Chapter 6: Chapter 6: A Glimpse of Power
Chapter 6: A Glimpse of Power
The chill of the night crept into Adam's tattered clothes as he walked through the dark alleys of Jadeleaf City. His previous failure weighed on him, but he pushed it aside. Survival required concentration and he couldn't handle distractions, not when the system had opened a door he didn't know existed.
As he slipped into the quieter outskirts of the market circle, the system crashed again.
< System Alert: Scanning for nearby individuals. .. >
Dozens of pale figures materialized in Adam's vision, most of them dull and gray. But one of them, far ahead, near the doors leading to the noble quarters, glowed faintly with a golden hue.
< Opportunity discovered: 3 stars. >
Adam's pulse quickened. A 3-star rating was much better than anything he had encountered from Luo Chen. His eyes narrowed as he focused on the figure, a young man in simple but clean clothes.
Name: Ji Rong Cultivation Area: Body Temperature (Second Stage) Raw Power: 5 Spirit Power: 2 Chance Rating: 3 Stars Adam's mind was killed. The target was not particularly strong, and a 3-star opportunity was big enough to be worth the risk. But without a transfer card, he would have to follow Ji Rong closely and hope for a chance to act. The young man walked intently, heading toward the edge of the city, where abandoned workshops and warehouses dotted the landscape. Adam followed him in the distance, his footsteps silent against the cobblestones. After a few minutes, Ji Rong stopped in front of a dilapidated warehouse. He turned around, nervously before slipping inside, the wooden door creaking behind him. Adam hesitated. It could be dangerous, there was no telling what awaited him inside. But the system had not yet diverted him.
< System tip: Opportunities often involve hidden elements, rare events, or key encounters. Proceed with caution. >
Taking a deep breath, Adamu approached and pressed his ear to the door. Muffled voices came from inside, their tones harsh but indistinct. Carefully, he opened the door just enough to peer inside.
Ji Rong stood beside a table piled with dusty scrolls and small wooden boxes. In front of him stood a large, heavy-looking man with his arms crossed over his chest.
"Is this authentic?" Ji Rong asked in a low but demanding voice.
The taller man groaned, opening one of the drawers to reveal a faintly glowing jade pendant. Adam's eyes widened as the pendant shimmered with a soft light, radiating an energy that made his skin tingle even from a distance.
< System Alert: Manifestation of Imminent Opportunity. >
Adam caught his breath. Whatever the nature of this pendant, it had to be an opportunity - a rare artifact worth far more than Ji Rong could fathom. But how could he take it?
He quickly scanned the room, noticing the open window on the other side of the warehouse. If he did it right, he could grab the pendant and run away before anyone noticed.
As Ji Rong bent down to inspect the pendant, Adam made his move. He darted through the door, scrutinizing the shadow as he circled the room. The low hum of the pendant's energy grew louder, drawing the senses.
As the taller man turned to remove something from another chest, Adam rushed forward, his hand closing around the jade surface. The cold of the hanger.
"Hey!" Ji Rong shouted in his high-pitched voice of alarm.
Adem did not hesitate. He rushed towards the open window, jumping through it as a sudden crash was heard behind him.
"Thieves!" The brutal man shouted, his footsteps echoing behind Adam.
But Adam was already gone, blending into the shadows of the alleys with the pendant clutched in his hand. The faint glow faded as he reached into his inventory, the voice of the system echoing through his soul.
< Chance Guaranteed: 3-Star Artifact (Jade Pendant). Inventory updated. >
< Guest Inventory:
Jade Pendant (unknown ownership)
Adam paused in a quiet corner of the city, his chest heaving as he caught his breath. He picked up the pendant, its smooth surface cool against his skin.
For the first time in years, he felt the thrill of possibility - the first step towards something greater than survival. The system had given him more than power; it had given him hope.
And he wouldn't let it go.
