chapter 7
7 – Success or Failure of the Surgery?
Daisy felt sensation returning to her numb right leg.
Giant mantis.
In simple terms, it was a giant magpie lurking behind Daisy, and it was the back of Daisy’s calf that was cut.
At that moment, Daisy lost sensation and thought it would never return…
‘How…?’
A wound deeply cut in this era is akin to an incurable disease.
In an era where pouring divine power is a common treatment, the concept of “connecting wounds with thread” did not exist.
In that sense, Daisy felt like she had seen the god of medicine.
‘It’s not just sensation. If you give me strength, I can move my leg!’
With her Achilles tendon severed, even with strength, Daisy’s leg had no power.
Although Kim Chul-soo wrinkled his face and shouted, “Don’t move!”, Daisy didn’t move her leg, but with her sensitive senses, she could tell.
That her leg had recovered.
A miracle had occurred.
‘Ah…’
Daisy shuddered slightly.
She could continue her heroic deeds.
She could go defeat the demon king!
Daisy’s fate of losing her right leg and being ruined had changed.
At the moment she lost her right leg, she had thought of giving up being a hero…
Daisy naturally saw the being that had saved her fate. With trembling hands, fearing she might sew it wrong, she saw the man who was burning his soul to heal Daisy with his fragile body.
It was unfamiliar to Daisy.
Could it be a saint?
If there was a saint, was it him?
Fellow companions like Mateo, Lala, Numidia, and Carrot, who treasured Daisy dearly, were cautious when they first met Daisy.
It was through traversing numerous battlefields that they gradually opened the doors to each other’s hearts and came to cherish one another.
If it hadn’t been for that, they would have clashed with each other.
Others might have been the same.
Daisy probably would have been too.
But only one person, Kim Cheol-su, was different.
When Daisy asked Kim Cheol-su, “Why are you… going to such lengths to save me?” he replied, “Damn it…! Do I need a reason to save a patient!? And you asked to fix your legs!! I will make sure you walk perfectly, so don’t say such things!”
He was solely interested in saving Daisy without any ulterior motives.
His words were pure shock to Daisy.
How could she trust someone she had just met without any doubt?
Was she wrong to do so?
His words struck deep in Daisy’s heart.
Perhaps, the hero himself had been looking at the world too darkly.
After the surgery, as he fainted from focusing too much, the pale and exhausted Kim Cheol-su shone brighter than anyone else in Daisy’s eyes.
* * * *
Drifting through a hazy realm of consciousness.
Hmm… Seems like I fainted during surgery.
Do I have narcolepsy? No, this is the first time, so it can’t be that…
The surgery went well, right? I did my best.
I was so focused that I even dreamt of performing surgery in my dreams.
“Gasp!”
Horrible!
I wanted to dream sweet dreams!
For example, a dream where I lie down and scroll through my phone.
This medieval stuff is fun, right!
I sat up suddenly! It was my room in Yeongjuseong.
“Phew, I woke up.”
I splashed my face with water.
It felt like I had a nightmare of being in the military.
Next time, I hope to dream of scrolling through my phone. Dreaming of watching YouTube shorts would be just right…
Anyway, I grasped the situation.
I lost consciousness right after the surgery, so I have no memory of it.
Fortunately, Becky was wandering around my room, so I could figure out what happened. She said Emma and the knights moved me here.
“Emma is gracious.”
I must repay her kindness someday.
Feeling immense gratitude towards Emma, I searched for patient Daisy.
There are things I need to do for the patient after the surgery, but since no one here knows, I have to do everything myself from start to finish.
And above all, I had a strong desire to confirm that the surgery went well.
The first suturing surgery.
Just the thought of it makes my heart race.
I never imagined doing this back in Korea, but now that I actually did it.
“Sigh, I thought I was going to die from tension.”
If asked to do it again, I don’t think I can.
A quadruple-layered suture was truly a major battle.
If you sew it wrong, you have to open the skin and sew it again, so I really concentrated when sewing.
“I can still feel it vividly.”
The sensation of inserting a needle and passing the thread through the living flesh!
A thrilling sensation still lingers in my hands.
“Even though muscle sutures are difficult… skin sutures should be doable.”
Now, simple sutures should be possible.
It feels like my level as a medical professional has gone up.
* * * *
Finding the patient, Ms. Daisy, wasn’t difficult.
When I went to where people were gathered, Daisy was looking for me with the support of her colleagues, Mateo and Carrot.
I came face to face with Daisy.
“Oh no, I’m going crazy.”
I almost lost my mind for a moment.
Daisy was walking despite her right calf being swollen and turning red!
The first two weeks after surgery are the recovery period.
Don’t walk! You might tear the sutured area if you do!!
“Patient, you mustn’t move!!”
“…I want to thank you for your grace as a hero.”
“I understand your gratitude, but you mustn’t move!? Is there a bed nearby? Lay Daisy down!! If anyone has a splint, bring it over! And bandages too!”
Even a hero wouldn’t be able to walk in just one day.
Daisy’s colleagues left her at the empty house with a puzzled look.
One of Count Yeongji’s carpenters brought a splint, and I placed it on Daisy’s right calf, wrapping it with bandages.
For leg suture patients, they need a half cast for the first two weeks, and then a full cast for the next two weeks.
Of course, since Count Roland didn’t have casts, we used a splint instead.
Fortunately, Daisy’s right calf was healing well and there was no sign of infection.
“Phew, it’s been a tough ten years! Daisy, I’ll say it again, don’t walk. The swelling in your right calf is going down, a sign of recovery. If you want to use your right leg well, at least lie still in bed for four weeks, understood?”
“Four weeks… really?”
“Yes! Actually, if you add up the recovery time, it’s over eight weeks, but let’s see how things go for now!”
The heroes’ expressions were strange.
Is there any rush to leave the hospital? Or are you going to carry Daisy’s bed around like Joseon nobles?
This is a non-negotiable issue.
Daisy seemed to quietly ponder my words, then chuckled softly and nodded her head slightly.
“I’ll do that.”
“Daisy!?”
“The Demon King’s army has been tied up on the frontlines for three years. I might have some time for a month, right? Isn’t that so, Lala?”
“Uh-huh…”
“Or maybe you guys go ahead first. I’ll follow after I recover.”
“Daisy! We can’t do that! I’ll stay here while you recover!”
“I… I will too.”
“Haha… Thank you.”
The heroes embraced each other, sharing a deep bond of friendship.
“Well, if you understood, that’s enough.”
They confirmed the success of the surgery.
Feeling proud as the patient cooperated well.
“I… I succeeded in the suturing surgery.”
The first surgery was a success.
The satisfaction welling up in their chests was no joke.
As a novice, their hands were trembling.
But in the end, they succeeded, and a smile came naturally.
The patient was happy, they were happy – it was a win-win!
“Thank you.”
After sharing their friendship, the heroes all bowed to me.
Their very polite attitude made me feel a bit uncomfortable.
“I heard your name is Kim Cheol-soo. Kim Cheol-soo, without you, Daisy would have never been able to walk again. Thank you for fixing Daisy’s leg.”
“Thank you.”
“Thank you.”
When the wizard Mateo knelt down, his fellow heroes followed suit.
Wow, it’s gratifying, but I feel like I’ve become some high-ranking official.
“Oh, it’s fine! It’s just my duty as a medical professional. Please, everyone, stand up!”
“No. We received grace, and we will be sincerely grateful.”
“Fine… do as you wish. Then.”
Their strong will and burdensome satisfaction seemed to warrant my gratitude.
Mateo, slowly getting up, mentioned a reward.
“I will definitely inform the capital of this news. The great healer lives with Count Roland.”
“Huh?”
I doubted my ears.
So, do I announce to the capital that the suturing surgery was successful?
I naturally imagined an overwhelming number of emergency patients flocking to Count Roland’s estate.
I’m just one person, but do patients from all over the country flock here, waiting for my treatment? This is hell!
I might die from exhaustion just treating them.
Even though there aren’t any fleeing medical professionals in front of patients, there are limits!
“Please don’t!”
“Hmm? Becoming famous in the capital is a very honorable thing as a healer…”
“It’s not necessary!”
“Sigh… truly unbelievable.”
Mateo looked at me with admiration, as if seeing a saint who had performed a miracle.
“How humble you are. I’ve learned one thing from you, Cheol-soo! I won’t inform the capital as you wish, Cheol-soo.”
“Yes… yes… just stay still.”
I barely managed to calm Mr. Matteo down.
I can’t say it to him, but I’ve admired the honey-collecting profession for a long time.
Quietly and without any recognition, producing fertilizer is my life goal!
Don’t interfere with my life goal!
By the way, after some time had passed.
As I was teaching the priests who were nursing, Miss Daisy came in.
Miss Catherine was holding a pot emitting a strong herbal scent.
“Kim Chul-soo, eat this! It’s a recovery dish made with Hottgae and Doraji, which are good for stamina!”
No wonder I couldn’t see Miss Catherine, she had brought the nourishing dish while I was unconscious.
“Thank you, Miss.”
My heart felt touched.
Does it feel like more people are thinking about me?
I drank it in one shot like a man! …But I couldn’t hit it, so I blew on it and drank it.
“Yuck.”
It was tasteless, as if it hadn’t been cooked properly.
