The Tamers Ascension

Chapter 3: Chapter 3:The Rode To Civilisation

Ethan knelt in the center of the Forest Wraith's den, examining the map he had found buried among the remnants of the beast's hoard. The parchment was worn, its edges crumbling at the slightest touch, but the inked lines held their form well enough. A crude layout of the surrounding area was etched across it—forests, rivers, and, most importantly, what appeared to be a village marked with an odd crescent symbol.

"Finally," Ethan muttered to himself. "Civilization."

Shade, his shadowy companion, stood at his side, its luminous amber eyes fixed on him. Ethan glanced at the creature and smirked. "You've got that look like you already know where we're going."

Shade tilted its head but remained silent. Ethan chuckled. "Alright, let's move."

The forest seemed less hostile after the Forest Wraith's defeat, but Ethan couldn't tell if it was a genuine change or just his imagination. Regardless, the eerie luminescence of the surrounding trees provided enough light to navigate. He folded the map carefully and tucked it into his pocket before setting out along the most well-worn path he could find.

The journey was anything but smooth. The terrain was uneven, the undergrowth thick and stubborn, but Ethan trudged onward with Shade at his side. The only sounds were the crunch of leaves underfoot and the occasional call of some unseen creature.

"Sure would be nice to have a proper weapon," Ethan said to himself, eyeing the jagged branch he still carried. "Maybe the village has a blacksmith. Or, you know, anyone who doesn't want to kill me on sight."

Shade growled softly, its ears perking up. Ethan stopped in his tracks, scanning the trees.

"What is it?" he whispered.

A low rumble echoed through the forest, followed by the unmistakable sound of something large crashing through the underbrush.

"Oh, come on," Ethan muttered, tightening his grip on the branch.

From the shadows emerged a beast unlike any Ethan had seen before. It resembled a massive feline, its fur glistening like polished obsidian. Its eyes burned a bright green, and jagged horns jutted from its head.

[Enemy Detected: Obsidian Stalker. Threat Level: Moderate.]

"'Moderate,' huh? That's what you said about the bear," Ethan said, glancing at the system's notification. "That bear nearly turned me into paste."

The Obsidian Stalker let out a guttural snarl, its muscles tensing as it prepared to pounce.

"Shade," Ethan said, stepping back. "Distract it. I'll—"

The beast moved faster than Ethan anticipated, closing the distance in a single bound. Shade reacted instantly, leaping in front of Ethan and intercepting the creature mid-air. The two clashed with a thunderous impact, rolling across the forest floor in a tangle of claws and shadows.

Ethan scrambled back, his heart pounding. "Alright, think, think!"

Shade was holding its own, but the Obsidian Stalker was relentless. Every swipe of its claws sent dark sparks flying, and its sheer size made it difficult for Shade to gain the upper hand.

Ethan activated Shadow Step, teleporting a few feet closer to the battle. He aimed for the creature's exposed flank, swinging his branch with all his strength. The makeshift weapon struck true, but it splintered on impact, leaving little more than a dent in the beast's armor-like hide.

"Figures," Ethan muttered, tossing the broken branch aside.

The Obsidian Stalker roared, turning its attention to him. Ethan's blood ran cold as the creature lunged, its jaws snapping inches from his face. He dove to the side, narrowly avoiding the attack.

Shade took advantage of the distraction, unleashing its Wraith's Grasp ability. Spectral chains wrapped around the beast, holding it in place for a moment. Ethan didn't waste the opportunity. He scanned the forest floor, grabbing a jagged stone.

"Guess this'll have to do," he said, gripping the makeshift weapon tightly.

The Obsidian Stalker broke free of the chains, but Ethan was ready. He activated Shadow Step again, reappearing above the creature. With a shout, he drove the stone into the beast's neck, aiming for a vulnerable spot.

The creature howled in pain, thrashing violently. Ethan held on for dear life as the beast tried to shake him off. Shade lunged forward, sinking its claws into the creature's side

Together, they wore the beast down, exploiting every opening until it finally collapsed with a pained groan. Ethan rolled off its back, landing on the ground with a thud.

[Enemy Defeated: Obsidian Stalker.]

[Reward Unlocked: Spatial Magic Skill.]

Ethan stared at the notification, his exhaustion momentarily forgotten. "Spatial magic?" he said, sitting up. "What does that even mean?"

A new ability appeared in his interface: Dimensional Storage. Ethan focused on it, and a shimmering portal materialized in front of him—a swirling vortex of blue and white light.

"No way," Ethan said, reaching into the portal. He felt a strange weightlessness as his hand passed through the vortex. Tentatively, he placed the jagged stone inside and watched as it disappeared.

"That… is awesome," Ethan said, dismissing the portal. He turned to Shade, who was licking its wounds. "We're gonna be unstoppable at this rate."

Shade growled softly, its glowing eyes fixed on him.

"Alright, buddy," Ethan said, pushing himself to his feet. "Let's find that village before something else tries to eat us."

The forest began to thin as Ethan and Shade followed the map's directions. The glowing trees gave way to more ordinary foliage, and the air grew warmer, carrying with it the faint scent of smoke and baked bread.

"Almost there," Ethan said, his stomach growling. The thought of real food was enough to keep him moving, despite his exhaustion.

Finally, the village came into view. It was a modest settlement, its wooden buildings clustered around a central square. Smoke rose from chimneys, and the sounds of bustling activity filled the air.

Ethan paused at the edge of the forest, his nerves returning. "Okay, Shade," he said, glancing at his familiar. "We're going in, but we're keeping a low profile. No one needs to know about… any of this." He gestured vaguely to the system interface and the glowing eyes of his companion.

Shade growled softly, as if in agreement.

Taking a deep breath, Ethan stepped onto the dirt path leading into the village. The townsfolk barely glanced at him as he passed, too preoccupied with their daily routines. For the first time since arriving in this world, Ethan felt a small measure of relief.

He didn't know what awaited him here, but for now, he had found a place to rest.
