naturally turn against each other.
Just staying alive and breathing could cause significant confusion among them.
“It’s not easy meeting someone you know from the afterlife for a long time, Adewus.”
The ultimate revenge that could destroy the betrayers without dirtying his own hands.
Thinking of hiding in an unknown place to witness their downfall, his lips curled up naturally.
Is this how dreams of retirement come true?
The once raised corners of his mouth turned into a bitter smile.
“Farewell, you maggots.”
As Wolfgang spat out curses, his body gradually became transparent, and after a while, he disappeared without a trace.
***
The queen sat frozen at her desk, staring at the unbelievable scene.
“I can’t fail like this…”
She thought this time would be different.
She had formed a perfect coalition unlike before and, for the first time, won the war against demons.
Terosa survived, becoming the sole nation of humanity, and the marriage with the warrior was progressing smoothly.
After ten attempts, the most ideal development was finally unfolding.
But now, unexpectedly and miserably, a huge crisis was unfolding from an unforeseen place.
In the midst of panic, Rosalia tried to steady herself, maintaining composure as she caught her breath.
“Casey! Are there any relics left?”
“…None. Neither the Holy Sword nor the Chains of the Gods…”
In a state of shock, Casey, looking dismayed, replied as the queen shouted.
“Hey! Snap out of it! Get the Captain of the Guard right now! Prepare everything for immediate tracking with the relic detector! Understand?”
“Yes, yes, I understand, Your Majesty.”
Responding to the queen’s urgency, Casey quickly rushed out to carry out the orders.
Watching her go, the queen approached the elf, grabbing her shoulders with both hands.
“Tendrial! Listen carefully. Your contract with Adewus is no different from the one I made as the queen. So, don’t entertain futile thoughts and do whatever it takes to find Wolfgang.”
“I understand. However, I…”
“I won’t provide any support for you.”
Tendrial’s face twisted slightly at the queen’s sharp refusal.
“Instead… bring useful companions among your allies.”
The companions mentioned by Rosalia were none other than the Forest Rangers who had been held captive like prey in Terosa’s underground prison.
Tendrial’s face, which had twisted at those words, brightened.
“Is that really true?”
“Yeah. Now is not the time to be picky.”
“Th…then… how many companions can I bring?”
“That’s for you to decide.”
“Ah, understood.”
“The prison door… can it be opened?”
Instead of answering, Tendrial quickly rushed towards the underground prison.
Left alone with the corpse of the warrior, Rosalia descended from the dais and slowly reached out towards the lifeless body.
There was no warmth, not even a trace.
After holding the warrior’s cold hands for a while, tears began to trickle down the queen’s eyes.
Soon, like dewdrops, the tears fell onto the warrior’s chilling remains with a soft sound.
“Hu…hu… Adewus…”
In the quiet hall where heavy air settled, only the queen’s sobbing echoed lonely.
After embracing the body for a few more minutes, wiping away the tears, the queen cast a spell of illusion.
In the illusion, the queen mourning the death of the warrior a moment ago was replayed.
“This should be well captured.”
She, too, had no intention of easily giving up on the last chance.
