Chapter 12: The Alchemist's Offer
The next morning, Adam returned to Sparrow's Rest with a sense of cautious anticipation. The alchemist's enigmatic promise flitted through his mind, stirring curiosity and doubt. He was not naive enough to trust them completely, but if they had any knowledge or resources to offer, he could not afford to ignore them.
The inn's common room was quieter than before, its customers becoming less frequent in the early hours of the night. The alchemist sat in the same corner booth, his green cloak gathering around them like an extension of his shadow.
"You're on time," the alchemist said as Adam approached.
Adam slid into the seat opposite them, watching. "You said you had something for me."
The alchemist leaned forward, pulling a small, weathered parchment from under his cloak. They unfolded it enough for Adam to see the intricate hand-drawn diagrams and unknown symbols it contained.
"This," they began, in a low voice, "is a basic cultivation method. Nothing grand, but it is more than what ordinary people can achieve."
Adam held his breath. A cultivation method. The first step to power, to survival in a world where force reigned.
"What's the catch?" he asked aloud.
The alchemist laughed. "Clever. There's always a catch. I'm not giving this away for free. Consider it an investment, an investment that benefits both of you. If you become stronger, you it becomes a more useful resource. »
Adem frowned. He didn't like being called "wealth", but he couldn't deny the opportunity.
"What is the price?"
The alchemist's smile widens. "A favor. Nothing immediate. But when I ask you, I expect you to answer."
Adam considered the offer, weighing the risk against the potential reward. The alchemist was not one to be taken lightly, but the cultivation method was worth it.
"Very good," he said finally. "I'll take it."
The alchemist slid the scroll across the table, his expression indecipherable.
Effect: Allows the host to cultivate spiritual energy and begin advancing in cultivation fields. Adam's fingers tightened around the parchment as the system hummed softly in his mind. < System Notice: Cultivation Method Acquired. Host may now begin cultivation. >
The alchemist leaned back with a tone becoming relaxed. "You need a quiet place to practice. Somewhere you will not be disturbed. And don't expect immediate results. Culture requires patience and discipline. "
Adam nodded, putting the scroll back in his inventory. "Anything else? "
The alchemist's eyes shone. "A word of advice: trust your instincts, but don't be too sure. This world will not tolerate fools and weaklings."
With that, they stood up and disappeared into the shadows of the inn, leaving Adam alone with the weight of his decision.
He pulled himself together slowly, his mind buzzing with possibilities. The path of cultivation had finally opened before him, but the journey would not be easy.
Now, he had only one goal: to find a safe place to begin his training. The rest could wait.
