Chapter 4: Chapter 4: The Shadow’s Play
The cool night air enveloped Adam as he waited in the alley, his pulse steady. The building was silent except for the occasional murmur of voices inside. His plan was simple: wait until the deal was done and capture the seller. Luo Chen may have been too powerful to challenge, but the other man was probably a bandit or a merchant with limited strength.
Adam's system came to life in his vision.
< System Tip: Targets with lower culture or defense are often easier to exploit. >
Adam smiled. The system, cold and clinical, knew exactly how to play this game and learned quickly.
Minutes passed before the door opened again. Luo Chen emerged first, his clothes flapping in the moonlight. In his hands he held a small wooden box, wrapped in red silk. The basin around him flashed again, signaling the success of his opportunity.
Adam Serra fists. It was too late to stop Luo Chen, but his attention shifted as the second figure emerged from the building.
The vendor was a thin old man, with sharp, sunken eyes and a stooped posture. His clothes were plain and worn from travel, and he carried a bag over his shoulder.

Adam let out a slow sigh. The old man was no threat - he could probably be subdued if necessary, but confrontation was not the plan. He had to act intelligently.
The old man walked down the hallway, muttering under his breath. Adam waited until he was a few steps away before stepping out of the shadows.
"Long night for a deal, huh?" Adam said in a low but firm voice.
The man shuffled, instinctively reaching for his bag. His eyes narrowed as he leaned over Adam, pushing him away almost immediately.
"Come on, my son, I have no time to waste with beggars."
Adam tilted his head, forcing a smile. Beggars are generally unaware of the treasures of the Black Veil Ruins.
The man's expression darkened and his grip on the bag tightened. "Watch what you say, child. Such words can kill."
Adamu took a step forward, his hands raised in surrender. "Relax. I'm not here to fight. I just want to talk, maybe make a deal myself."
The old man hesitated, his eyes shining with doubt. "You? Make a deal? What could a rat like you offer me
Adam's mind raced. He had nothing of value, no money, no power, just the system. But the system had shown him a way, and he had no intention of losing it.
"Information," Adam finally said. "I know people in Jadeleaf who would pay three times what Luo Chen offered you. "
Human lips folded into a grin. "You expect me to believe you?"
Adam's smile widened. "You don't have to believe me. But if you leave now, you'll never know. Luo Chen's payment barely covered your travel expenses, right?"
The old man stood up and Adam knew he had touched a nerve. He continued in a loud voice. "Let me help you. Give me the next treasure you find and I'll make sure it's sold for what it's worth."
The man stiffened, but the tension in his attitude relaxed a little. "You've got courage for a street rat." I'll give it to you."
He added the bag with an unreadable expression. "I don't have time for this right now, but I'll remind you. If you lie, I'll make sure you regret it."
With that, the man turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving Adam alone in the alley.
< System warning: Influence gained. Target may become a future ally or resource. >
Adam exhaled slowly, masking his relief. It wasn't the result he had expected, but it was a step forward - a place in a world that always seemed out of reach.
For now, that's enough.
I will incorporate spiritual building and foundation opportunities after chapter 20, keeping them essential for Adam's long-term growth. Let me know if there is anything else you would like to expand on!
