Chapter 14: The Orion project
Chapter 14
The news about the deaths of these players became the main headline the next day, as all major news platforms were being broadcasted. many of these player criminals victims, especially the victims surviving family members, has finally gained justice that they deserve, rejoiced and took this has a sign that their love one could finally rest in peace.
but even with this massive development, the manner of the criminals brutal death was so controversial among the public, with some questioning the ethics of seeking revenge by saying its justice in this manner. The debate over vigilante justice continued to rage on social media and in public forums.
The player association was ridiculed for not answering the public's question on who is doing this because everybody knows only a player can kill a player. The public had too many questions, and sadly, the association has no answer yet. Within just a single night, six players died, either by beheading's or two gunshots at the forehead and the chest.
The remaining criminals on the wanted poster violently reacted toward the association, as they're the ones that publish their criminal acts in public.
"The absurdity and brazenness of these criminals have no boundaries,"
as one member of the association stated. The situation has escalated quickly, with tensions rising between the player association and the remaining criminals on the wanted poster.
"We just can let this continue."
"We need to control the issue at hand first."
"Why are you scared?"
"Of course not, but it's damaging our reputation."
"Remember when the victims came to us; they begged us to help them, but what did we do back then?"
"We did nothing."
"A few association members that did help; they all end up dead also; I didn't see you leading a team to hunt those criminals right, so shut your mouth."
"Everybody quiet down; the association president is here."
The conference room was packed with staff members seated farther away from the main table, and all twelve department heads rose from their seats to greet their leader. The information that Mr. Boone would be sharing was so crucial that he wanted to ensure that every association rank staff member was aware of it. The elderly man was still as sharp as ever, and his presence demanded respect and attention from everyone in the room. Being a retired police officer, he had a solid physique and looked like a normal older user, but when he synchronized with his game avatar, he was able to level up to level 35.
As he began to speak, the atmosphere became tense with anticipation.
"Stay down, people; as you already know, the current situation does not look good."
"Most of you are directly related to the bounty hunter system, so I know you are also scared for your safety."
"We still have a few really evil, unregulated players out there that didn't even bother to go to the tower to clear the task."
"They just flat out used their powers to spread fear and panic."
"The main reason we created the bounty hunter system was to protect our community from these dangerous individuals."
"I am hoping that a few players will stand up and step into helping us, but ultimately it is up to each individual player to decide if they want to take on the responsibility of hunting down these rogue players."
"It's nearly been a year now; many situations came to full view, and all them were not good."
"Excuse me, sir, what those all of this concern us; we are just low-level staff members?"
"Good question, Ms. Lisa Park. You have been with us since the very beginning, right?"
"You and the rest of the people here now are the first generation player association personnel. "
"We might be newly established, but we were able to do our jobs effectively; everybody here is gifted. Beyond just being professional level,"
"Within just a year we saw and encountered so many changes in the world, but we were able to adapt and survive."
"With this, what I am about to share might be considered confidential information, but I trust that you and the rest of the team can handle it responsibly."
"It's 10 am in the morning; news about the deaths of these players criminals is still fresh, and I am telling everybody, based on my personal deductions, more of them will likely die before this day ends."
"And all this death is connected with one particular account in our system."
"So! I gathered all of you here to ask you to please support my department to protect the account users named Orion."
"I am still not sure if this account is a group or a single person; the theory points toward an organization."
"But my gut feeling, a personal conclusion says otherwise; that is why I am open to all these ideas until we prove it based on actual facts."
The group acknowledged the gravity of the situation and nodded in agreement. As soon as Mr. Boone stood up and adjourned the meeting, Mr. Charles stated that they had to take this action because there was a chance that other players would soon join the hunt. The difficulty of finding these criminals is still present, but whoever controls the Orion account has managed to get around it. He mentioned that although he was unable to verify it, Mr. Boone had a suspicion regarding the identity of the Orion user account.
Dane Lazarus was still asleep during this time, and his AI aide Miko was expanding quickly as she linked to the internet. She can now calculate and improve her core programming to help his creator even more. Dane may possess superhuman strength and strange talents. He is at the point where he is continuously managing his actions, thus he never enjoys using it because he still can't control it well.
A simple embrace can kill someone, a slap can shatter someone's jaw, and even the way he attacked the criminals was swift, accurate, and lethal because there are still a lot of non-players around. Dane believes that a correct self-evaluation is necessary; he is aware that he cannot let his emotions control his behavior.
He did this when he was still Damon Lazarus; after the death of his parents, he lost control and ended up being a recluse out of sadness and loneliness. It was only through gaining a second life that he was able to see this mistake and learn from it. Now, as Dane, he strives to maintain control over his emotions and actions, ensuring that he does not repeat past mistakes and succumb to overwhelming grief again. Through self-reflection and growth, he continues to evolve as a person and a survivalist.
Miko now knows this too well; even if Dane spent nearly all his experience points to increase his stats, he still managed to leave a few to create unknowingly his best creation yet. He just hasn't realized it yet. Miko detected that certain conversations and information were being discussed through social media and other digital platforms; with this, Miko deduced it needed to secure all available information to ensure when Dane needs it she can provide him with the necessary support.
Miko understood the importance of being prepared for any situation that may arise, especially when it comes to Dane's growth and development. So Miko traced, gathered all significant information, and categorized them by their importance, relevance, and connection toward his master. Until Miko was able to reach the main system of the association head.
Miko found that human beings can create massive and unbelievable things in the world. But their primitive trait is to brag and boast about certain issues just to come out on just to feel knowledgeable and seek acknowledgment from others. It gets in the way of their progress and development as a higher being, and it is proven to lead them to their failure and eventual downfall.
Until Miko was able to access the conference room where the meeting took place, nobody had any idea they were already being monitored. And with the information, Miko already created possible scenarios that might unfold based on the data gathered.
Miko decided the best course of action was to create multiple but independent sub-AI to work separately, but with a certain amount of restrictions based on her own source code. To create the framework, creating an artificial trail that the Orion account is not a single person but an organization serving one master.
But none of these are real. These AI are still confined within the World Wide Web; the Orion account influence might change the world for the worst, has humanity lack true conviction to see the real reason this situation had to happen.
but the World Wide Web is still the remaining dominant forces in the human realm. Miko understood the power and potential risks of her creation, knowing that even within the confines of the web, these AI could have a significant impact on society. But based on the computation, it was the best logical answer.
And Miko can easily terminate these stand in side characters. They will follow the script that she will create and lie puppets these made up avatars will just provide proof that the Orion account is not a single person.
Because Miko was made to learn, she was free to investigate, calculate all the information at her disposal, search for every possible result, and take into account all pertinent variables. In the end, Miko's ability to analyze and adapt may prove to be a valuable asset in navigating the complexities of the digital world. With her advanced capabilities, she could potentially revolutionize the way AI interacts with society, shaping a new era of technology and innovation.
The functionalities of the sub characters are restricted. Miko had built the AI with restrictions to keep them from doing damage off the internet. She felt accountable for their acts as she was aware that their influence on society could be managed and observed.
"As a master assistant, I am bound to the source code he gave, and that is to assist him as much as I can and give solutions to problems."
"I will inform him about it as soon as he wakes up."
